We know the kapoor clan is one of the biggest "pure" bollywood families out there, Rishi Kapoor was one of the best actors imo to come out of that family. How successful was he as a lead actor?? Did he reach the fame that Ranbir had a few years back or of his contemporaries such as Amitabh and Dharmendra?

Rishi constantly got movies and gave hits If that is what you are asking. He was mismatch in action period. But AB solely dominated 70 and 80's. All others had reductive kind of impact. Action and masala movies was at its peak. Still his Bo record suggest he had more success than his son though his son has greater repute and that could be because Ranbir's movie choices are more personal and tough act to follow.

Rishi worked mostly in romantic movies , social movies as solo and as parallel lead in masala or Light hearted comedy movies, romance is where he made his mark. He worked in big banner studios of that time like yash raj ,b r chopra, Nasir Hussein. And with directors like mammohan Desai. And his dad took him once in a while. If you compare him with his son , he had more BO success and worked in more genres including mystery, social, comedy, romance, masala...

There is no such concept as pure blood. History has shown that Kapoor sons -if they clicked they hit big and worked for long period of time. Otherwise you have no starters like randhir and Chimpu. They are considered as good luck charm as they usually work in industry till they die and have good success rate at box office. And each kapoor is differant from other making this family very interesting, Their history started roughly at same time as Bollywood started. Hence they are called as first family of Bollywood. And yes they also own working studio... 😊

I think as bw moved towards 70s.. action heros were appreciated more and he just didn't fit that action hero image. That may have hurt him.. he is not the only that was affected by it though.. the likes of Rajesh Khanna faded out too.. Rishi would have done a lot better than Ranbir if he was to come around this time.

He just didn't look like an action hero and nobody could take him serious.. so he end up as mere psychic or second fiddle to the likes of Amitabh, and other action heroes.

shout out to his performance in Laila manjnun... a very well made movie.. and his performance was flaw less..

He wasn't a lead actor except in his Dad's films and romantic films. But I enjoy his work.
He was nowhere near Amitabh or Dharmendra. Why single out action films? Jeetendra was famous for his south remake social dramas in that same era and still he was a top star and in the big league which Rishi was never a part of.

Notice how I said Jeetendra was "a" top star with his social dramas. Not "the" topmost star. Also the whole point was that Rishi Kapoor didn't lose out on lead roles only because he wasn't an action star. Pretty self-explanatory really.

Btw, I don't think Sunil Dutt was ever in the top list. Shashi Kapoor and Rishi only part of ensembles. That's end of discussion from my side. People who want to portray Rishi as the top superstar are welcome to do so.

Agree,at one time jeetendera gave back to back hits and Amitabh was struggling with flop movies like Mahan Barsaat ki ek Raat ,Nastik and so many others and jeetendera was on the top with back to back hits like Meri awaaz suno, farz aur kannoon ,Tohfa and himmatwalla..
Rishi and shashi were nowhere.

Some actors stardom gets insanely overrated, and others insanely underrated.

Rishi Kapoor was not a Superstar, Never. Not even close. He was barely a survivor. His only claim to fame is his longevity. He saw everyone's era from Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Bachchan to Sunny, Anil to the Khans.
Jeetendra was a superstar. You could argue he was number 1 from 82-86 with many top grossers.
Sunil Dutt was not a superstar. Rajendra Kumar was just as big as the trio of Dilip-Dev-Raj but gets overlooked constantly.

Have no idea how he was according to BO, but he is my fav hero of d 70s. Also I suppose in that period AB loomed large and hence his contemporaries were overlooked. But Rishi did have some blockbuster solo hits like Laila Majnu n Karz etc.
Then in d 80s he continued with romantic movies and starred with actresses like Sri, Juhi and Madhuri. And I like d kind of movies he's doing now.

Don't think his and Ranbir's success can be compared as totally different eras.
