From the very beginning of his career, he
has perpetually been compared to veterans
like Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan.
While some ruthless critics went on to say
that he is a mere impersonator who has
made it big in the industry by fluke, the
politer ones called him an observant actor
who has the characteristics of a sponge.
Shah Rukh has always maintained that he
looks up to these stalwarts for inspiration
and its a bit unfair on media's part to
compare him to them. But the comparisons
continued to hound the superstar,
nevertheless.
When the second look of his much-awaited
film, Raees, released last year in December, it
inadvertently invoked a sense of deja vu in
all of us. His blue shirt, sleek beard, devil-
may-care attitude had a Bachchan-esque
aura all around it. And the trailer somehow
seemed to validate all the allegations be it
the in-your-face punchlines, the angry-
young-man kinda arrogance, the item song
Laila-Main-Laila. So was all this intentional ?
Well in a recent interview with Mumbai
Mirror, when confronted about the matter,
SRK said, "Mr Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor and
Shashi Kapoor are actors I watched growing
up. Yesterday, someone said Raees
reminded them of Darr, you're saying he
reminds you of Mr Bachchan, I hope some
role sometimes reminds one of me," he
quipped.
He further pointed out that because the film
is set in the late 80s', it's bound to give
people a deja-vu kinda feeling."It's a world I
left behind when I came to Mumbai, became
a star and my life changed. Going back,
seeing the a bottle of Cantharidine oil and a
Ship match box and listening to songs like
"Kaate Nahin Katate" made me nostalgic
too," he smiles.
