CAW! CAW!
Julu woke up with a jerk upon hearing the sound of a crow. Confused, she stared at her surroundings. Instead of her comfortable bed, she was sitting on the ground in the middle of a forest. Is it a dream? she thought. She pinched herself hard, but nothing happened except that she gasped in pain and the crow hopped away. She was indeed in the middle of a forest with apparently no way to get back home.
Suddenly she heard loud swishing noises. She cautiously advanced towards the source. In the clearing beyond the bushes, she saw a young man twirling a long sword above his head, his face screwed in concentration.
She asked him who he was. Confirming her suspicions he replied, "I'm Dharmaaputra Ashoka, the King of this forest!"
Amazed though she was that he understood her language, she asked, "What are you doing?""I will challenge and defeat my brother Sushim, once and for all, in a duel.""Oooh! Isn't he the one who doesn't want you to be the King?" Julu eagerly asked, to confirm what she had seen on the television. Before his brows could knot properly in suspicion, she covered her mouth, "Oh no! You're not supposed to know it now!""And what are you doing here? You are dressed so oddly! My mother never wears her hair like that!"
"Never mind my hair. Why go for duels, when you can take him on far easily? You can also lure him to the kitchen with lovely laddoos, and shower him with flour?"Ashoka looked interested, "But he doesn't like laddoos!""Lure him with something else! Then I'll frighten him with a demon mask!"
Ashoka grinned, "but only if plan B can be the duel. I'm good at it!"
"Shh!" Ashoka warned an overexcited Julu. "I'm going to draw him here. You release the knot as soon as he's under it." Ashoka cautiously eyed the bucket of flour hanging from the ceiling. "Yes." Julu stepped back and tripped over the pot of water kept there.Ashoka glared at her.Ashoka set aside the plate filled with yummy jalebis and took his place beside Julu, his hand on his sword. Julu saw the tall figure of Sushim appear at the doorstep. She released the knot.
With a crash, Julu slid over the spilt water and landed below the bucket of flour which overturned as planned.
She brushed her hair with distaste, thinking of the number of times she'd have to wash it to get rid of this flour!Realising this was planned for him, Sushim roared and drew his sword. Ashoka ran out of the corner, his sword drawn as well. Julu watched in wonder as the two brothers fought skilfully across the flour and water.Sushim looked at her from the corner of his eyes and before she or Asoka could react, he turned and stabbed Julu. She looked at the sword, still held by Sushim and started crying.
"I'm dying! It's my birthday, and I'm dying. Ashoka, do something! What are you staring at me for? Why are you laughing Sushim? You just killed me on my birthday!" she cried.
She was shocked and hurt to see Ashoka walk away smiling. Sushim whistled and drew out the sword before joining Ashoka. "You aren't dying, Drama Queen!" Ashoka said shocking Julu who was feeling her core area where she had been stabbed."Yep! Ashoka and I had planned this beforehand. We've made up, cause it's your birthday. Also, for a bonus, you're not dying. The swords are fake!" Julu looked relieved upon hearing the truth of the swords."Now get some cake for us, we're hungry as a pack of wolves! And by the way,Happy Birthday, Julu!
