The Real Reason Why Varun Dhawan Said "No to Dangal' Director

Which Bollywood actor would reject a film with Nitesh Tiwari, the director of Dangal, arguably the most successful Bollywood film of all time?

But Varun Dhawan did just that. Tiwari's new film is an adaptation of young entrepreneur Varun Aggarwal's self-inspired novel How I BravedAnu Aunty & Co-Founded A Million Dollar Company. While there are gasps of disbelief about Varun saying "no to the Dangal director, the real reason behind it is not known to many.

I'd love to play these glorious people who brought such recognition to the country. But to be very honest, I don't think I am emotionally or spiritually equipped to handle such roles. Maybe later in my career. But right I don't want to play real-life characters.
Varun Dhawan, Actor

This is the third such project of immense prestige that Varun has resolutely turned down. Earlier he was offered the chance to play the legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand and the Olympian shooter Abhinav Bindra.

Not emotionally or spiritually equipped? What does that even mean? In other words, is he saying he can't pull it off thanks to lack of talent?

Such a great opportunity that he is throwing away because he can afford to. Thousands of actors serious about their craft would jump at such an opportunity. But thanks to nepotism, he can do as he wish.

Good decision. One should be able to identify one's limitations and work accordingly.

There was another article which said Varun had read the script and didn't feel it had much entertainment potential as the book was more like a how-to guide to aspiring entrepreneurs. His script sense is sharp and he probably doesn't want to take on a risky project with low chances of box office success. This 'not emotionally equipped' is just a diplomatic reason for dropping out lol.

Fair enough it is his choice
If he does not feel comfortable with a role
He has the option and scope to refuse it
Perhaps he did not have a good feeling about the film

I think this is a good thing. If he thinks he cannot do justice to the role, it's better to say no. Who knows, maybe an outsider will end up doing it. 😊
It's nice to see that Varun has the self-awareness to know what he can and cannot do. Many lack this.

He has mentioned before many times that he does want to do a biopic in this stage of his career. And just because it is the Dangal director doesn't mean that the film is guaranteed to be a good story or even commercially viable (Vikas Behl followed Queen with a film as poor as Shaandaar)...

Varun is probably weighing everything and if he has concerns, why do it? I think that in itself shows he is serious about his career and especially sensitive to his audience (the people who are paying to see him, not just personal satisfaction). It's clear he wants to do good work and broaden out (Shoojit film) but don't think he's willing to risk the commercial side of it all the way either. I wish the fact that his films have been profitable this far is justification enough for him getting more roles.
I don't get the nepotism point here though - if they accept the role, it's because of nepotism they got it in the first place and if they reject it then they are too high handed because of nepotism. 😕 Let him breathe. 😆

I dont know if an actor says he is not interested in doing biopic, why directors keep offering him that. Although it's good he seems to be the blue-eyed boy for many directors. 😉

Nitish Tiwari's only successful record is Dangal, more than half credit would go to Amir Khan. I dont know why he is hailed as Raju Hirani. Queen director after 1 successful project, delivered Shaandaar. Dangal means nothing in front of Kill Dil (not as director though), Bhoothnath Returns and Chillar Party. 🤔 He is no RH.

After his Badlapur I wouldn't question the risks he's willing take to onscreen

So if he genuinely didn't like the character or even biopics I believe him

Another example of someone who gets movies despite a million flops. Varun is so blah. I used to find him hot and good looking, but not anymore....
