I don't watch this show very often. Used to love Diya aur Bati but slowly lost interest in the last phase. But I've caught this new show a few times.
Initially I thought Uma Shankar was decent. I mean he's proponent of patriarchal ideals, which I am not, but I felt that's going to be his character growth on the show with the Kanak being more empowered.
But the forced marriage thing? I feel it went too far to really be redeemable. I know the makers are bringing up the fact that Sandhya initially wasn't happy about her marriage to Sooraj as way to mirror the event in the two shows. But Sooraj never forced her into a relationship... if anything attempted to break the relationship for her happiness. He gave her choice.
But how do we redeem Uma Shankar out of all this? I mean even if later he chooses to let Kanak go... and Kanak chooses to stay, its not quite the same. Its almost like Stockholm syndrome.. where the victim falls in love with her captor
The writers could've just let Kanak think the whole thing was a drama... and have her go through with the wedding unknowingly. It would've brought the show to the same point without the ML doing something that is actually criminal.
