Deepika Padukone

Mumbai: There've been numerous stories of how the Bollywood divas go under the knife to enhance their beauty or go those extra miles of skin lightening treatment to achieve the radiant glow they aspire of.

It's been a while now that the dimpled diva Deepika Padukone has a rumour attached to her that she's undergone a skin lightening treatment to reduce melanin production, which in turn has given her the sparkling fairer skin.

Recently at one of the popular talk shows, when she was questioned about the most bizarre thing that she's ever heard about herself, she got the above said topic in light and thus pushing these rumours to rest. "I heard a really bizarre one recently which was about...apparently I've done some surgery to look fair. Who does that guys?" the actress said on Rajeev Masand's show.

Well, she cleared the air once and for all.

The beautiful actress got a midas touched upon her, as 2017 bought in her Hollywood debut 'xXx: The Return of Xander Cage'. She proudly promoted the movie all around, especially in India. She's now a well-known name all across Bollywood and Hollywood.

Talking about her Bollywood projects, she's currently shooting for filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus 'Padmavati' opposite Shahid Kapoor and rumoured beau Ranveer Singh. The film is slated to have a November 17, 2017 realease.

'Dark is Beautiful' asks Deepika Padukone to accept her skin tone

Campaign is led by actress Nandita Das

'Dark is Beautiful' campaign has called out Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone to embrace her skin colour. (Sanskriti Media and Entertainemnt)

Dark spells doom for girls hoping to meet soulmates on match-making sites.

In a society obsessed with 'white skin', especially in the Sub-continent, of which UAE expatriates from Pakistan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, form the majority, fairness is still the benchmark for beauty.

This dark obsession with a fair complexion has given rise to the 'Dark is Beautiful' campaign in India, of which actress Nandita Das, is the face.

'Dark is Beautiful' campaign seeks to draw attention to the unjust effects of skin colour bias and also celebrates the beauty and diversity of all skin tones.

Now the campaign has called out Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone to embrace her skin colour.

In a Facebook post, the campaign questioned the industry-need for fair skin through two different skin tones used on the actress' picture.

The post read, "We could not help but notice this glaring change over the years in Deepika Padukone's skin tone. While we applaud Deepika Padukone for lending her support to 'More than sad' a mental health awareness initiative, we would love her to be comfortable in her own skin!"

Deepika's foundation 'Live Love Laugh Foundation' recently started a campaign called 'You Are Not Alone' to help high school students and teachers to deal with stress, anxiety and depression.

The Dark is Beautiful campaign pointed this out while saying, "At a recent DISB college campaign, a well-renowned film actor/director said 'It's the viewers who want fair skinned women on the silver screen. We are just giving them what they want.'

Padukone, along with being a successful Bollywood actress, is also brand ambassador of products including fairness cream Neutrogena.

Fairness battle

Nandita earlier spoke to AFP and said, "Magazines, TV, cinema -- everywhere being fair is synonymous with being beautiful."

Described as having 'dusky' skin as opposed to a fair complexion, the actress is well used to Indian preoccupations with colour, and not just in the film industry, where she has refused requests to lighten her skin for roles.

"How can you be so confident despite being so dark?" is a question regularly asked of Das, who has preferred to star in unconventional, issue-based films but says she would struggle to get ahead in mainstream Bollywood movies.

Das found her own photograph had been lightened by a newspaper even for a feature on the campaign. When looking for a nanny, she was told one candidate was 'good, but quite dark'.

Amid such pressures to be pale, India's whitening cream market swelled from $397 million in 2008 to $638 million over four years, according to market researchers at Euromonitor International.

Skin-lightening products accounted for 84 percent of the country's facial moisturiser market last year, their report shows.

A commercial for an 'intimate wash' to whiten vaginas emerged, showing a young Indian woman who uses the product to successfully regain her boyfriend's attention.

The advert was widely panned, but a glance through matrimonial websites and newspaper columns suggests that fair skin, at least on a woman's face, remains key to attaining an Indian husband.

Aspiring grooms often state in their adverts their preference for a fair bride, while nearly all women's profiles describe their complexion as fair or so-called 'wheatish'.

Ekta Ghosh, a fashion designer in Mumbai who specialises in wedding wear, said the message that only fair is beautiful had been passed down to Indian girls for generations.

India's mass market whitening pioneer was Fair & Lovely', launched in 1975 by Hindustan Unilever and now selling in a range of other countries where pale skin is desirable, across Africa and the Middle East as well as Asia.

Indian consumer group Emami later came up with Fair and Teen' for girls and Fair and Handsome' for men.

Promoted by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, the latest advert shows him tossing a tube of the cream from the red carpet to a young male fan.

While men's fairness products are gaining ground, the actress says women and girls still face far more pressure over their skin tone, which she puts down to a general lack of respect and inequality.

Das says, "Until we let women have the same space as men and treat them as human beings, all this will carry on."

I think it's mostly make-up, lighting.
I don't think she underwent a skin-lightening treatment.. However, she may be using some skin treatments(H2O treatement, mineral treatment etc etc), or natural or chemical products that might be brightening her skin..

I don't remember the name of the product I used a few years ago but it did lighten my skin color then. Likewise, there are a few natural remedies that lighten skin color or give skin a 'glow' while it may not show any such results in other people.

