He was into advertising and marketing though his dream was to become an actor. Debuting in Dil Kya Chahta Hai, he started his career on television just three years ago. But he is happy that he has played key characters in some of the hit shows like Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, Left Right Left and Four. "From a mama's boy to a well-behaved son and a confused and insecure youngster to a patriotic soldier I have played different and varied roles," says Sameer Sharma who is playing a Punjabi hockey coach in the new afternoon daily Veeranwali which will hit 9X's airwaves tomorrow.

While the daily revolves around the strong bond and relationship between a sister and her two brothers, Sameer plays the main protagonist Simmi's love interest Parmeet in the show. "He is a hockey coach for school kids. He falls in love with Simmi who is overprotected and is not allowed by her brothers to talk to boys. In fact, she even warns Parmeet that her brothers would not tolerate anybody falling in love with her. But he doesn't care. Though Parmeet is an absolute charmer he is also an aggressive guy and will fight any battle that keeps him away from his love," he says.

There is no particular reason why Parmeet is edgy and temperamental. "He is like any other typical small town tit-for-tat guy who is straightforward and no-nonsense and safeguards his ego and love interests very dearly," says Sameer who has also lived most of his life in the small towns of northern India. "My father had a transferable job and with every transfer we moved from one town to another. That is why I can identify with the character very well," he adds. Hockey doesn't play any major part in the story and is just a backdrop for Parmeet's character. "The strong point of the show is the drama built around an aggressive brother, overprotected sister and an equally aggressive lover. I think the combination is perfect for all the drama, action and emotions," he feels.

Sameer was impressed with the dramatic script "It has the feel of a small town and it doesn't have the usual soapy elements," he elaborates, adding, "Usually in soaps most plot points are overstretched and dramatic moments are milked till the last drop. But in Veeranwali everything is real. There is enough drama but no melodrama."

Even in his last show Four which revolved around the life and journey of four friends, Sameer had played a confused, insecure and jealous small town boy. "That was a fantastic experience. Mannu was a very exciting character to play and the journey of four friends from a small town to a big city was quite dramatic and interesting," he says. Sameer also enjoyed doing Kahani that had him playing Kamal's son Krishna. "Dil Kya Chahta Hai was a niche show and I came into mainstream TV with Kahani. The show and the character worked very well for me," says Sameer whose close friends are his co-actors Sameer Soni and Vikram Acharya from his debut show. "I have quite a few good friends in the industry but Sameer and Vikram are my best friends," he adds.

He is happy with the way his career is going. "It's only three years since I have been doing television and things are looking good. Veeranwali is a good show and I hope it does well," he signs off.
