A/N : Heya people! Writing fiction after ages... And it's a feeling so happy 😆
This one's real simple and smooth. No OTT dramas, no high voltage bends. I hope y'all will like it. <3

THANKYOU RAMYA DI FOR BEING BY MY SIDE CONSTANTLY AS I PENNED THIS DOWN. THIS ONE'S FOR YOU!❤️

Part I

I saw the clock ticking. Time was fleeing past, until yesterday. Ever since I had chanced upon the news of his arrival, I was exasperated. Sleep ridden and tired, my heart thumped loudly.

Just a few seconds more and he'd be here. How on Earth was I to react? To appear if all's okay? That was probably the only choice plausible as I couldn't risk conveying my thoughts.
I glanced upon a pair of heels kept near my cupboard.

"Darn this wretched pair!", I cursed as I dragged my feet with much difficulty. My ankles were swollen and toes were bruised. No, not that I had been at War. These were, just the perks of opting to wear stilletos at a Wedding. It was the first time in 15 years that I had chosen to wear anything but flats. And I was sure I wasn't doing it ever again.
The quarter acre of the food court had spread itself in all possible corners. To satisfy my hunger was one thing and to do it with the heels on, was another.

But there was more to the bad luck. In a sudden turn of events, my balance just disappeared into thin air as I had a nasty fall.

"Ouch!", I fell with a thud. My foot just twisted to the left as I hit the grassy ground.
"Why do girls wear heels when they can't handle it?", a boy offered his hand. I frowned. What attitude!

"Now let me see, the bone isn't broken. Just a sprain", he announced.

"Are you a doc?"
"No, that's common sense. You're up, on your feet. So nothing major"

That was the first time I'd seen him. The meeting wasn't worthy of remembrance but now that I recollect our memories, it comes across as a faded, tattered page of my journey.

It was around midnight when the doli departed for the groom's house. Half asleep and slightly injured, I quickly got into the car. The shehnai was adding to the grief of the atmosphere and contributed it's share to the melancholic mood. I ran my eyes across everyone's tear stricken face. And through the window blind, I could see him silently weeping as the procession bade a good-bye to the girl's side.

A drop gently brushed through my cheeks and made it's way to my slender neck. I was shaken out of the flashes that I'd left behind.
"Shefali, open the door!", mother called upon.

They were here, my cousins aunt and uncle. And him.

"Aaahhh!", My sister clasped me in a tight hug as I opened the door.
"So good to see you!"
"Same here!", I responded somewhat cheerfully. Eyes failed to meet as I turned my gaze towards the floor and swiftly disappeared into the kitchen on the pretext of bringing refreshments. Even then, I'd seen his reflection on the granite flooring. With a towering height and an outlandish personality, he still very much was capable of sinking my heart.

On the other hand, he was seated on the Sofa with others, without a care in the world. But perhaps, that was a part of him - not to fret over things like me. A storm could be uprooting him from within but not a slight sign of it will be visible to the naked eye. I myself had taken so many years to understand his composition.

"My lovely children! There's no time to lose. Quickly freshen up and we're off to dinner at The Ritz!", announced Dad. I emerged with Mother, smiling. It was my favourite place, he knew it. Perhaps this was the chance that he wanted. Maybe he wanted to say something to me after all that that had transpired between us.

"But before that, some Christmas Cake!", I served out slices to everyone.

"What the hell is this!", my Uncle bellowed at us. It wasn't our fault but the baker's. He couldn't obviously tolerate the fact that the grand cake of his daughter's first birthday was sour and smelt awful.
"Relax. I'll get it sorted", Aunt assured him.
She pulled me aside and instructed :
"Now go back to the baker's and get the replacement. And hurry back, there's only an hour and a half to the cake cutting. I don't want anybody waiting"

"But it'll be too late if I catch a cab or auto. And I can't drive yet", I pointed out the problem.
"Okay, Arjun will take you. Here, the keys. Be careful"

He emerged from the gateway. I threw the keys at him as we hurriedly left for the bakery.

"The baker's these days! How unprofessional!", He grumbled and honked in the traffic.
"And you! You shouldn't have ordered in such a low profile bakery"

"I didn't know! The hotel's manager told me that the food there is good. So I went for it. You belong to this city, not me!", I hit back.
"Alright, we're not going to that silly old bakery anyways. I'm driving straight to Taj Vivanta and we'll get the cake from there"

"What? No! Listen, I've been told to get the replacement from Indiana. Just stick to that"
"So that we get another cake that's rotten?"
"Okay stop. We will go to Indiana, get the replacement. And go to Taj as well for a new one"
"Done!", he said as we sped off.

It was 45 minutes by the time we reached Indiana Bakery.
"I'll wait here, you go and get the cake"

I ran upstairs to the shop and placed the bill on the counter.
"Pineapple 5 and a half kgs replacement"
"Wait a minute Ma'am", the guy answered. After ten long minutes, the cake finally appeared and another five gone as he packed it. I gave them an earful of scoldings and a quick guide to ensure quality service before leaving.

...

"Sorry Sir, we've run out of Pineapple cakes", the man told us. Never had I imagined that 5 star hotels 'ran' out of something!

"Chocolate then?", We chorused together.
"But that's available for 4 kgs"
"I'd placed an order half an hour ago!", Arjun asserted.
"But specialised cakes need 12 hours of order prior to delivery", the man told us.
"Give us the chocolate one", I told him. "Make it quick!"

...

The Hall echoed to the Happy Birthday tune as our wishes reverberated. The two cakes were neatly placed on the Dias as the birthday girl's parents helped her cut them. The effort was satisfying.

"The idea of bringing two was marvellous! Never expected such a huge demand of cakes... We would've fallen short of them if there was only one", Aunt told us later. He proudly grinned and it appeared as if he was gladly accepting the credit.
"Everyone loved them, specially the Pineapple one"
It was my turn to smile.

...

I was looking for my shoes in the rack.

Suddenly, a certain fragrance of lavender filled the room. Yes, it was his. He always wore the same one, without fail.
"Maa, where are my flats?", I noisily asked her.
"Must be there. Anyways, why don't you wear heels? I think you haven't touched the pair ever since you'd forced me to buy them"
I just sighed, picked up my sister's sandals and kneeled to wear them. I ain't sure but I saw his face getting warm through the corner of my eye, as he loitered aimlessly near the rack. Was he smiling?

...

Until the next one,
Ciao!
