While 90s had some really talented dancers like Sridevi, Divya, Madhuri etc. now it seems like almost all gennext actresses lack this skill.
Maybe the actresses now are able to dance perfectly without missing on a single step..shake their hips & booties.. but they seem to lack the rhythm, ease and grace..that flow and sync seems to be missing.

Who all from the current gen do you think can come up to the level of actresses from the 90s when it comes to dancing?

Back in the day, one of the prerequisites for an actress apart from being beautiful, was being able to dance. Acting wasn't given a lot of importance because there weren't too many great parts for actresses. As long as they could show a few expressions, they used to manage fine. Hence almost every actress from the 90s was also a good dancer.

But almost all these 90s actresses were outsiders. Except Karisma in the 90s, almost no one else was a starkid (although Karisma kind of went through the struggles of an outsider and was also a very good dancer so it's truly an exception. And when you are not a starkid, and are determined to be an actress, you have to truly fight and stand out to be selected for a film. And they all put efforts and succeeded.

But in the newer generation, there are way too many starkids - Kareena, Sonam, Athiya, Sonakshi, Alia, etc. they all can hardly dance well. Only because it's been an easy path for them: they got movies probably without even deserving them. People like Shraddha, who despite being an industry kid couldn't get a great launch because her dad wasn't a big star, worked hard, learned ballet and kathak and became a good dancer. The others are just lazy and take it for granted because they get movies on a platter.

So yeah, nepotism is to be blamed for this.

We still have quite a few outsiders though like Yami, Parineeti, Kriti and though they can shake their booties to fast numbers, they are still lacking the grace and effortlessness. Shraddha was good in sun saathiya but even she comes across as stiff when compared to stars of 90s. Especially if you watch them perform during awards.

We had trained classical dancers or people who were naturally graceful.. Ash, Madhuri I know were trained dancers. I have heard PC was trained in some classical dance form, not sure. Does not reflect in her dancing IMO.
Sridevi is an example of someone who is not trained in dance but who can dance well. But bad choreography can make even a trained dancer look bad. Case in point Jaya Prada in that stupid Dufli Waale song.

Kat is a wonderful dancer, but looked rather terrible in Kamli. Deepika danced difficult steps in Nagda Sang Dhol but "danced" rather terribly in Raabta.

IMO it is a combination of training, how in touch they are with that training, choreography.

ETA: I really liked Vani dancing in Nashe Se. Did not expect that at all.

Parineeti had the Chopra surname and she did take advantage of it as all she used to say during awards and IVs was the tagline Chopra sisters.

Raveena, Tabu, Farha, Nagma, Twinkle, Kajol from 90's were all insiders. The whole nepotism screaming started during that era. Producers started launching their daughters / star daughters... 😛 😆

I wan't talking about the flop stars like Farha or Nagma or Twinkle. Kajol, Tabu and Raveena yes. And Kajol and Tabu are bad dancers although Raveena was alright.

I think grace is something that comes naturally. It's either there or it's not. Divya Bharti was very graceful (maybe even more than Madhuri) her every move used to be effortless, easy and in flow ('saat samunder' and 'tujhe na dekhoon' anyone?). If only she had been around longer... and of course Madhuri had that adaa too.

From current lot I cannot think of anyone. Certainly the likes of Alia, Shraddha and Kriti can get their steps 'right' but that's about it.
