The Wedding Night ~ Shivika Short Story ~

INDEX:

The mirror has two faces

Shivaay sat at the poolside with his brothers, accepting their loving, teasing comments without any reply back. Rudra and Omkara expressed how happy they were with Annika becoming their bhabhi.

"Bhaiya, I am so happy that the angels were on my side today. This is what the Universe truly wanted.."

"Even I am happy Shivaay. I just realised.. I will have to get used of saying bhabhi now.. Rudra.. You too.."

Shivaay got distracted. Amidst of the giggling and chitchatter of Soumya and Prinku, he could hear her slow footsteps, the jingling sound of her payal. His gaze was fixated on his room.

"Ohhohh.. Bhaya is getting impatient to go to bed. What is this with married men and their new bedtime?"

"What's wrong Shivaay? You usually don't go to bed this early? What happened? Not feeling well?"

OmRu were laughing, assuming Shivaay kept silent because of their comments and him feeling awkward.

Shivaay however, had zoned out some time ago. His sole attention was now on her, and her alone. From his spot, he had a clear view.

Pinky and Jhanvi came by later to make sure OmRu would leave Shivaay alone and everyone could rest.

The girls had accompanied Annika to her room. Her new bedroom.. His room had become theirs. She had entered this room many times before, but never had she felt what she was feeling right now.

All she wanted to do was go home. Be with Sahil. Pick up her life where she had left off. Instead, she was now stuck in this golden jail without bars. This mansion where people would love to spend at least one night, was suffocating her today.

She looked around. The room was decorated beautifully with pink and purple flowers. The bed was decorated in the same style, with flower petals in a heart shape on the bed sheets. She looked away.

"Didi, do you like it? Priyanka and I made the decorations for you and bade bhaiya. I really hope you like it. We changed it last minute because what you had done was for ShiTia." Annika just nodded.

"I am so happy that you are now not only my friend but also my family. No more just Annika but my bhabhi, Mrs. Annika Shivaay Singh Oberoi."

Annika looked up. For the first time she realised that she had a last name now. A family name of her own. Their wedding was a deal for them but a commitment for the family. It's not just two people who got impacted here.

Dadi came by with one of the servants to bring a glass of warm milk. She smiled dearly and blessed Annika and hinted the girls to leave with her so Annika could rest. The girls left giggling.

Annika was alone in the room now. She stood in the middle of the room realising what had happened. What she had reluctantly agreed to. Only time will tell her whether she would regret this or not. She walked towards the mirror, where she stood for a few minutes to stare at herself. Who was this girl? Annika could barely recognise herself. The ever so proud and bubbly person she was merely a few days ago, had left her body, it seemed. She started to remove her jewelry. First some of her bangles, which she could take off. Then she tried to unhook her heavy necklace from behind.

She heard the door open and being locked from the inside. She turned around with a shock! Shivaay had entered, ignoring her so far. He closed all the windows and curtains viewing the pool area. The only window left open was the one allowing the moonlight in. He turned off the main light switch, leaving only the lights at night stands and the mirror on.

As if Annika was not in the room, he started to undress and remove his sherwani and his top outfits. She looked away, feeling shy and extremely awkward. She had never spent the night with a man alone before, set aside witnessing a man undress in front of her. What an ill mannered man he is! She coughed faintly, just to stop him and make him aware of her presence. She looked at him via the mirror. He ignored her and continued to undress himself. He took of his favourite blue watch. He looked at her in the mirror. It was now her turn. She pretended to not see him and started again to unhook her necklace.

The devilish side of Shivaay enjoyed the fact that she felt uncomfortable. He knew she had been watching him. He started to slowly walk up towards her, removing his t-shirt at the same time, which he threw on the floor. As he continued to walk up towards her, closer now, he reached for the strings of his pants.

Annika tried hard to ignore him but failed miserably. Their eyes had met and locked in the mirror. What on earth is he thinking? And why is he coming this way? Is he..? Will he..?' Annika was breathing heavily now. Feeling nervous and restless. She turned around as he was closing in on her. She stepped back slowly.

"Stop! Stop right there!" Shivaay stopped walking. He could see a slight relief on her face as he had stopped his actions. That is not quite what I wanted to see. I want to hurt her as much as she had unknowingly hurt me. Or did she really not know? No.. She must have known. She must have seen I changed my behaviour towards her. From the start she has been on my case. She has not changed one bit!' He resumed walking up to her, forcing her to step back until she had no space anymore.

He looked at her, long and deep into her eyes. His hands reached for her as he moved to lean in. The thought alone of him touching her, made her body tremble. She closed her eyes. She could feel him unhook and remove her heavy necklace and she opened her eyes. Again, a sigh of relief escaped her lips. What was she thinking? Of course, he is not ill mannered. He is educated and brought up in a respectable family.' She felt silly for even thinking he would take advantage of her vulnerability.

