9X & Bindaas begin eating into popular channels
Dec 24, 2007 12:06 PM

Newcomers into the Indian TV market - 9X and Bindass have begun eating to the shares of long-running channels like Sony Entertainment Television Asia, Sahara One, MTV and Channel V, according to latest data.

Business Standard is reporting that while 9X, within a month of its launch, has managed to penetrate nearly 30 per cent of the 76 million cable homes, Bindass, the youth channel from UTV, is generating higher ratings than MTV and Channel V, the two established youth-centric television channels.

According to online rating generated by Audience Measurement and Analytics Ltd for the 10th December (Monday)-16th December (Sunday) period for the prime-time television (8pm-11pm), 9X is generating comparatively similar ratings at various time bands as Sony TV, the general entertainment channel (GEC) running for nearly a decade.

Similarly, UTV's Bindass has managed to outdo MTV and Channel V on several of the weekdays at prime time shows. For example, on 14th December (Friday) between 9pm-10pm, Bindass generated a rating of 0.21, which is 10 times the ratings generated by Channel V and MTV.

In the GEC space, 9X generated a rating of 0.41 in the 8:30pm-9pm slot, similar to Sony TV on December 15 (Saturday).

Analysts feel that this is because of a high cable household penetration achieved by 9X within a month of its launch coupled with interesting shows like 'Missing Ustaad' and others.

In the long-term, these new channels (including ZEE Next launched on 17th December) may eat into the ad revenue of the big three GECs — STAR Plus, ZEE TV and Sony TV, says an industry source.

The higher ratings of these newly launched channels will have an adverse impact on channels like Sahara One, STAR Utsav and SAB TV among others in the short run.

Among the big three GECs, Sony TV has been at the third place for a long time both in terms of ratings and channel share, with STAR Plus being the numero uno followed closely by ZEE TV.

Both STAR Plus and ZEE TV generate average television ratings of 3.9-5 during weekdays in the prime time viewing band. While Star Plus on most occasions gets the highest viewership ratings, ZEE TV has started displacing STAR Plus shows on several occasions, says the source.

I don't know where Sony will go next. I think 9X has a bit to go before it will completely take Sony and Sahara over.

Rahman, I am sure you know Sony is changing names to Multi Screen Media. This is almost like starting a new channel but with a "booked" viewership beforehand. So you never know; Sony might be able to recover its lost viewership. Not like 9X will stop me watching AD & other Sony shows... 😊

Hmmmm I don't think it'll help Sony!!! Sony needs interesting shows!!! All Sony shows are really really boring!!! Compared to Star Plus, Star One, Zee Tv and 9X, Sony's image quality is dull!!! On every channel, especially on Star One, new shows are so attractive!!! But whenever a new show starts on Sony, it doesn't have the same magic anymore as it used to have before... Remember, Kaisa Ye Pyar Hai, Ye Meri Life Hai......... Anyways, for me, Sony is the most boring and dullest channel nowadays!!! The only show I watched these months was Jhalak Dikhla Jaa and now, nothing else is left!!! I think they should just close down and start again after 1 year!!!

Rahman. Sony's shows haven't changed in my opinion. Yeh Meri Life Hai was about a girl's dreams. This concept is extremely similar to Salaam Zindagi. Kaisa Yeh Pyaar Hai was a strong love story. This concept is very similar to Kuch Is Tara. Jassi Jaisi Joi Nahin is a story about a different girl, a girl who was different in society. This concept is very similar to Amber Dhara.

As you can see the current shows are not different to the shows that once aired Sony TV. Now if you are saying Sony is "dull" then once again I beg to differ. In the top 100 shows, there are about 32 shows from Zee and 32 shows from Star Plus. This makes a total of 64 shows in the top 100. Another 30 shows are from Sun TV and DD1. The remaining slots are taken by Jhalak (over), Boogie Woogie, & CID. The odd times Woh Mehlon mein rehne wali and Dil mil gaya pop up in the top 100. As you can see the top 100 shows are being consumed by Zee and Star making it v. difficult for Sony to push through. Nevertheless AD is hovering round # 160 which I think is much better then let's say TKTG. Sun TV and DD1 are monopolies and are for a different audience so I am not including them.

What you said above, Rahman, was your opinion, not the facts. I gave the facts above. I had to prove that Sony isn't doing as badly as it once was. There was a time where none of Sony's show made the top 100 except CID.

For those who don't know about the name change here is the article:

SET Renamed Multi-Screen Media; Dressing Up Before A Sale?

By Nikhil Pahwa - Thu 20 Dec 2007 11:21 PM PST

Sony (NYSE: SNE) Entertainment Television (SET) has been renamed Multi Screen Media (MSM), a move which CEO Kunal Dasgupta told IndianTelevison reflects a change in company's strategy. SET intends to invest in mobile, movies, the Internet and Out Of Home (OOH). The Sony board has approved the change of name, and also booked the domain name multiscreenmedia.com.

I think it's significant that "Sony" has been dropped from the name of the company - the company is a fairly significant player in the general entertainment channel space, and the branding has been around Sony; in the recent months, however, there has been news of Private Equity interest in SET from firms like Warburg Pincus, Blackstone and Standard Chartered Private Equity. Currently, Sony owns 61 percent in Multi Screen Media, 8 percent is held by Capital International, Japan, and the rest is held by Indian promoters including actor Jackie Shroff, Shemaroo Films MD Raman Maroo, MobiApps Holding's Jayesh Parekh and World Media group director Sudesh Iyer...It had been rumored that the Indian promoters were looking for an exit. I wonder if the company's just being dressed up for a sale.

I partially agree with you... But when I see Kaisa Ye Pyar Hai and Kuch Iss Tarah, I see a HUGE difference... I'm not being biased... KYPH TRP's were low but I still loved it!!! But Kaisa Ye Pyar Hai was an entertaining drama, there was a magic in it... In Kuchh Iss Tarah, there's something missing... The acting of the actress is pretty bad... And so is the boy's one...
Amber Dhara could have been a rocking serial... But they didn't try to make it special... JJKN was different in its story and Amber Dhara sometimes is like other serials... As for Salaam Zindagi, it has none of the masala elements that YMLH used to have...
Now I agree that Sony can still do well... Shows like Kaajjal in the beginning and Vaidehi were really good!!! Especially Vaidehi was rocking!!! Ek Ladki Anjaani Si was also rocking until Shreya started producing it!!! But overall, people are sick of Sony, after they were cheated with Armaan-Jassi's marriage... And Sony tries to bring new shows, and whenever the TRP's pick up, they once again make it like usual dramas and it once again becomes boring!!! They should simply stick to the original plot!!!!!!😉😉😉
