I think it is very wise to turn down the role for the reasons given. Not in the exact words, but he is admitting he is not talented enough yet. Nepotism gives you the luxury of doing as you please. But from another point of view, it does take courage to admit your shortcomings and pass the opportunity to others. I guess I am ever the naive optimist.

Varun is probably weighing everything and if he has concerns, why do it? I think that in itself shows he is serious about his career and especially sensitive to his audience (the people who are paying to see him, not just personal satisfaction). It's clear he wants to do good work and broaden out (Shoojit film) but don't think he's willing to risk the commercial side of it all the way either. I wish the fact that his films have been profitable this far is justification enough for him getting more roles.
I don't get the nepotism point here though - if they accept the role, it's because of nepotism they got it in the first place and if they reject it then they are too high handed because of nepotism. 😕 Let him breathe. 😆

@red - When I said the same thing in another topic, everyone and their moms were on my head that I am stopping VD from experimenting

I also said that let VD do what he is best at and by this decision he has proved that he also knows his strengths and weakness.
So its a good decision. He isn't falling into the usual trap .

As an actor ,if he feels he can't pull of a certain role or is too early for him to play or in other words he isn't confident of the film.Good,he shouldn't do it.He would know better what he wants to do n when.
While I'd never like him to play safe (& Badlapur wasn't a safe film to do either)but it's equally foolish to do something coz oh you wanna prove you're different. He has enough time but shouldn't take long either.
And it has nothing to do with experimenting or even sticking to the same sets of roles/films or being limited as an actor.
He is not flop proof ..so if one thinks he is doing it to keep his record intact then it's amusing to say the least.
I'd have loved it if he could do it considering the current fame of the director but not sure if his next would be as good as his last story wise.

Anyway,I just hope Varun won't regret his decision. If the director thought he could do it,I'm sure he had seen something in him .

This is weird considering Varun did like the article post which suggested that he loved the script & his role but his schedule is an issue which is understandable since he'd be busy with "October" & "Sui dhaaga" till Aug-Sept 2018.
And I do believe he isn't one those actors who sign too many films simultaneously, then don't accommodate dates hence end up blocking/stringing good directors & delaying projects...😆

P.S. - People just love inserting "N" word irrespective of the context 😆

There is nothing wrong in building a career according to his strengths. Good for him for having a plan. If he is not hard working I will be the first to diss him. But he seems to know himself and his strengths and weaknesses. Nothing wrong with that. In fact, respect for sticking to what he wants his career to look like.

Such a great opportunity that he is throwing away because he can afford to. Thousands of actors serious about their craft would jump at such an opportunity. But thanks to nepotism, he can do as he wish.

I agree but I am also glad that he turned it down because this one is obviously not cut out for meaningful, performance-oriented movies with his crappy acting chops!
So he better stick to masala potboilers like MTH, Judwaa and Dishoom because he is tailor-made for that kind of genre!

Oh and before anyone throws Badlapur into the mix...please don't bother because I have seen that film and he was easily the weakest link who got overshadowed by the strong supporting players!

Another example of someone who gets movies despite a million flops. Varun is so blah. I used to find him hot and good looking, but not anymore....
