In the mid - the early 00s, he was the ideal boyfriend. From then until the late 2000s, he had the ideal husband image. And, since then, he's the quintessential family man. People connect to SRK on a personal level because he has a certain image. Even in KWK, when KJo asks actresses who they'd marry, date, and be friends with, the answer is SRK (marry), Aamir (date), and Salman (friend).
In contrast, let's talk about Salman's image. He's always portrayed the adarsha putra (ideal son) image on the screen and that's true off the screen too. In contrast to SRK, Salman has the image of an ideal son, the ideal brother. So, if K3G were Salman's real story.. He'd probably tell his Pa that he'd only date this girl and not marry her, so this way--Papa is khush, Mama is obviously khush because beta will stay with her, and Salman is khush because he gets to bang a bird without having to commit. đ That's Salman.
In fact, Salman is the Shree Ram of Bollywood. He has undying devotion for his parents. Like Ram, he'll dump his partner anytime--without any logic, but he won't go against his parents. In fact, he has multiple Moms like Ram did (and two nikamma brothers). đ˛ So, the whole Casanova image that Salman had at one point doesn't even matter anymore because he's this mata-pita bhakht son. đ
For SRK, it's the opposite. His image is of responsibility. If aunties forgive Salman for being natkhat (when he was younger), SRK is the ideal bade bhaiyya for many. You know, having a certain responsibility; the charming lover; the one who connects everyone together.. And, this image is more difficult to maintain.
Unlike these two, Aamir doesn't have a specific image. People admire him for his work than his image, which is why nobody seems to care if he's had such a controversial personal life--as a husband, especially.
This is also why Salman and SRK are personal stars. They're more intimate to India than Aamir. No disrespect obviously to Aamir, but you don't find Aamir fans getting personal as much as SRK/Salman fans do because their relationship with their fans is more personal than Aamir's with his. That's what I feel anyway.
Now, film audiences may have changed, but one of the reasons why Salman and SRK are so big is because they connected to people in a personal way. Aamir built a portfolio and gained acceptance. Today's stars, I believe, don't have that connect. They are good. People like them, but the personal connect is missing--whether it's Ranveer, Ranbir, or Varun. Hrithik is actually the last of that breed and even he lost his way post-D2.
So yeah, just my 2 cents. đ
