The Price of Pearl

As soon as the sun's first ray was out, Tara left for the forest. She was walking into the woods when she saw an injured bird. She picked up the bird and saw it was bleeding. She cleaned her wound. She held the bird compassionately and caressed it. She noticed that the wounds were healed now and the bird flew away after rubbing her beak against her hand. Tara was astonished by this but without paying attention to it, she continued her journey towards Mrityunjay's house.

Here Mrityunjay was galloping Maria in the way from which Tara usually came. He wanted to share his happiness with her. Soon Tara and Mrityunjay came face to face. He stepped down from Maria. She ran towards him and hugged him tightly. After a satisfying hug, she loosened her arms from around him.

"Mrityunjay I told my mom about us and she wants to meet you," she said.

Mrityunjay kissed on her forehead and held her hands in his and kissed her hand. She then gave him the Pearl which was the reward for bringing Prince Aditya back. As soon as Mrityunjay touched it, there was thunder in the sky as the witch's magic was broken. The spell she had cast to prevent Mrityunjay's entry in the city was broken.

Mrityunjay and Tara were confused with the turn of the weather. Seeing the unusual nature of the weather, Mrityunjay took Tara with him on Maria. When Mrityunjay was ridding Maria, Tara hugged him and rested her head on his broad chest. After ridding for a while, Mrityunjay stopped. Tara was confused as it was not his cottage nor were they out of the forest then why did he stop? She got down and remembered that it's the lake where he took her when she was hurt earlier by Nandini.

"Remember this place Tara?" he asked.

"Yes." She said remembering how worried he was that day.

"Do you remember one day I told you that when the time comes Guruji will tell me about my family?" he asked walking towards the pond.

"Yes I remember. Did he tell you about your family?" she asked holding his hands, while many questions were rising in her mind.

"Yes, he told me yesterday." He said turning to face Tara.

"What!!" She exclaimed in surprise.

"I have a family. I have parents, one brother and one sister." Mrityunjay said. His voice was full of joy and happiness.

Tara's face had a bright smile when she heard this.
"Who are they Mrityunjay? Where do they live?" She asked.

"They live in your city." He said.

"Tell me their names, I want to know who are the lucky parents," she said, eagerly waiting for Mrityunjay's reply.

"King Jayraj and Queen Nirmala are my parents."
Tara was listening silently to what he was saying. Suddenly she remembered the bloodline tree which was healthy indicating the elder Prince to be alive.

He continued, "I am their eldest son. Prince Aditya and Princess Vasundhara are my brother and sister. Tara I have a family." He hugged her.

Tara hugged him back. Then suddenly she took a step back. Mrityunjay was confused.

She bowed and said, "I am happy to know my Prince found his family." There was an uneasiness in her voice.

"Tara I am very happy." He said grabbing her hand, "And on top of that your mom wants to meet me. I will ask her permission to marry you. This is the best day for me." He said.

"There is no need my Prince." She said in a low voice.

A voice in back of her mind was saying, "He is the Prince, not an ordinary person. He will be married to some Princess, not to a lady-in-waiting's girl."

"But he just said he will ask mom for our marriage."

The other voice in her mind said, "He said that because he only knows he is a Prince. Once he returns to the palace he will do what is right for the Kingdom. He will be married to some Princess for some alliance like Prince Aditya was married to Princess Meethi. You are not suitable for Mrityunjay any longer." Tara's head was heavy with these thoughts and her face was growing dull.

Mrityunjay was confused. He took a step towards Tara to hold her in his arms and ask her the reason for her sudden change of mood. Seeing Mrityunjay coming towards her, Tara took a step back and turned her face away from him as she was unable to hold the pain of separation in her. He came to her and held her from behind.

"What happened Tara?" He asked.

Tara didn't reply and tried to free herself from his strong arms but was unable to do so. She had a lump in her throat, and a tear escaped from her eye. Mrityunjay felt something was wrong as Tara was never a person who remains quiet. He turned her towards him and was surprised to see her teary.

"What happened Tara? What is bothering you? Is everyone alright in my family?" He asked cleaning her tears.

"Yes, my Prince. They are alright. Now they will be happy to get their eldest Prince back." She said and took a step away from him.

Mrityunjay was again confused with her behaviour and he asked,
"What is wrong with you Tara? Why are you walking away from me?"

"Nothing my Prince." she said bowing a little.

"First of all stop calling me Prince. I am Mrityunjay, your Mrityunjay." He said.

"You are the Prince, that's why I am calling you Prince." She said straight to him.

"Tara!!!" He said in a frustrated voice holding her.

"You should not get frustrated by a common citizen's words Prince. As soon as you will return to the palace you will be crowned King. You will get married to a Princess. And it will be your routine to listen to Prince' as it will be commonly used to address you, which will be frustrating at times." said Tara, controlling the tears in her eyes.

"What will happen after I return to the palace is a secondary thing. Whether I be a Prince or a king or a no one, I will marry you and that is for sure." said Mrityunjay, holding Tara by her arms.

"When you are a king or even a prince, your life is not yours. You need to do things which are for the benefit of the kingdom and its people." She said maintaining her composure.

"If that's the thing, I would make sure that this situation never comes. And if it comes, I will think of something for it. But I will not marry anyone else except you, Tara. You are my everything." He said and kissed on her forehead.

"Whatever you say Prince, but you can't change the fact that you are a Prince and I am a lady-in-waiting's daughter." She said looking into his eyes.

"If that's the case then I, Mrityunjay Singh Shekhawat keeping the earth, water, air, sky and this forest as witness, declare Tara Sharma to be mine and I to be hers till eternity."

He kissed on her forehead. Listening to his promise, her hope which was fading away moments ago returned.

Tara too declared herself to be his,
"I, Tara Sharma keeping the earth, water, air, sky and this forest as witness, declare Mrityunjay Singh Shekhawat to be mine and I to be his till eternity."
And kissed him on his lips. Mrityunjay sucked the juice from her lips and released them.

While they were saying the words and exchanging the kisses the whole forest was in unrest. Dusty winds were blowing, there was thunder and trees were making strange sounds. The trees were talking about what happened just now.

They were amazed to witness such an auspicious event which took place for the first time in centuries. An event which was going to change the lives of Mrityunjay and Tara forever.
