I am no BO guru, certainly don't know stats like you. But IMO it is significant because famous male South stars known for their acting have not had success in BW. It has been generally home grown BW stars that have ruled the roost and they have been doing so without even giving way to the homegrown younger generation. Then along comes this South film with no star which most people can recognize among a BW audience, it is a dubbed language film and yet people have paid money to see it, in many cases large sums, more than for a normal ticket (I live in USA, so IDK about Indian prices, I just heard tickets were hiked in India too.). They did not pirate at a time when they could have and many BW films are tanking.

BW audiences have long been stereotyped as simple minded. "Dhal Chawal" people who will not like deep stories, women centric stories, they will only pay for a star to make excuses for shoddy film making. But they did go for a movie for a story, a script not a star which is significant in BW. So if a movie is made with a good script and marketed well, it does not need a big star to sell is something BW needs to learn. Hell, the South needs to learn too. And people will come, they will pay if they are willing and not pirate. But the effort should be there like Rajamouli Sir.
