Trying to give another perspective beyond TRPs. Firstly Sony is not a new channel and should have learnt lessons from its other competitors whether new or old hindi channels by now.
In the last few years its week day seasonal TV shows like Indian Idol and KBC and weekend shows like Super Dancer and Kapil Sharma show have become hugely successful in terms of dedicated viewership, acclaims, popularity, content, ad revenues and also high TRPs. Then why not its prime time fiction shows?? Only concept and good launch strategies can't sell a daily soap, SonyTV as an Indian channel part of hindi GEC bandwagon badly needs to re-assess its marketing, branding & promotion strategies on an ongoing basis for its daily fiction shows while it seems to be getting it right on how it packages, brands and promotes non-fiction shows going all out of its way..😊
Can any regular hindi TV audience could imagine a decade back that a show on transgender lead as a concept would be rolled out on a prime time slot by Colors channel and it would succeed in fetching sustained viewership within first few months of its telecast in addition to critical acclaim, revenues, TRPs and popularity?? 😳
So not just some niche concept or its popular star cast, but character sketches of main leads, their emotional connect, presentation of tracks, right and continuous promotions in initial months, onscreen chemistry of leads etc.helps develop viewership for a daily soap steadily, whether its finite or infinite series. When Life Ok channel got re-branded as Star Bharat in Aug 2017 they have launched all new daily soaps of different genres with niche concepts that can attract diverse Indian audience. While couple of shows may look OTT or cliched, but overall there is a huge variety that the channel currently offers between 7pm-10pm band though their fiction shows may not have grandeur or high budgets. And by Nov 2017 most of its fiction shows both in urban & rural regions have established a steady viewership and channel outreach is far better than Sony now.😊 Sorry to say, but in current times its a wrong assumption that only some house wives or senior citizens watch TV soaps. Prime time evening shows especially between 8-11 pm are also watched by youngsters and men in the family.
