As the farmers gather and celebrate the flourishing of prosperity, we, The Crazy Creatives, would like to wish Vaisakhi Mubarak to all the I-F members!
Also termed as Baisakhi, it is celebrated as the Sikh New Year on April 13th or 14th. This day occurs during Baisakh, the initial month of the Bikram Sambat Hindu calendar.
Guru Gobind Singh, who was the tenth guru, in 1699, established the foundation of Khalsa Panth. In Anandpur Sahib, he questioned any Sikh to become a martyr for the sake of their beliefs. Ironically, the five volunteers were transformed into Panj Piare or "Beloved Five."
Later, they were admitted into the Khalsa and cleansed with the holy water.
The Khalsa constitutes of five important Ks that illustrate pureness and bravery for men:
Kesh [No Hair Trimming]
Kangha [Hair Comb]
Katchera [Boxer Shorts]
Kara [Steel Bracelet]
Kirpan [Sword]
On this propitious occasion, the Sikh community celebrates their prosperity of harvest to the fullest; hence, known as Aawat Pauni. While the men engage into Bhangra, a traditional folk dance of India, women engage in Gidda. Special delicacies, such as Kada Prasad, are prepared. Devotees visit nearby Gurdwaras as many Sikhs desire to be baptized on this day. An important ceremony, Nagar Kirtan, is initiated by the "Panj Piaras" in a traditional manner in the small towns. Various traditional prayers are chanted from the spiritual text of Guru Granth Sahib.
The Sikh Communities outside of India also celebrate this occasion with complete zest, such as in Pakistan, Malaysia, Afghanistan, Africa, USA, UK, and Canada.
