16 Years After Its Release, Farhan Akhtar Explains Why Dil Chahta Hai

Farhan Akhtar's directorial debut Dil Chahta Hai is one of the most loved films and that's the reason why there has always been a lot of buzz around its sequel.

Even though it has been 16 years since the film released but until today, DCH fans have been hoping to see the trio come together for a sequel. While the reports of a sequel have also been there, director Farhan Akhtar spoke to media and said that he is not in a mood to pen down the sequel.

Even though there were reports that a sequel is in the pipeline, Farhan said,

"I have not considered taking the film forward. I feel there was a certain energy, mood and a time in my life when Dil Chahta Hai's story happened and that's why I wrote it. Now if I think of [a sequel], I will be forcing the issue. It will be a case of what more should I say now. What was great about the film, when it happened, that there was no design."

Farhan believes that DCH is a character-driven film and everything should fall into place organically and not forced. He added,

"The minute we start thinking seriously that I have to do a sequel to it, then design comes into play. That is something I want to avoid."

Well, even though this may break a lot of hearts, it's rather sensible of Akhtar to not give in to the demands and pen down a sequel which could possibly never match up to the standards of the first one.

Farhan Akhtar, who was relatively unknown at that time, changed the way Bollywood perceived friendships, and forever. Those confusions mingling with the tensions, that quest to find true love and the zeal to make a career and earn enoughthe movie connected so well with the youth that even 17 years after its release, it is still relevant and generations to come will endure it.

But if ever a sequel is made, we cannot imagine anybody else but Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna play the roles of childhood best friends Akash Malhotra, Sameer Mulchandani and Siddharth "Sid" Sinha, can we?

And so, just like us, you'll be shocked to know that neither Aamir and nor Saif were the first choices to play these roles in the film. Yes, that's true, and you can take a moment to gulp down the fact before knowing who the first choices were.

So, Farhan Akhtar, who directed and wrote the film, was Neha Dhupia's show recently, where he revealed about it all.

"I wanted Akshaye Khanna to play Akash, Hrithik Roshan for Sameer and Abhishek Bachchan for Siddharth (Sid).

"But films are generally made with a cast which was not on your wish list.

The three roles are etched in the hearts of those who have watched the film, and we just cannot imagine anyone else in those shoes. If at all a sequel is made, we root for Aamir, Akshaye and Saif to be back with a thunder! What say?
