The film has really low buzz and is releasing in December pre-Christmas, a period where films can do decent business but rarely become huge grossers. Off the top of my head, I can think of two films released in December before Christmas that were huge box office successes: RAB NE BANA DI JODI and THE DIRTY PICTURE, both of which had universal appeal.
KAHAANI 2 is a film that doesn't have universal appeal, which given it's release date, rules out the film becoming a big grosser. Yet, the film has an ace up its sleeve: Director-Actress combo Sujoy Ghosh-Vidya Balan returning with the second part of KAHAANI, which was a huge success when it released back in 2012.
Sujoy Ghosh is not only directing the film again, but just like with the original, he also wrote the story. As mentioned, Vidya Balan is there as the female lead again. Therefore, given these factors, I do feel that the film will find appreciation amongst the multiplex audience again, but not in the huge way that the original film did because of the fact that sequel rarely live upto audience expectations of the original!
Another point to be noted is that at the time of its release, KAHAANI had no competition for 2 weeks until AGENT VINOD released, whereas for KAHAANI 2, there is only one week until BEFIKRE (also targeted at the multiplex audience like KAHAANI 2 and a much bigger film than AGENT VINOD) will release in theatres. Given the fact that I think KAHAANI 2 will have a positive WOM (Word of Mouth) but not as positive as the original, lesser gap between competition, and a worse release date, I feel that KAHAANI 2 will not be able to collect as much as KAHAANI in lifetime collections and will 40+ crores lifetime collections compared to KAHAANI which did approx 55 crores in its lifetime.
Also, it needs to be mentioned that one of the film productions associated with the film is Pen India Ltd. With the exception of the box office success of KAHAANI (2012), they have been associated with a long list of flop films after that, including their last big release SHIVAAY which fell in the Flop/Average category at the box office.
My Box Office Predictions for KAHAANI 2:
Opening Day: 5 crores net
Opening Weekend: 20+ crores net
Lifetime Collections: 40+ crores net
Overall Box Office Verdict: Average
