The only thing that crossed his mind was a question that was yet to be answered. What happened to her? Only yesterday she was happy about all Dayawanti mess ending up for good. Worry took him over and he immediately reached for her.
She was pulled out of the trance by Neil who was sitting next to her on the bed, worry and confusion radiating from his face. "Kya hua hai?" Neil asked her gently not expecting an answer as she was who she was. She continued staring at the wall and to Neil's surprise Avni slowly replied to him with "Aaj ke din Dayawanti Mehta ne meri mamma ko mujhse hamesha ke liye dhoor kiyaatha."
Neil's facial expression changed from worry to sadness. There was nothing he could do except one thing. Hesitantly, he drew Avni closer to him. Like an obedient child, she let him do it. She kept her head on his shoulder and he hugged her slightly from the side.
"Talk to me Avni. Tum mujse kuch bhi share kar sakti ho." He said to her knowing that she needed someone to talk to right now. A shoulder to cry on. A person who could console her. And he wanted to be the one.
"Ayesha Ma ke baare mein bhi? Tum sunoge?" Her heart was happy to hear his words. For the first time after a long time she felt like she wasn't alone. Maybe.
"Ofcourse! Ayesha Ma ke baare mein toh zaroor sunna hai mujhe." He was happy to see the sudden sparkle in her eyes. Avni talked about her Ayesha Ma for several minutes, non-stop and Neil kept listening to her and admiring her the whole time.
"Ayesha Ma was the person that chose to give me immense love when no one else dared to send my way an affectionate look. Not even my dad in the last moment. That person who was brave enough to stand firm the way she was in a world so cruel. World of Dayawantis and Ashishs. The person that fought through everything only for me until the last breath. The last, because Dayawanti Mehta left her with no other choice. 16 Years ago Ayesha Ma left me today Neil!" Neil hugged her tightly. He knew she was trying hard not to shatter infront of him.
"After so many years, months, weeks, days, minutes, hours and seconds without her, I still remember everything like it was yesterday. All the wounds lie unhealed deep inside my heart. All the love is kept unharmed in my every heartstring. All the memories are stored in every corner of my mind." A lone tear escaped Avni's eyes. A painful sound made its way through her trembling lips with the last line.
Neil pulled her out of the hug. She was silently crying. His heart was aching too. To see her crying so bitterly. To see her in so much pain. To know that she had been through so much. For a second, he even complained to his heart. Was this even fair to her?
He decided one thing the next minute. His goal from now on will be to keep her happy. To never let a single tear of pain fall from her eyes. To never let her heart ache so much. He promised himself to make Avni remember her Ayesha Ma with sweet memories and not with painful ones.
Neil cupped her face. "Shhh..Avni Shhh!! Rona band karo. Ayesha Ma ko accha lage ga kya?" Avni kept looking at Neil teary eyed. From the past few days she has realized one thing for sure. Neil cares for her like no one ever did. She stopped expecting people other than her Neela Ma, Nanno and Ali to care for her. But Neil has proved her wrong. And somewhere, somewhat the feeling brought her happiness.
"Ab chale?" Neil wiped her tears and broke the silence.
"Kahaa?" Avni asked confused.
"Ayesha Maa ke paas" Neil smiled a bit and Avni returned the smile faintly.
As they walked towards the gates of the Cemetery, Avni stopped Neil by grabbing his hand. He stopped surprised and raised his eyebrows.
"Thankyou." Avni smiled. And with that they both walked inside hand in hand knowingly or unknowingly.
