JALEBI by Jalebi Jane (EPISODE 033)
IF A WOMAN IS UNSURE WHETHER SHE LOVES A MAN she should wait for him to disappoint her. You heard me, Sisters. She should wait for him to disappoint her. Some minor slight. Some small letdown. It's bound to happen. And when it does, she will know whether her heart is truly attached.
When Aman Behl retracted his interest in accompanying her to the matinee, Pari had been crushed. And despite being occupied with serious matters all morning, she had continued to wonder and question. It was only now after receiving his parting look---that look of most tender affection---that her world became restored to its former beauty.
Yes, indeed---this must be asli-wala-pyaar.
But how could Pari's personal joy be complete? It couldn't. It was tempered by the knowledge that the information she had carried back would most certainly crush her beautiful brave friend, Khushi Kumari Gupta.
The photocopy room---the established space for all clandestine discussion at Headquarters---is where the following conversation took place:
Khushi spoke first. Or rather she squeezed first. She clasped Pari to her, tearing up with relief. "I was never so happy to see anyone in my life than when I saw you come through the doors."
Pari sighed, sinking into Khushi's embrace, "Oh, Khushi! I wish I brought better news with me."
Khushi pulled away, alarm etched upon her features.
But before either girl could speak, Khushi's phone rang in her hand. It was Payal. Payal, of course, wasn't aware that Pari was safe. She was calling to say that the agreed half hour had passed; they must now inform the police of Pari's disappearance. She feared something terrible---
Khushi stopped her. There was nothing to fear. Pari was back. Yes, entirely unharmed. And before Payal would insist on speaking to Pari herself, Khushi ended the call with an abrupt, "Let me call you back, Jiji."
Meanwhile Pari had made a bench of available boxes. She made Khushi sit next to her and took her hand. (Khushi's other hand was wrapped within her dupatta and kept out of sight.)
Pari began at the beginning. "As you know, I followed Shyam from Humpty's in a rickshaw---"
"---That's when you called me."
Pari nodded. "He didn't travel far. He stopped near the college. You know, the one on Temple Road. I was just paying the driver when Shyam climbed into a parked vehicle and drove off."
Khushi's eyes widened with surprise.
"Luckily there was traffic so my rickshaw managed to keep up with him. We continued to Khan Market where Shyam parked. I followed him on foot all the way to the CBI building." Here Pari paused, exhaled and said, "Shyam works for the CBI, Khushi."
Khushi's brows drew together. "The Central Bank of India?"
"No, the Central Bureau of Intelligence. Shyam is an Intelligence Officer with the CBI."
Khushi jumped to her feet. "Kya!"
Pari explained that upon entering the building, Shyam stopped to chat with the security guard. She heard their conversation. They were on familiar terms. As though they met every morning. And while chatting, Shyam removed an ID badge from his jacket pocket and clipped it onto his lapel. As though he did that every morning too.
"ID badge," Khushi repeated, in pained wonder.
Pari nodded. "What's more!---the security guard called him Officer Wardhan. Not Jha! I waited for him to enter the lift. Then I approached Reception. I pretended I had an appointment with him and asked where his office was located. The receptionist told me Officer Shyam Wardhan's office was on the third floor. She called him Shyam! And hear this!---I checked the building directory. The third floor houses the offices for the Anti-Corruption Division."
Yes, they do say that truth is often stranger than fiction. And for us it is even more ironic: Shyam was an officer for the Anti-Corruption Division.
Khushi listened in horrified silence. Had all this been less dreadful, Sisters, she would have applauded Pari for her incredible sleuthing skills. But all she could do was repeat to herself: Central Bureau of Investigation. Central Bureau of Investigation.
"Central Bureau of Investigation. That's like the police, isn't it?"
"Worse," Pari said. "They have power to investigate the police."
At those words, Khushi's phone slipped from her fingers, and she sat down at once. It was as though her limbs could no longer support her.
Pari dropped to her side, taking Khushi by the shoulders to focus her upon action. "We must seek advice. Someone who understands such things. Someone who knows this world."
Khushi nodded in agreement. "Yes, we must go to the police."
But that is not what Pari had meant. She cautioned, "If Shyam works for the CBI then the police may doubt our word over his. I think we should first speak with Aman Sir."
At this, Khushi jumped to her feet once more. "Mr Behl will inform Mr Raizada!"
"That is my hope too!" Pari said, not realizing that Khushi did not support this plan. "Mr Raizada will know how to deal with this Wardhan-Whatever."
"No, Pari," Khushi stated, firmly. "Mr Raizada must never know about this. He has always judged me. He believes I'm a gold-digger. And if he discovered that my family had stolen from the Government, he would feel justified in his opinion of me. Besides. I was terribly rude to him when he called this morning. I doubt he will ever speak to me again..." Her voice trailed off recalling that conversation.
Pari, of course, disagreed.
Granted, Mr Raizada was stern but he was not heartless. Pari cited examples---multiple examples---where ASRGroup employees had found themselves in various difficulties and Mr Raizada had assisted them. Often at great personal expense. Mr Raizada was Buaji's only hope. Pari ended with, "Who else in our limited acquaintance has access to those same corridors of power which Shyam belongs to?"
And Khushi knew at some level that Pari was right. She knew that this was not a fight she and Payal could fight alone. This was terribly serious! Shyam was not some rustic con. If Shyam was indeed an officer with the CBI, then he would have covered his tracks. Shyam would know how to make his black-ness appear snow-white. And as Buaji was guilty of the crime, it would be easy to do so.
Khushi was not the most sophisticated of our Heroines, but neither was she naive---she was aware that in a nation where even the most lawful of Buajis could become victims of a corrupt officer---what hope was there for a Buaji who had acted unlawfully?
But would Mr Raizada help her? Or a better question was this: could Khushi bear the idea of being indebted to Mr Raizada?
