Can someone clarify the purpose of hat?

I loved the episode but wanted to see if someone can clairfy. How dev got to know that vicky is plotting and how he proved it to sonakshi?? By asking her to put a hat on vicky?

Vicky said he went to greet Soha on her bday with Vanila cake and didnt tell anyone n Soha was very happy n Soha shouted at them for not getting vanila cake. So Dev inferred from that V is trying to get close to Soha to hurt Dev.

Purpose of hat was just to delay Vicki meeting Soha and to give time to Dev to come to the bday party. Vicki's intention was that Dev shud miss Soha's bday celebrations n Soha further angry with Dev.
