What Desigal and Chudailpapi said.
Imtiaz' movies are based on his own self-reflections. And, over the years, he's become increasingly drab himself. That has reflected in his movies.
Jab We Met was a typical Bollywood love story. It was beautifully made. It was quintessentially a celebration of love and coming of age. SNT shared the same ideology. It was Bollywood through and through. It had an innate cheerfulness.
Love Aaj Kal was Imti's first rom-com. If SNT and JWM were homages to love, LAK started Imti's journey into the dread of love. Then came the self-depreciating, bruised, and angsty Rockstar--almost a celebration of the pains in love. That was the turning point for Imtiaz Ali's movies.
As Chudailpaapi said, Highway doesn't form the set. It was also based on the short from Rishtey. I do find it Imtiaz's most mature movie to day and probably his second best after JWM. As art, it's his best movie. And, here, here is the solution.
Imtiaz should stick to a Highway or a Socha Na Tha than venture into a Tamasha or Love Aaj Kal. I haven't watched Jab Harry Met Sejal, so I cannot comment there. These big budget movies aren't for everyone.
Imtiaz Ali is an auteur. I rate him very highly. Even if JHMS is poorly made, it doesn't change anything. He's a filmmaker who understands cinema. As a filmmaker, he's someone I rate higher than Kabir Khan, who I feel talks a lot without saying much.
The problem with Bollywood is budgeting these days. If you can keep it low, even art films would succeed. Look at Badlapur, it was a hit. Haidar and Highway are as niche as it can get without treading into experimental zones of a No Smoking or Ship of Theseus, and they didn't flop at the boxoffice.
You can't spend 100 crores on movies like JHMS or Tubelight. They're simply not massy enough. And, the problem with both movies (I haven't watched JHMS, just assuming) - it seems is the desire to re-create the magic of DDLJ (with JHMS) and Bajrangi (with Tubelight).
At least, with Tubelight we know Kabir/Salman wanted to milk as much as he could by rehashing Bajrangi. That's not how it works. If it were only that simple..
