Thank you Praveen. Am not able to understand one thing, how come KDB keeps in the top positions, I mean there is no story base, it is like an assembly of characters and scenes all very superficial with excess grandeur and fairy tale type. They just keep beating about the bush with Preeta, Karan, Rishab, Sherlyn, Prithvi and the associated characters. There is no depth in story first of all for Preeta to be so overactive about everything. And Karan (Dheeraj) seems just to be there to give a romantic couple look to Preeta, there is no romantic spark between them but over friendliness. Preeta looks older and taller than Karan to be impressive. And the Arora ladies reaction and set up all seem to go out of place now and their two newly associated daughters do not fit into their household at all. I mean i was watching in the beginning to see if it is in anyway related to KKB but no, except for borrowing the Arora family and the KKB leads, especially Abhi for promo, nothing else. KKB had won the hearts of the audience with the casts' acting and the story base in the beginning. There was no marketing for it except being an Ekta kapoor show. I for one started watching after I accidentally happened to watch the first Abhigaya scene, the mud splattering scene, was straight away impressed by their acting and got hooked and now am a die hard fan of Tisha. But KDB just has been thrust into the audience and looked impressive in the beginning with the usual Ekta kapoor grandeurness but now it started beating about the bush, I just read the updates now and then, so wondering how come it keeps the top slot. I mean it has good actors but they do not have enough story to be impressive.

First thing first, TRP's are currently calculated based on manual data inputs coming from some section of Indian viewers belonging to those 30,000 sample BARC households whose setboxes got linked to a barometer but these are again part of only select DTH operators comprising of only few urban & rural regions that are geographically part of only few states of India.

Second thing, even with restricted samples, position of a show in rating charts also depends on how other hindi TV shows on a particular channel at a given time slot have been watched in that particular week.

oops so many limitations.. so one can't concretely derive what hindi TV serial watching audiences are loving or are getting bored with. Channels and market researchers do have other mechanisms to conduct offline surveys to find out periodically what serials or characters are most loved in India and for what reasons, way beyond TRP's and social media feed backs.

Lets look in detail at 9.30pm slot. Most hindi serial watchers try to shuffle between SP, Colors & Zee in this time slot and rarely opt for Sony.

  • YRKKH on SP has been long running an 8 yr old show. There may be people like me who rarely watch this particular show and may not be interested also in kitchen politics or over dosage of few rich families repeated drama. New couple Naira-Karthik grabbed some attention this year after this show had a revamp and so it again got popular with younger generation also got ratings. However for close to 3.5 months they dragged another wedding in two families with no great drama element but focusing only on prolonged pre-wedding and actual marriage rituals.
  • Swabhimaan on Colors started well with good concept of a strong single mother and her two educated daughters, also fared well on ratings chart. But soon makers digressed into typical saas-bahu or some OTT drama post wedding of girls. Then it was abruptly pulled off few months back and instead of launching a new show Colors extended its 9pm show Shani into the same slot for a long period. Their new show Laado 2 was launched at 9.30pm just a month back and its trying to build pace and twists now..
  • KRPKYB on Sony lost its sheen with young audience after marriage of main leads when it again went on a saas-bahu mode and then it took a separation leap with a 7yr old child. Its pace was too slow before KBC occupied its time slot.

So when KDB started at same 9.30 pm time slot on Zeetv during Jul 2017 most hindi TV viewers were looking for alternate options and it was a good attraction for them to start a new fiction show promoted as a spinoff of a successful show KKB by Ekta with Abhi and Pragya's family getting highlighted in promos and precaps, and advantage was it starts immediately after KKB ends on Zee. 😊

In addition the above mentioned factors of having NO proper competition worked well from Jul-Nov for KDB on Zee and some stable audience thus got built. Also most situations, scenes and plots are direct lifts from KKB old episodes that have worked well with audiences earlier with just new actors enacting them in KDB. Now such viewers who didn't follow KKB closely in first two years may not be aware of this backdrop and may be enjoying such scenes as fresh. 😳 Those who are old KKB viewers may be still emotionally connected to Arora house, Arora family and Kumkumbhagya function hall and may be still wanting to see how Sarla maa handles lives of her new two daughters.

We just need to see how KDB would sustain next year or when Arora house and Pragya's maa and dadi get lesser focus. Also when SP and Colors shows hike up their drama element and strengthen their content, then also impact on KDB can be noticed.

Different people like different shows.😊 So I'm not surprised KDB is doing better. I haven't watched the show in a while now. But when it started, it was good. I think it has very contemporary and new themes - tall girl like Shrisht with shorter guy, Sherlin-Prithvi suspense, 2 guys one girl love triangle, etc. I like the fact Preeta and Karan have a very good relationship where they talk and discuss things. They're kind of breaking old assumptions that man has to be taller or girl has to speak in a demure or shy way. That conversation angle is very realistic. In a way, i feel Abhi and Pragya are too old fashioned. BB used to say they're like 70's couple. They only have moments of physical closeness, but no emotional intimacy or have a relationship like good friends.
