Prologue
She walked down the long empty corridor, flipping the lights off. No one had ever asked her to do that, it wasn't her duty even. But she'd forever been doing things beyond her duty, beyond necessities.
The empty landing made her a bit emptier. Another day ended, with nothing fruitful. Nothing at all.
She pressed 'Basement'. The elevator was empty as well. She checked the time. 8:45. She remebered she had last checked the time at 6:30. A sarcastic smile appeared at one corner of her lips.
As she walked past the night security personnel, he stood up and smiled. She gestured him to sit and walked towards her car.
The phone began ringing, reverberating through the almost deserted basement with a few security personnel standing in disorder.
She picked it up with a disgusted expression.
" Shayara... are you home? "
" Not yet. "
" Thank God! Thank God! Can you do me a favour sweetheart? "
Her sarcastic smile returned.
I am always doing that.
" What is the job? "
" I have another meeting in ten minutes. An unplanned one which I gotta attend. Can you please pick Devrath from the airport? He'll land in an hour. I had promised him and now if I don't at least send someone, it will be so awkward... "
Her heart skipped for a moment.
" ... I ... " , she hesitated, undecided.
Say no. Please.
"...errmm... fine. I'll. Heading to the airport in no time. "
She cut the call without listening to the 'thank you's being showered.
Damn!
Despite the vigorous efforts and plans she had been making to not face the person in question, despite the million rehearsals of excuses she had already undergone, what did just happen?
She covered her mouth with a palm and stood startled before her car.
This isn't happening.
But it did. It had to.
After almost an hour, she sat still on the driver's seat, with a man beside her, who wasn't even sure of what was happening.
As soon as she had seen him approach the Arrival, she had waved. And as soon as she knew he had seen her, she had turned and started walking, making sure he followed.
As both of them reached the car, she had known he was smiling and specifically wanting to ask something, but she didn't for a moment look at him, and he being he, had slowly stopped smiling.
She carefully took his luggage, and he had very softly uttered an " I'll do..." , but she didn't bother and dumped his single bag pack to the back seat, opened the front door for him, and settled herself on the driving seat, without even glancing at him once in the process.
He too had got in...very uncomfortably. But she knew she couldn't make things more comfortable for him.
Much needed discomfort.
After a very long time, he slowly uttered,
" I didn't really hope to see you at the arrival. But I must say, I'm pleased.
Finally we met. "
She looked at him. For the first time. Because she knew, anything beyond this would be plain cruelty and disrespect. So she threw a very formal smile.
And distinctly uttered, " I didn't really hope too, to drive you from the airport after a long and hectic day. Neither am I quite pleased.
But yes... I finally met... My boyfriend's best friend. "
