Aamir Khan has finally addressed one of Bollywood's longest-running myths surrounding 3 Idiots. The actor has made it clear that his beloved character, Phunsukh Wangdu, also known as Rancho, was never inspired by Ladakhi engineer and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk. While clearing the air, Aamir also voiced his concern over Wangchuk's ongoing hunger strike, urging him to put his health first.

Aamir Khan Ends Years Of Speculation Around Phunsukh Wangdu

For years, many believed that the central character of 3 Idiots was modelled on Sonam Wangchuk because of the similarities between the film's message and Wangchuk's work in education. However, Aamir Khan has now dismissed that belief.

Speaking during a post-screening interaction at the London Indian Film Festival, the actor explained that neither he nor the film's creative team knew Sonam Wangchuk when 3 Idiots was being developed. According to Aamir, the popular assumption simply isn't true.

He also pointed out that Wangchuk's achievements do not need a Bollywood connection to earn respect. Aamir praised the education reformer's contribution to society, saying his work speaks for itself and deserves appreciation on its own.

Aamir Corrects Omi Vaidya's Viral Statement

The clarification also comes after a recent video by Aamir's 3 Idiots co-star Omi Vaidya, who played Chatur Ramalingam, went viral online. In the clip, Omi expressed support for Sonam Wangchuk's protest and suggested that the character of Phunsukh Wangdu had been based on him.

Aamir disagreed with that claim and stated that Omi's remark was factually incorrect. His response settles the confusion that resurfaced on social media after the video gained traction, with many users asking the actor to share his side of the story.

Support For Wangchuk's Cause, But Concern Over His Health

Although Aamir denied any link between 3 Idiots and Sonam Wangchuk, he strongly backed the reformer's efforts. Wangchuk is currently on an indefinite hunger strike at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, demanding accountability and major reforms in India's education system following the NEET examination paper leak controversy.

Reports suggest that the prolonged fast has severely affected his health, with noticeable weight loss and worrying drops in blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Doctors and supporters have expressed growing concern as the protest continues.

Acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, Aamir appealed to Wangchuk to consider ending his fast. While appreciating his commitment to educational reform, the actor said many people are now hoping he prioritises his well-being, stressing that his contribution to society remains valuable regardless of any cinematic association.
