If anyone who had seen him a few months ago looked at him now, he'd have been thought to be two completely different persons. The weary man propped up on his elbow, hovering over the sleeping form next to him, resembled someone at peace, wonder and even a whisper of a smile adorning his dreamy face, something no one had witnessed in a very long time. He reached out his other hand, his fingers running along her cheeks so gently, as if they were tiptoeing, which still seemed more rosy than usual, and they were stained with dry tears from last night, as were his. His mind flashed back to the moment he had first met her, to all their tashn and taadi filled encounters, all their cute and loving memories and he mentally cringed as he thought of the bitter, hurt filled months that had now flew by. Dismissing those thoughts, he smiled, fresh tears forming as he realized she was there, with him. The night before, he had brought her home. The entire family was whole, happy, everything seemed right again. He had cried in her arms as she did in his, overwhelmed at the turn of events, overwhelmed that they'd even get to feel the intimate touch of each other's skin once more.
His thoughts were suddenly brought to a halt as beams of the warm, morning sunlight shone down on them, the curtains blowing in the wind, allowing the bright and blinding rays to infiltrate his room. Their room. The woman sleeping next to him flinched a little and furrowed her eyebrows, groaning and shifting more toward him in her sleep, hiding in his shadow looming over her, while he trailed his hand to her waist, gently pulling her into him, so as to hide her face in his chest, leaving no stone unturned for her first peaceful and proper slumber in months to be undisturbed. He then glided his fingers through her hair softly, looking down at her. She was thinner now, she wasn't the same feisty lady-love. He had seen glimpses recently but never the same as the way she was before. He planned to make up for everything she had gone through, just for him. To feed her day and night, even if it was only oily aloo puri she wanted. To let her shower her taadi on him, even if he ended up drenched and with another broken windscreen. He let a sad chuckle escape him as he remembered the way he screamed at her for taking decisions for him without letting him know, the way she cried because she had been in just as much pain as him.
"Not anymore, my Ani." He whispered to her, or to himself, he was not quite sure, but he bent to drop a kiss on her hair, and as if sensing him, she curled into his body, her curves pressing into him, her arms wrapping around his torso and he smiled in comfort when her warm steady breath caressed his chest, thanks to his open kurta buttons at the top.
He closed his eyes, reveling in the moment, a moment of pure bliss. His wife, tucked into his body, which almost seemed like a dream after being without the feel of her creamy silky skin against his for months, her arms around him, holding him as if there were no tomorrow, his arm draped on her waist, drifting to her hair and face occasionally, as they lay on their bed, in their room. It felt surreal and before he realized, a tear rolled down his cheek.
From the moment Shivaay had pressed his lips against her hair, she had known he was up. She inwardly groaned because thanks to her light sleeping, she would also be fully up just now. Still in semi slumber, she felt his touch, his fingers in her hair, hell, she almost felt his thoughts through her very own skin and cocooned herself into him subconsciously. And when she felt something cold and wet hit her forehead, her eyes finally cracked opened, to the sight of his chest. Pressing a kiss there, she asked, "You're up already? and pulled out of his embrace to look at him.
Smiling down at her, he grinned slightly, "It's you who always wakes up late, my Khumbkaran, or have you forgotten already?" He kissed her forehead and she crinkled her eyebrows, remembering what woke her up.
"I didn't forget anything." She smiled nostalgically, and let her fingers trail over his face, his forehead, his eyes, down his pointed nose and as she brushed her thumb across his lips, they kissed her softly. She drawled herself up, meeting his face and sitting up a little, before going forward to kiss away the tears that were now beginning to fall again.
"Don't you think we've cried enough last night?" She said, but her own eyes brimmed for she knew very well what he was feeling.
"I don't think I will ever get over this feeling, of waking up, and seeing you here, where you should be." He said softly, looking into her eyes and interlocking their fingers.
"I'm here to stay, so fear not, you'll get accustomed to it.
"Hamesha." he commanded, yet it sounded like a question, which she had already answered a million times the previous night.
She sighed and ran her palm through his hair, and leaned up to him, catching him off guard a little by pressing her lips against his for a quick peck. "Hamesha." She confirmed as she released his lips, breathing the very words which awarded him a soothing feeling in his heart.
As she moved away, they both zoned out for a few seconds, recounting their first kiss. Their lips were quivering, trembling against each other, pressing against each other as they attempted to bring their cries to an end. All they ended up with was a salty taste on their lips, as if destiny wanted them to taste each other's tear stained memories, those horrific moments spent in each other's absence.
First kisses were meant to be sweet, fleeting, to give you butterflies, to cause that churning in your stomach that felt good. Yet they hadn't a mere chance for those fuzzy feelings.
They were way past that, as his lips ran across hers, as if they were old friends, trying to find their way back between her rosy pink ones, seeking solace, seeking a place called home.
He was the first to break their silence, their thoughts.
"Kiss me again." He said, a hint of mischief accentuating the warmth that oozed out of his dilated pupils, his blue orbs smiling into her chocolate brown, doe-like ones.
