Very well said. Today, the definition of TRP audience has changed. They are not only TRP aunties (for lack of a better term) but teenagers and men too. I'll give you an example, me. I'm a teenager but I always watch TV serials on the television. I rarely watch it online, if I missed it somehow due to college or meetings. Second example, my Dad. He loves IMM and is always in front of the TV by 7.30 pm. On the contrary, my mom doesn't watch any show so religiously as me and my Dad.
So the definition has definitely changed. And so has to the content. People who liked to watch saas bahu rona dhona balidaan are still there but now, they are slightly getting bored of the same things. They too want a little change, mind you I said a little change. For example, they will accept a woman divorcing her abusive husband but they won't accept a woman professing her love to her devar, after her marriage with his older brother.
If the content is interesting, why won't people watch it? Yes it'll fetch less TRPs but that's the way to move on. Slowly and steadily. Other wise our TV will remain regressive forever.
They should deliver what they had promised. Grey is grey. It is not black. It is not white.

I remember recently reading Ravi Dubey's interview where he said, how many from TV industry were pleasantly surprised when the first year episodes of Jamai Raja daily show that's centered around male lead role played by him was consistently topping rural TRP charts though it had NO focus on conventional super woman or cry baby female leads struggles as bahu. Even CID kind of shows are watched well even today by rural audiences. 😃

Most Star Plus prime time fiction dailies that got launched in the last couple of years and even some on Sony channel failed to strike a chord with audiences for sustained periods for different reasons and were pulled down, not because Indian audience is blindly demanding to daily sit and watch traditional kitchen politics or overly vampish or saas-bahu dramas.

Audience demographic, acceptability and tastes got mostly fixated by producers and channels rather than audience demanding them. 😊 Have been noticing it, whenever writers, makers, directors, creatives etc. fail to connect their characters or concepts with audiences or have no clarity whom they are targetting their show at, they blame it vehemently on regressive tastes of audiences rather than introspecting where they went wrong in scripting, execution or in promotions.

Sry, I often find it amusing in current age when people keep throwing around left right center this word 'TRP aunties' in general and attribute it for prime time late evening shows..quite understandable if aunties or grannies rather house wives are attributed for giving viewership to such TV shows that are aired by channels during afternoon or early evening slots when others in the family may not yet reach home or may be occupied in other daily activities.😳But for late evening TV shows when almost entire family assembles at home around dinner time how many average Indian households (be it urban or rural) continue to leave remote control completely with housewives, just asking? 😕

Not sure how many are aware about this data but weekend 8pm supernatural 'Naagin season 1' on colors got more success and grabbed highest TRP's due to kids and teenagers demanding to watch it, more than the aunties. 😊

An 8pm prime time daily show like 'Shakti' on Colors which started talking about transgender issues with unconventional love & marriage concepts shocking traditional audiences not just opened well but also sustained within first 6-8 months of its telecast in popularity, critical acclaim, characterization, drama and TRP's. This shows initial success wasn't only due to so called aunties.

Recently another daily show with youthful musical love story concept like 'Tu Ashiqui' aired on Colors has been growing steadily again in drama, romance, popularity and TRP's. Even this show isn't grabbing eyeballs due to some aunties.

Similarly another crime thriller daily show 'Ishq Mein Marjawan' on Colors had its ups and downs since launch but recently has been steadily growing on to audiences mind due to some intriguing factors week on week.

Most TV audiences irrespective of gender and age groups need some intriguing and entertaining factors to hook them up or few characters that they can emotionally relate to, otherwise some body they can fantasize in a fiction show, its simple. 😛 Even unconventional stories click well if makers package and promote a show well on a weekly basis and air at a right time slot.

Now importantly in 2017 at an average hindi non-fiction and reality shows across all major channels grabbed more viewership, acclaims and TRP's from Indian audiences, thus clearly showing its a wider audience that's watching TV in current age, not just some aunties.

I absolutely agree with you regarding the reference to TRP aunties.😆 I totally dislike the term when it is thrown about with abandon and derision...partly because I myself watch some hardcore TRP stuff sometimes😆

More than often, the mainstream audience watches shows which if not engaging at least delivers what it promises. If not the plot, the characters...or the way the concept is packaged and presented as a whole.

But i still believe that despite the audience accepting some offbeat stuff..things haven't changed in their entirety. The modes of storytelling, the themes and characterisation require a lot of overhaul. But I suspect that it will take a good twenty years to achieve that. Till then...the makers should try serving new wine in old bottles to get audience acceptance.

The worst part is that there is so much potential to the characters...but they HAD to go the way of the run of the mill story. Ranveer and Anchal in particular have been butchered beyond belief

What bugs me more is the utter incongruity of certain things. A glamorous, glossy setting like this does not sync with the kundali thing that they showed recently. The Mauritius episodes hinted at a different kind of tone and tenor and the kundali ones at something else. First of all, the writers seem to be totally confused about their audience demographic. They need to make up their minds about whether they want to make a slick urban thriller or a mainstream TRP show watched in huge numbers.

Totally agree with you. But the writers are silent when we point out that we think that Ranvir's character has been butchered. And also the kundali thing confused me too. I mean this show was supposed to be different in that case. And also, yeah the writers should obviously come out of their dilemma. They can't have the cake and eat it too.

One interesting observation.. not sure how many online have noticed this..😛

Writer Sameer seems to have hosted an astrology website earlier.. seems kundali, tarot, karmic healing etc. are his passion apart from writing scripts. Now one can understand why so much emphasis on kundali dosh in Haasil and handling an entire unconvincing marriage track surrounding that.

I think satrupa from rishton ka chakravyuh is the perfect example of a grey character. She's good at heart and doesn't mean ill for anyone, but she's calculative and has aspirations, and for that she is willing to get her hands dirty a little and play mind games to achieve what she wants, especially when she wants the best for herself and her family, so she can at times choose to resort to crooked ways to get what she wants. Again, she has the well being of the people she loves at heart when she does play dirty, and doesn't cower away from voicing her own desires, because thinking of one's own progress in life doesn't make someone automatically selfish.

When the writers themselves are confused about the difference between grey and negetive, how can they convince viewers with their writing. First they should themselves be cleared about it..