As soon as she relaxed he helped her remove her veil which he threw also on the floor, next to his t-shirt. Slowly, he removed her jewelry, letting her hair down. After removing her earrings, he leaned in again but now to steal a kiss from her, spreading his arms and hands against the mirrored wall to imprison her completely. She turned her face away from him as she tried to push him away. "What are you doing? Stop it!" "What's wrong Annika? We are married now, this is our wedding night. What else do you think I am doing? What else would a man and woman, a husband and wife do, all alone in their bedroom? Surely this is nothing new for you? Stop pretending to be all innocent all of a sudden."

Annika could not believe her ears. She pushed him away. How dare he speak to her like that? Accusing her and pointing a finger at her character! Where did all that come from?

"Look Shivaay, we made an agreement. I am keeping my end of the deal. I will stay here with you but if you ever try and come near me again, I swear..."

Shivaay stopped her from speaking further and planted a kiss on her lips. He did not only took her by surprise but he himself was surprised he did that. He looked at her, before he continued, slowly inquiring before his kiss turned more passionate.

Annika did not know what was happening to her. She had warned him not to touch her. But.. She could not push him off of her. In fact, she was enjoying these new sensations deep inside her. Feelings she had not experienced before. She mustered all her strength to push him away but Shivaay would not give up so easily. He lifted her up and put her down gently on the bed, as he laid down next to her.

As she was preparing herself and thinking what the right thing to do was in this case, she had closed her eyes. It felt right but she knew it wasn't. Also, what did he mean with those comments? As she sat up straight to protest, she could see him lying at the other side of the bed, with his back towards her.

He knew too, as much as he wanted to be with her, intimately, possess her even, it was not the right thing to do. It did not fit to his believes and to his character. But the taste of her sweet lips had him desiring for more.

She could hear him say: "Just go to sleep. We will discuss tomorrow what I expect of my wife!" As she opened up her mouth to speak her mind, he said: "Good night Annika!" "I will go sleep in Sahil's room."

"I said good night Annika!"

She laid down her head, thinking what she had gotten herself into. And better yet, how she would get herself out of this mess. Tomorrow then.. All would become more clear. She would also put her foot down!' She had made up her mind and whispered: "Good night.."

Sleepless at the Oberoi's

The night had started early and seemed to last endlessly. Both Shivaay and Annika were wide awake, each at their own side of the bed. Their bed. As Annika realised before, all which was once his, or hers for that matter, had now become theirs. The two of them had become one. At least, in the eyes of their loved ones. If only they would know the truth. In the privacy of this room, there was no space for facade. Only these four walls, the mirror, this bed and the moon witnessed the start of their loveless marital life. Together in solitude. She knew she would not feel lonely as long as Sahil, OmRu, Prinku, Soumya and Dadi would support her. Her well-wishers. But how would she handle these nights? These long nights filled with electrifying tension. This was just the first one which felt intensely awkward!

Annika always knew that love was something which was not meant for her, although she had secretly longed for it. The kind of love great writers had written about and in which one would find peace. A love, in which eyes would connect and the heart would understand, just like that, without any words. A soulmate. Deep inside her heart, she had wished for a dashing, kind hearted man to step into her life and sweep her off her feet.

Especially, on a night like this. Her wedding night.. She had never pictured it like this.. Against, better judgment though. Love was written in the stars only for the lucky few. The rest would have to adjust. Compromise. He was dashing indeed. That was something she could not deny. But he was far from kind hearted. He had fooled her on several occasions. Just when she thought she had seen his soft side, he proved her wrong again, and again. No.. Shivaay Singh Oberoi was a cruel, cold and stone hearted man!

Nevertheless, if love was not an option, she always expected that mutual respect and understanding would be the core foundation of the relationship she would agree to. But what had happened here? Where did things take a turn for the worse?

Annika thought she was well on her way. Finally, she had managed to save up some money. And Dadi even helped her out with the loan for Sahil's tuition. It would take years but she was determined to repay every cent. The house was secure on Sahil's name. Leaving only the adoption as pending. As of now, legally, she had no rights over Sahil as she was not officially considered as his next of kin. Bua however did hold this power over them. Again, she took advantage of her kindness.

For the third time around, all her money went to waste. The money which was required for the adoption. As a single young woman she was allowed to adopt but one of the requirements is a good financial environment. One she was not able to meet at this stage of her life. Bua had been hell-bent to take revenge on Annika for throwing her out of the house. With Annika being preoccupied with the recent events in her life, Bua made sure Annika would not be able to adopt on short notice and stole the money reserved for that purpose. Bua had challenged her openly.

