All other factors considered equal... the difference in opening was because of the controversy

There is no one single reason.

I believe:

Karan Johar - 30%

Ranbir - 20%

Aishwarya - 12.5%

Ranbir-Ash pairing - 10%

Anushka - 7.5%

Fawad - 5%

SRK/Alia cameos - 5%

Pritam's music - 10%

Didn't include controversy because, it only gave the film more publicity but it hurt the film as much as the film gained from it.

I agree, but some of the music's credit I have given to Karan and some to the stars.

Karan knows how to draw good music from a music composer. Pritam is inconsistent - he gave music for Dishoom and other recent films but the songs didn't do that great. Also, the stars because, no matter how good your music is, the video matters too. Hence Pritam on his own gets about 10%, otherwise the opening is 25% due to the superhit songs, out of which 10% is because of Pritam, 10% to Karan and 5% to the stars who performed the songs.

srk kjo 10% as ppl love this team.

5% for fawad anu ash
5% holiday mood..