She knew why and wasted not even a moment before placing a soft kiss on his lips again, smiling into him.
"Did you feel that?" he asked, nuzzling her cheek with his nose, and dropping a kiss there.
She nodded, admitting to that soaring yet comforting feeling in the depths of her stomach, a glow on her cheeks and her eyes becoming full of life, just as his did.
"I love you." She said it simply, plainly, her eyes dazed as she cupped his cheek and he kissed the inside of her palm.
"And I love you." He replied, kissing the tip of every finger, and he knew he would not get tired of saying those words to her, ever.
Her lips broke into a smile, her eyes glistening with happy tears as she thought of her luck. This time nothing would go wrong; this time, this was it. They hadn't said it, but they knew, that now, nothing in this universe would ever commit the sin of even the thought of splitting them apart. He read her thoughts and nodded a little, pushing her back down on their bed fully before laying on top of her, her arms snaking around his neck, and he brushed his lips against her nose before dipping his head to capture her lips, into their first kiss beyond the aftermath. Their first kiss that wasn't through tears, that was not dripping of nostalgia or wanting to feel what a first real kiss without trembling lips of the past would be like. His lips latched between hers, softly and then firmly, as their hearts exploded, confidently soaring because they knew this was just the beginning, the first truly happy kiss free from tears, from capturing memories. Like long time lovers they kissed, softly, and then more intensely, playfully, giggling against each other as he pretended to kiss her again before pulling away while she leaned up, impatiently waiting.
When he decreased the distance again, he let his lips linger, and they found themselves exploring a new level of intensity as he let his tongue trace her lip, and she let him in without wasting a fraction of a second, inhaling sharply as their tongues met, their lip locks becoming noisier and more and more satisfying.
When he rested his forehead against her as they both caught their breaths, she couldn't help but say, "Woah, that was better than last night."
He smiled and pressed his lips to the corner of her mouth and said, "That's because we're healing, now, slowly."
"Hmm I guess you're right. Slowly, bit by bit, every day." She gazed at him lazily, as she saw images of the days to come flashing before her. There was once a time when she never thought she'd have another day with him, and here she was, a willing victim to the kisses he peppered across her jaw, as she could clearly envision an abundance of days and journeys yet to come, with the man in her arms at her side, every day, every step of the way.
Again, he read that look in her eyes, and blinked, agreeing that though life was no guarantee, the rest of what they had would without a doubt, be spent together, as one.
"Maybe we should heal some more." He grinned, before swooping down, parting her lips with his, his wife happily complying.
The almost inaudible buzzing sound of Shivaay's phone broke their kiss and he sighed as he reached across her to retrieve it from the bedside table.
Seeing the name flashing across the screen, they both were a little confused as to why Rudra was calling them, when he was in the same house, at 7:30 am. His shoulders tensed, wondering if something was wrong but Annika just pressed her lips to his shoulder and swiped his phone, putting it on speaker, answering their much loved little baby brother.
"Rudra? Is everything okay?" Shivaay asked, and Annika shook her head. This man just knew how to worry himself.
"Bhaiya! You're up. I was now about to hang up thinking you were still asleep. I didn't wake you right?" Rudra said, his voice full of life, causing Annika to smile from ear to ear. Everyone was so happy.
"Nahi Rudy, we were already up. What's up?" Shivaay asked, breathing a sigh of relief and rolling off Annika, lying next to her as he put the phone on her tummy, just above where his arm was.
"Oh you both are up. Bhabhi too? Waw late lateef is changing?" Rudra grinned, mocking his brother's description of his Bhabhi.
"Hey I heard that." Annika chided.
"Oh Good morning Bhabhii! And don't scold me, scold Shivaay Bhaiya, he taught me to say that. Although, I don't think you would be in the mood to scold him haw?" He teased and Annika squinted her eyes at Shivaay for infiltrating her Rudy boy's mind with his stupid nicknames, but when Shivaay bit his lip and grinned before pressing a kiss to her arm, she shrugged him off, blushing and shaking her head.
"So, if your moment is over, can you guys get changed and let us in? We have a surprise for you! " He teased when they were silent for a few moments. They heard Om and Bhavya in the background gasping and Om yelling his standard "Shut up Rudra."
"Rudra fhat the wuck!" Shivaay's eyes bulged at what his little brother was implying and Annika stifled her laughter, before Shivaay too, shook his head grinning.
"Sorry Bhaiya, but yes, get ready, we'll be at your door in 10 minutes." Saying so, he hung up.
"Rudra bhi na. "Shivaay blushed as he played over his brother's words.
"Family bimmari hai..Looks like you brothers are always on that track." Annika shook her head and pressed her lips together, shaking her head in disdain.
"Maybe it's time for us to get on that track again huh, and no running away this time." He said slyly, kissing her cheek and pressing kisses down the side of her face, to her neck, as Annika's hand cupped the back of his neck involuntarily, surrendering to the feeling of his wet kisses, awakening things inside her she hadn't known she had felt, things he had only half awakened before she had left.