Poor Sahil. He had been crying for such a long time. She knew this, as she had been sitting outside in front of their room, crying too. She had only 48 hours to set things straight again, but how? Luckily, Sahil had lied to Bua that he would sleepover at his friend's place. He knew his Bua would be happy not having to cook for him. Smart boy.. She smiled thinking of him. He was sleeping in Soumya's room. For some strange reason, he got very excited just by hearing he got to sleep in her room.

She had tried to reach Daksh for hours. Their engagement happened so unexpectedly. It would be only fair to him to let him know what major problems she was facing and that it would be best to postpone the wedding. She was not in the state of mind to be even thinking of marriage!

She had not felt this way since that day in the pouring rain. When she had accepted his blank cheque. So powerless, so vulnerable, so empty inside. Annika did not care much for money, she never did, but this time it meant she would lose the most precious and priceless person in the universe. Her Sahil and their bond. Their sibling love transcending a higher connection than one based on blood alone.

Daksh was MIA. He had not returned her calls. She had not seen nor heard from him since yesterday, when she made his bed after sleeping in it with Soumya. The poor girl was haunted by nightmares. Tonight she would sleep in Priyanka's room. She could not help the flashback of what happened yesterday. Shivaay had unleashed his fury on her again. The thought of that sight made her shiver.

In her moments of distress she found herself thinking of, and reaching out to Shivaay. Her rock solid beacon. In the small amount of time she had spent at the Mansion, she had grown used to him. She would even dare to say that she started to like him. To understand and respect him. But she was wrong. She had completely misjudged him.

Annika had to force herself not to contact him. But.. How did he find out? She would not be surprised if he led Bua on to this! Just to spite her! She knew he took great pleasure in humiliating her. Blaming her for everything what went wrong in his life. He doesn't realise it yet, but not marrying Tia is the best thing that could have happened to him! However... Insisting her to take Tia's place instead was perhaps not the best plan...

She sighed deeply.. Still used of her habit to speak to Sahil at night (even if the boy was sound asleep) she mumbled.

"This man! Completely crazy and deranged! He says one thing, then turns around and does something else. Only God knows what he is thinking! And of course, everything is MY fault! He is so ready for the loony bin!"

Before she could realise that she had thought out loud, Shivaay and Annika both turned over, facing each other. Their eyes met once again. Annika bit her tongue. She wanted to turn back around again. But he stopped her by pushing back her shoulder.

"What did you just say?!"

He raised his eyebrow. His voice was low in volume but sounded raw and strict. Threatening almost. The moonlight lit up their faces, revealing and intensifying his eyes to her, up close, which she hardly recognised.

How many shades of blue are there hidden in these magical eyes?'

His eyes seemed to be shooting cold electric fire bulbs at her. For the first time she noticed dark circles under his eyes, as if he had not slept for days.

"Nothing!"

"Annika!? I heard you say something! So tell me right now! What did you just say?! Just.. Say it!"

"No.. I didn't say anything.. I knew you were not normal but I didn't know you also heard voices in your head. You can get treatment for that you know?."

Annika made a hand gesture next to her head. Signaling that Shivaay has mental problems. Psycho!' she thought.

Out of the blue, like a wild cat hunting and attacking his prey, he quickly moved over to her, closely, grabbing her hand, pulling her closer to him. He whispered angrily.

"What do you mean with I am not normal? I AM normal! It's YOU! It's bloody you who is driving me insane!"

"Let go of my hand! I told you not to touch me! Whatever agreement we have, this is not part of it! If you think I will silently let you do whatever you want to do with me, under the false pretenses of marriage, you are blatantly mistaking yourself! If you don't let go now I will scream and let everyone know you are an animal! A monster!"

"A monster??" Shivaay repeated. "Oh no Annika.. Whatever you think of me, I am no monster! And of all people, you should know, marriage is not a requirement to have a good night of.. Fun.. Right? Trust me, whatever I am about to do, you will beg me not to stop!"

Overwhelmed by his words and attitude, she let him push her down onto the pillow, gently. In a faint attempt to push him off he had held her hands, spread, next to her head on the huge pillow. Somehow, Annika could not think straight. She felt her temperature rising. Her heart pounding wildly. They did not break their eye lock all this time. Her breathing became heavier.

"You know you want this.. As much as I want it too.. Just admit it.. Just say it.."

Annika could not utter a word. She wet her dry lips, which she felt trembling. As if this was the sign, an unwritten signal, his face came closer to hers. She held her breath as she could feel his warm breathing in her neck.

Unknowingly, she had invited him to take things forward.
