first time approving something in which i have not interest what so ever.boy am i happy today.
I do not know about "Pan India" but many of the Salman hits of especially recently are South remakes, mostly Telugu. Akki too has success with South remakes. Drishyam which was an Ajay starrer and gave him one of his recent BO hits was a Malayalam remake. Also, do not underestimate the South diaspora. The Gulf is chock full of Malayalees, USA has tons of Telugu and Tamil people who will pay (they pay regularly for South play back singer concerts so much so that many of them have a Telugu language and Tamil language concert on two separate days in same city, many of them sold out). These are the people that regularly pay for South movies that presell at higher ticket prices. I would say a large percentage of them hardly watch a BW movie especially pay for one because the South industry movies are enough to satisfy them. Also Hindi is not known by many of them especially older generation and among the youngsters, they know their native language because their parents forced them or they speak it at home and understand some. They certainly are not going to put in effort learning hindi.

I don't have anything against regional cinema
I just don't think it's important