He breathed into the crook of her neck, lazily kissing her there, getting on top of her again as her hands slid up to his chest.
"What's that look? " He asked, furrowing his eyebrows.
"Nothing." And when he glared, "It's just.. Rudy's words," she chuckled slightly, "They're thinking something and the total opposite happened last night." She laughed adoringly at her brothers-in-law who were more like brothers to her, reflecting on the deep soulful connection she had with her husband the night before, almost giving way to another rounds of tears.
As she said this, Shivaay to recounted the night before. He smiled thinking of the way her cries racked through his body and he kissed her face, swallowing her tears, rubbing her back and kissing her hands, telling her how much he loved her, how much he needed her, how he'd never spend another moment with any other woman, even if platonic or out of spite, no matter who forced him to, no matter what she does. Thoughts drifted to him making her promise never to leave him again, no matter who forced her to, no matter the consequence. She gulped as she recalled the man she always knew to stand tall, whimpering against her bosom, tears rolling down his bloodshot eyes as she leaned down to kiss them, let alone his eyes, his hands, his neck, her hair, any part of him in reach. With every touch of her hands and lips she assured him, she was there and would always be. She smiled a ghostly smile as she remembered how she confessed the exact moment she had known she was in love with him, and he had gasped against her lap before pulling her down to him, kissing her and telling her that he never knew it was love, but he had felt for her since the beginning of time; the moment she made her way into his heart was vague as she had been there all along.
Snapping her out of her thoughts, he replaced a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "We needed that last night. Desperately. "
She nodded, fully agreeing and leaning up to kiss his chin, bubbles of laughter escaping her as his beard tickled her.
Seeing this, he bent to rub his cheek against hers, tickling her even more, but more than that, sending shivers down her spine and her eyes fluttered close.
"Maybe we could live up to their expectations tonight." He said in a husky tone, looking at her state, and taking her in for a hazy kiss, his tongue exploring every inch of her mouth, stroking hers in a way that made even him shudder.
A knock on the door ended their kiss with a loud smooch and he pecked her cheek lightly before getting up to open it.
Annika sat up properly, folding their blanket and keeping it aside as she saw OmRu And Gauri and Bhavya enter with a trolley full of breakfast things.
"Good morning!" they all smiled to her and proudly presented their surprise to the happy couple.
They served Shivaay and Annika and were about to leave when both looked up confused.
"Where are you guys going?" Shivaay asked,
"Outside to have breakfast too." Gauri said.
"Nahi , there is no need, stay here. We will all have breakfast together."
And so the three couples sat on Shivika's bed, eating and talking animatedly, Rudra and Annika stealing the show with their silly jokes, OmRu poking fun and teasing Shivaay about his Devdas mood. Not to mention all four embarrassing Shivika, teasing them to no end, but also admiring them for their love which conquered all.
"Bhabhi, do you remember that time before Malika came and we all made breakfast for you and Bhaiya and forced you to have a breakfast date." Rudra grinned.
"Of course. Do you know this bhagad billa was soo uncomfortable, fidgeting as if I would eat him." Annika rolled her eyes.
"As if you were any less." Shivaay shot back.
"Ohhh, ab tashnbaazi shuru ho gayi! " Bhavya said, amused at witnessing the very truth Rudra had oh so many times told her about Shivaay and Annika.
Shivaay and Annika looked at each other, zoning out in a private moment as they recalled the same detail.
"Where are you two lost? Om broke them out of it, smiling, awaiting the story that was brewing in their eyes.
Annika grinned and motioned for Shivaay to tell them, who sorely denied. And so, Annika launched into telling them about Shivaay thinking she had asked him to marry her, whereas she had been simply talking about her job of planning his wedding.
All burst out, snickering at Shivaay for being crazy for Annika even then, all the while masking it with irritation.
He shook his head, unable to deny and winked at Annika.
"At least now you don't have to force us, we don't mind having breakfast dates, that too without planning my wedding." He grinned.
And all smiled, seeing Shivaay openly flirt with Annika. OmRu admired him, boy how he had changed from then till now. Meanwhile, Gauri and Bhavya felt a warmth in their hearts seeing their previously broken Bade Bhaiya, now whole again, smiling like never before.
After breakfast, the youngsters left the newly reunited couple to themselves, knowing that today was all about the duo being together. Every day after as well, of course, but there was just something special about this day. The entire family expected Shivaay and Annika to stay in all day and that's why the four-o had thought of making them breakfast in bed.
The morning passed with Shivaay and Annika lying in bed together, talking, kissing, teasing each other, catching up on lost time. After all, time isn't at our mercy; rather we live at the mercy of time. When so much had already been lost, neither had wanted to waste another moment. Shivaay continued to seal her into his world of caresses, of smooches, both wallowing in the love they had been denied.
Love was a tricky thing. So was timing. Sometimes love was not enough when time was wrong. And when the time was right, it was so damn right. The right love and the wrong time was just deathly, only the strongest could survive. And so, the lovers who were betrayed by time, were awarded a second chance to make it right, for time itself could not conquer the union of these two souls, the very two that made this universe whole.
