It's not just about India but about the whole world. Even in India you have cricket. I'm trying to talk about such organised commercial sports and sporting events.

in that case, yes, I very well go with overhyped then

sport is good if you do it actively but watching it and cheering and everywhere the news of it, no thanks.

I don't even go to Facebook or news when any sports event is happening like championships etc and Indians are going really tooo much with their cricket fever, especially on facebook

Does it have any practical utility? Does it help the society, country or human race in any way? Or is it just a way to enhance pride and nothing more?

Its entertainment and like any other entertainment comes handy in enhancing the economy through ad endorsements, sending out social messages..etc...like the stronger faster higher motto of the olympics it is inspiring...to all and one...movies and similar entertainment showing heroism in sports is mostly fake but bolt and phelps ...etc are for real.!!!

This question reminds me of: 'Joh Dikhta Hai, Woh Bikta Hai..'

Hmm, it's a tricky question. I would say both yes and no. Depends on what country, and what sports. I think European Soccer is insanely overhyped. I think Indian Cricket is fairly overhyped. Some of those players are paid ridiculous amounts. I acknowledge the hard work, dedication and training, but I've seen some of those figures in millions of euros per transfer. I mean take a couple of years off the market and you could probably eradicate world wide poverty!

In general, I think I'd rather sports be overhyped than bad movies. I'm yet to see 'bad sports', if you get my gist. Probably except some of the WWE drama and stuff. Sports promotes discipline, and unity and love for your country in so many instances. It talks about fair play and passes on social messages. Plus, it generated quite a powerful income and millions of jobs worldwide. Why not hype about it?
