CHAPTER 1. THE STAGE IS BEING SET
"So how was the party?", Geet spoke as she stood on the threshold of Dev's room, leaning onto it.
"Huh what?", Dev, who was adjusting his shirt, gave her a glance and then went back to spraying some perfume on himself. Dev didn't notice but Geet was fuming in annoyance. She could not get the girl who danced with Dev the night before out of her mind and while she knew very well that the girl would never be perfect for her Dev and Dev would definitely reject her, that didn't stop her from being jealous of their close dance. I should be the one dancing with Dev, not some spoilt princess! Grrr!
"How was Party?", Geet pouted and even stomped her foot. Dev smiled at her charmingly, "It was great!" "And how about the girl that danced with you? Are you in love with her?", Geet asked innocently. Dev focused on his hair and Geet waited with bated breath for his answer. Hey Babaji! They shouldn't love each other! Please! Please! No! Wait! She can fall for him! But he shouldn't fall for her! Hey Babaji! Please! Just then Dev, who was done with his hair, sighed, "I spoke with her! And I realised that we are not perfect for each other...! It just won't work!" Geet nearly squealed and would have jumped if it hadn't been for the fact that Dev was right in front of her. She made a sad face, "I am sorry Dev!", she grinned eagerly as she said it. She vanished her smile the moment Dev turned towards her, "Chalo Kiddo! I better get going! I have some friends to meet at the Club!" He ruffled her hair as he walked by her and went out of the room. Geet pouted. Why does he always ruffle my hair? Geet didn't realise but she was speaking out loud, "And why does he always call me kid? When will you see me as a grown up, Dev? I am only 7 years younger to you. But now I am eighteen, na? I am an adult! Don't you think it is time you treat me like an adult? See how much I love you!"
Geet sighed as she walked out of the room but stopped abruptly when she saw Daadima standing in front of her. Geet gulped. Daadima seemed to be glaring at her. Geet didn't know what went wrong. In her childhood Daadima loved and adored her and always played with her. But once she grew up, Daadima seemed to be always annoyed with her. Why is she like this now? Daadima's glare intensified and Geet looked down fiddling with her dupatta. Run Geet run! Get out of here! She smiled a little at Daadima and then quietly but swiftly walked away. Once she was away from Daadima, she ran like dogs were chasing her. And hence, she didn't see where she was going and crashed right into someone.
"ARE YOU BLIND? LOOK WHAT YOU HAVE DONE!", a voice roared and Geet froze. Her eyes went wide as she stared at the person in front of her. "Can't you see where you are going? You ruined my coat! Now I will have to go and change again!", Maan Singh Khurana roared at her as he stood in front of her. She looked at his coat and the coffee cup he was holding in his hand. She realised that the coffee had fallen onto him when she crashed into him. She gulped as she looked at his glaring eyes. Geet! Today is definitely your bad day! First Dev calls you Kiddo and then Daadima is annoyed at you and now I crashed into Maan! Hey Babaji! Why are you determined to ruin my day?
"Answer me! Don't you have eyes or brain?", Maan roared and Geet eeped. Since her childhood, Geet had been intimidated by Maan because he rarely smiled and always seemed to glare at her. Suddenly, unable to handle the situation, Geet turned and ran away. She heard Maan calling her name in annoyance, but Geet simply continued to run. She didn't stop till she reached her room in the outhouse and then she locked herself in and slid down to the floor. Hey Babaji! That was one scary moment!
While Geet was running from Maan, Daadima was pacing in her room. All she could remember was Geet's words that she mumbled to herself, "And why does he always call me kid? When will you see me as a grown up Dev? I am only 7 years younger to you. But now I am eighteen, na? I am an adult! Don't you think it is time you treat me like an adult? See how much I love you!" She narrowed her eyes. I can't allow this! I have to do something!
Daadima turned around and ordered one of the servants to send Mr. Handa to her room. Once he arrived, she ordered him to do one thing, "Send Geet away!"
"Madam!", Geet's father was shocked. Daadima, who stood by the window looking outside, didn't even look at him, "She flutters around Dev too much! I don't like it! Send her away!" He opened his mouth to say something but shut up. How can he argue with his boss? Daadima had helped take care of Geet after her mother died. She gave him shelter and made sure Geet studied in best Convent school and then in the top colleges of Dilli. She did so much for him and Geet! How can he argue with her?
"But where will I send her?", Geet's father asked worriedly. Daadima nodded, "Don't worry about that! I will make the arrangements. She will leave for Mumbai tomorrow! She will finish her remaining two years of Bachelors there! I have a friend there who will find Geet a good hostel in Mumbai!" She didn't say anything further.
Mr. Handa nodded his head and walked away. He was getting worried now. How will his daughter live in Mumbai alone? Mumbai is known as a very dangerous place. She won't have him to protect her. And there won't be any Maan Singh Khurana to keep an eye on her. This was a secret kept between and Maan and Geet's father. Years back, Maan had promised that he would keep an eye on Geet while she studied in school and College. That's why when Geet joined first year in her College no one ragged her or no boy proposed her. Everyone knew that doing such thing would invoke the wrath of MSK and no one wanted that. Geet didn't know about this deal as she would have rebelled against such protection. But now who will protect Geet from characterless men in Mumbai?
