RD Burman said that he didn't care for Rafi's voice?

Just reading this article in which the writer states that when he met RD Burman, he told him that he didn't care for Mohammed Rafi. The article (and the series that Rediff did on Rafi) also suggest that this was one of the reasons that Rafi was sidelined in the 70s and Kishore Kumar ruled that decade.
The articles also discuss how Talat Mahmood and Mukesh didn't get as much as work as the music directors wanted to give them, because the actors in the films insisted on having Rafi as their playback singer in the late 50s/60s.

"I recall Pancham, in his Santa Cruz music room, pointedly telling me that he never really cared for Rafi. So did Anil Biswas and C Ramchandra, at times even Salil Chowdhury, not vibe with Rafi. Still these master composers were 'the Rafi exceptions'.

Such was this tenor's Lata-matching dominance, through 1959 to 1969, that even Kishore-rediscoverer S D Burman firmly pitched for Rafi --- on Dev Anand, if you please --- with the 1958 Kala Pani classic, Hum Bekhudi Mein (set in Chhayanat)."

Yeah, especially because it was RD Burman who was instrumental in Rafi making a comeback of sorts with Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahin, which was Rafi's last major hit album I think.

Naushad's counter to that -- "Never ever forget that you are Mohammed Rafi, a performer whose seasoning, by now, far exceeds that of any male singer in the industry. Always remember, Rafi that the singer you identify as your rival, now, has no classical background at all. So how possibly could he be competition to you, Rafi? Go back, confident like before, to the recording room. Just sing like my Rafi always did."

@red-I saw an interview of a singer(forgot her name) who used to be at par with Lata M but faded away like many others...she said that log bolte hain kishore kumar ka koi classical background nahi thha..arre bengali bachchon ko classical music ghutti ke saath pilaaya jaata hain👏I wanted to hug her for saying this..I mean look at kishore da's voice quality-he sang bachna ae haseeno and mere naina saawan bhaado with the same impact..baat karte hain(no offense)

Rafi saab was unmatched no doubt but was always naushad's favorite..if SDB/RDB 'favored' kishore da,why the hungama?they both gave equally great songs to Rafi saab too.Didn't he win National award for 'kya hua tera vaada'??👏

@drift-haven't read both articles..will post once done..thanks for all these awesome topics..

Glad you like the topics. 😃
Have posted a few more other links from the series in my previous post. 😊

The singer who sounded like Lata- Do you mean Suman Kalyanpur? I thought Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyaar Ke Charche was a Lata song for the longest time. They sound unbelievably similar. 😲

The only problem that I have with articles that are written as a tribute to well-known artists is that sometimes the journalists/authors put down competitors just to make the artist in question look better.
