Shahid essayed the role of Maharawal Ratan Singh in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's directorial. When asked why he decided to take the role, he replied, "There are some films that are very close to your heart and then there are some films which you have to experience with other people. I did this character of Ratan Singh for people because I wanted people to know more about him, about his valour and his sacrifices."

While critics and viewers are all praises for the historic drama which is being lauded in the overseas market too, actress Swara Bhasker slammed director Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the 'glorification' of Sati and Jauhar in his recently-released epic period drama. The actress, in an open letter, said that the film reduces women to "talking about vaginas." Shahid was asked his opinion on the same when he said, "I haven't read it yet. We have been busy with other things, but I think this isn't the right time. 'Padmaavat' is representing the film industry and it's freedom of expression."

"It has been a tough battle for us to be able to bring forth the film to the audience. It feels great to receive support from the entire industry but it feels odd that someone said something on a personal level. That's OK though as everyone has the right to say what they want but I haven't read it yet."

Recently director Rohit Shetty too reacted to Swara's open letter. Rohit, on the sidelines of the Mirchi Music Awards 2018, hit out at the Anaarkali of Aarah star and said, "I'd like to request everyone that after so much troubles and struggles the film Padmaavat has released, please let it run in peace."

"It is our film, so if I say something or someone else says something, we would be trying to create more trouble for our film. Film has released and let the audience watch it. The film is doing phenomenal business after all the hassle and trouble the entire production has faced especially Sanjay Leela (Bhansali), Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and TV 18, let their movie run in peace," the director added.

"Now if we try and say something and create problem then what would be the point. Let the film breathe now, for God's sake," he said further.