As Mohinderlaal Handa walked to their quarters worriedly, another thought entered his mind and his eyes widened. Forget Mumbai and being alone! How am I supposed to break this news to Geet? She would be devastated. And he was right! Geet was broken hearted.
"How could you? How could you do this to me? What have I ever done to you?", Geet bawled as she threw herself on her bed and sobbed her heart out. If Mohinder hadn't been this worried about her, he would have rolled his eyes at how dramatic his daughter was being. But Mohinder being Mohinder simply tried to console his daughter.
"What was I supposed to do? When Madamji said...", Mohinder tried to explain but he was cut off.
"I knew it!", Geet got up from the bed and stormed over to where her father was standing, "Of course it was Daadima!" "What do you mean?", her father frowned.
"She wants me away from Dev isn't it?", Geet sobbed. Her father's silence answered her. Geet wiped her tears, "So what does Daadima think? She can send me away from Dev? No! Never!", she bowed her head down, "I will never let this happen! I will die before I am separated from my Dev!"
"Geet!", her father whispered in shock. Suddenly, Geet ran out of the room. A shocked Mohinder remained shell shocked for few minutes before he followed his daughter. But his few seconds of shock cost him as when he reached outside of the house his daughter was nowhere to be seen. Hey Babaji! He prayed. Please keep my Geet safe! Sending his prayers, he started to search for his daughter.
Meanwhile, Geet ran towards the house and stopped when she came across the swimming pool. She looked at it for few seconds and then nodded. Perfect for committing suicide! She looked at the Mansion tearfully. Goodbye Dev! Hope we meet again in next life where I get to be yours and you get to be mine! And at that time I won't let anybody come between us! Tears splashed on her cheeks as she continued to say goodbye, I love you Dev! Never forget it! Now its time for your Geet to leave! Sniff sniff!
Just then Maan came around the house ready to go swimming. He was too stressed and wanted to swim to clear his mind. He saw Geet standing there staring at the pool. Something felt wrong to him at the way she was looking at the pool. But before he could react, suddenly Geet jumped into the pool. His eyes widened in surprise. I didn't know Geet swam! And why did she jump in the pool full clothed? Doesn't she know we are supposed to wear appropriate swimming attire? Then he frowned. Wait! Why wasn't Geet coming out? He became alarmed when time passed and Geet didn't surface.
"GEET!", Maan shouted in worry as he hurled himself into the water. He swam to where he had seen Geet jump and searched for her inside the water. He saw her near the floor and grabbing her he brought her to surface. He swam to the edge and placed Geet on the poolside. He pulled himself out and looked at Geet. She was not moving. He checked her pulse and was relieved to feel her alive but they seemed weak. He grabbed her hands and started to warm them. Then he did the same with the feet. Next he started to pump her stomach and was relieved to see her cough out some water. As she took in a large breath and her eyes fluttered open, his worry gave way to anger, "ARE YOU MAD? When you don't know how to swim then why the hell did you jump in?" He had the bad urge to shake her harshly and he sprang up and walked few steps away to cool himself down. Just then he was grabbed by his hand and turned around. His eyes widened as he saw Geet standing in front of him glaring at him, "Why did you save me? I wanted to die! Why did you let me be alive?" Suddenly she broke down sobbing, "I wanted to die!" Maan simply looked at the girl incredulously, "But why?" In between her sobs, she mumbled out, "Because I don't want to go to Mumbai!" Maan's jaw dropped open. That's it? That's why she is crying? Just then their Butler arrived at the scene and Maan explained what happened. Mr. Handa apologised for Geet's antics and then grabbing her took her away with him. Maan simply stared at the girl in shock. "Silly girl!", he mumbled and walked off.
Next day Geet was packed and ready to go. The night before, her father had given a good tongue lashing to her for trying to commit suicide. Geet had remained defiant through the whole lecture till her father had asked her what would have happened to him after her death. How would he have lived without her! How could she have left him so easily! That had broken her down and she had sobbed her heart in his arms, asking for forgiveness and promising him never to do anything like this again! Her father had forgiven her and they had spent the night discussing about her new life in Mumbai.
As Geet's father loaded her bags into the car, Geet took one last look at the Mansion that was her house for so many years! Her eyes swung from one window to another hoping for one glimpse of Dev. But she knew she won't see Dev. It was early morning and Dev never woke up till noon. She sighed. Just then her eyes fell on the window of the Study room. There stood Maan watching the proceedings below. Geet's face turned red as she remembered how she had tried to commit suicide in front of him! Me and my stupidity! He must think I am so silly! Ha! Let him think whatever he wants! I don't care! Her eyes looked around taking in the house once again and then her eyes fell on Daadima sitting in the lawn looking at them carefully. Must be making sure that I do leave, Geet thought vehemently. But Daadima, if you think you can take my Dev away from me, you have got it all wrong! Even though I am away from Dev, I will always love him! And when I come back, I will make him fall for me! Because we are soul mates, and soul mates cannot be separated. You just wait and watch!
Tossing her hair plait away, Geet turned to the car and got in. As the car drove off, Daadima stared at the moving car. I hope and wish that in these 2 years, Geet forgets Dev! Or else, lives will be ruined!
Yo folks! How was that update? Do let me know!
Next up: We will see two years pass in one update! (He he)
Oh! Geet gets a makeover too! (wink wink)
Thank you, take care and have fun,
