I have been wondering this. Suddenly in the last few years we observed Aamir and Salman have had an edge over ShahRukh. Suddenly new comers many of whom are pretty mediocre acting wise are giving blockbusters while films of established actors are struggling. Is it really stardom? Or is it about genres and scripts? Somehow I have a feeling Indians have become very conscious about the flicks they spend a 2000-3000 bucks on (thats the average price you pay if four people watch a movie in a theatre)...Its no longer lets go to watch a movie for sitting in AC or for time pass/romance. With availability of good prints online so quickly this trend has grown. Off late I have seen only two - three genres are in trend in our country -
Films with a patriotic touch/sports (BB, Rustom,Airlift, Sultan,Dangal,Dhoni)
Young romances with complex relationships (All Dharma - Movies - ADHM,K&S etc)
And films which throw light on a taboo (Pink,K&S,DZ,UP)
No other genre seems to be working off late...It's sad the biggies like SRK,HR are not realizing this. While Salman, Aamir and Akshaye have smartly shifted to sport/patriotic genre, the newbies are encashing on romantic flicks. ANd the likes of Ajay,HR and SRK are hanging in the middle. They really need to make good choices.