Also, very importantly, skin is different from person to person. Even if we use natural remedies, there will always be that one person for whom the remedy works like magic, while some people may be allergic to the very same thing. The same could've happened with her... perhaps a natural remedy or a concoction of various natural/chemical products did that skin lightening.😊

where?

Hmm, I think it was a case of a magical permutation and combination of natural/chemical remedy lightening her skin + the costly mineral/natural treatments that the filthy rich can afford + change in make-up(new costlier products in comparison to her makeup kit in the beginning) 😆

It doesn't happen to all people, like I said, there's always that one person for whom some trivial remedy/product works like magic. It just happens like miracle :D
But, I guess, who knows :)

I don't think, skin lightening treatment is essential for actresses to look fair. I have read in some magazines, which describe Rekha as black beauty. But I have never seen her dark. They probably can manage with make up. I think, same thing with Aishwarya. She is at least few shades darker than what she appears. But these people maintain consistency.

Confusion comes only when they are inconsistent. Like Kajol. In one event she dresses up well, another event she goes care free. That is when people speak more. Deepika's case is similar. For SLB's movie, she went for lighter shade. Now she is back to herself.

When Rekha first entered the industry, she was darker than she is today. She groomed herself magnificently. A true ugly-duckling to swan type of story (although she wasn't ugly per se, just by bwood standards).

Aishwariya, on the other hand, I've heard is lighter than she appears.

And Kajol has most definitely, like almost confirmed had skin lightening treatments LOL. There's like no question about it. It's not an issue of light or anything. you can look at her younger pics (20s) vs today and there's a SIGNIFICANT change.

In DP's case. I'm fairly certain she's had skin lightening injections or some sort of treatment. Perhaps not surgery or whatever, but something. The effect isn't permanent, like you said. But she's deff had it. There was even a blind about SLB urging DP to go lighter for BM (b/c Mastani was said to be super fair) and DP doing it.

Most bwood actresses have use some form of skin lightening. It's inevitable. But yes, I believe you may be right, it's not necessary to get skin lightening treatment to look fairer. Sometimes good grooming can do the job. But more often than not, they do. It's just something the industry demanded (and still kinda does, although things have been changing).

Of course she has had skin lightening treatment..is it even a question..? And I think no one can ask anyone to embrace their hair colour eye colour skin colour..it is a matter of choice like what style of clothes one wears or what food one eats as long as it's not harmful to oneself or others.

If it's mostly make up & lighting can you explain how does her skin tone changes in Piku?
In initial scenes she has darker, her original skin tone...but then it suddenly changes, she becomes fairer in later scene.

Brightening is not equal to making your skin tone 10 times fairer. It's called lightening.

I don't remember the name of the product I used a few years ago but it did lighten my skin color then. Likewise, there are a few natural remedies that lighten skin color or give skin a 'glow' while it may not show any such results in other people.

Natural remedies takes time and is quite a tedious job. You cannot achieve it overnight. It takes days, months and regular application. You think she has time to do it. Even natural remedies cannot make you 10 time lighter.

Also, very importantly, skin is different from person to person. Even if we use natural remedies, there will always be that one person for whom the remedy works like magic, while some people may be allergic to the very same thing. Bottomline she did skin lightening treatment.😆

Please make topics on all plastic surgeries of others as well 😳
I don't know if she has done skin lightening but when you travel by public transport in hot sun during college and struggling days you are bound to get darker and tanned. Now she has a life full of luxuries, AC cars absolutely no tanning and so she is regaining her original color. When they gain shoot under scorching sun she gets tanned.
See her childhood pictures.

@Stella

^^ why is my post dissected word for word?
First off, my vocab is bad! brightening, lightening, whatever.. as if I am her spokesperson, we have people here dissecting my post word for word.

And secondly, whatever I have written about is a possibility, rather than crossing her skin lightening journey entirely for (medical) skin treatment I have offered my opinions that skin lightening is not necessarily attained through medical skin treatment! I was giving this issue a benefit of doubt.

And thirdly, whatever I have written is my personal opinion formed in my life, if you haven't seen it, I don't care but please have some respect to common people who have their own opinions, not like I am spreading misinformation here! I have had personal experience of skin lightening by some natural remedies, health, lifestyle changes and a body wash, which one of those - IDK for sure, as for the remedies and body wash that I used, it hasn't worked for any, but it apparently did for me!

As I said, everyone's skin or body is not the same, and no remedy works in a linear or absolute way - it is a mix of factors that I cannot put out definitely - could be any of the combinations of = food + chemical + natural remedies + make-up!

And yes, I do think she has the time in the world, it is my 'assumption' that as a person in showbiz, they DO invest lot of time and money on physical appearances. Maybe tedious for you, so it is tedious for everyone eh? DP is in showbiz they spend a lot on physical appearance.

Her skin 'lightening' has been gradual and not sudden as far as I can see and remember.

And, skin color does alter depending on your health, and physical activity, lifestyle. It is dependant a number of factors that may not be the same for everyone! I myself I have become a few shades lighter, not that I tried to, but it happened by chance with changing lifestyle, health, physical activity, 'skin care' remedies. I am not like how I was 4 years ago.
