Overwhelmed by the positive response, say Raees makers

The producers and director of Shah Rukh Khan's Raees have released a joint statement saying they are overwhelmed by the positive response to the theatrical trailer of the film.

The statement also clarified that the film is not based on Gujarati gangster Abdul Latif.

Statement issued by SRK, Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani and Rahul Dholakia:

We are overwhelmed with the positive and encouraging response showered on the trailer of Raees' and we certainly hope that the pouring of love shall continue upon the release of the film as well," read a joint statement issued on behalf of Shah Rukh, Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar and director Rahul Dholakia.

In view of certain media reports that claim that the film Raees' is based on a real life story and rumours to that effect being circulated, we take this opportunity to clarify that the story of the film Raees' is a pure work of fiction, Not based on any person; living or dead.

All those making such claims, will realise it themselves, once they see the film. It is an imagined crime thriller set against the backdrop of Gujarat.

Also starring Mahira Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead, Raees releases in theatres on 25 January 2017.

Arey waah original story...kaha se churiye 😆

What a coincidence

Abdul Latif was an underworld figure in Gujarat and an alleged associate of Dawood Ibrahim. He was based in Ahmedabad and was also politically well connected. He used to wait on tables in gambling dens where he started serving liquor as a teenager.[1] He became a small-time bootlegger and eventually monopolised the illegal liquor business in Gujarat. Latif was wanted for over 40 cases of murder and a similar number of kidnappings and was a suspect in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.[2]

He was arrested in 1995 in Delhi and was housed at the Sabarmati jail pending trial. In November 1997, Abdul Latif was shot dead by the police in Ahmedabad while allegedly trying to escape.[3] In 2014, Latif's son, Shaikh Arif Abdul Latif, contested in the election against Shanker Singh Vaghela, who was the Chief Minister when Latif was killed. Latif's other son had contested against Vaghela in 2009.[4]

The upcoming Bollywood film Raees is said to be based on Latif's life.[5][6] But in April 2016, Latif's son Mushtaq Shaikh issued a lawsuit for defamation against the makers of the film, saying that the film misrepresented his father. Shaikh's lawyer said that the 97 cases lodged against Latif were for bootlegging and other serious offences under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA), but at no point did he run a brothel or use women for delivery in his bootlegging operations, as depicted in the film. The lawyer also added that Latif was known for spending money on the poor and downtrodden.[7]
