Television actress Ankita Bhargava recently shared a deeply unsettling experience involving her elderly parents, revealing how a seemingly routine interaction with two strangers quickly raised serious concerns. Taking to social media, Ankita warned her followers about a possible scam attempt after two men claiming to be “Crime Branch officers” from Gujarat arrived at her parents’ home and allegedly tried to get her father to sign a document he could not understand.
Describing the incident in detail, Ankita revealed that she had reached her parents’ house around lunchtime and was shocked to find “two strangers calmly sitting at our dining table.” The men reportedly told the family they were investigating a former neighbour who had allegedly committed fraud and claimed they only required “a simple statement” from her father confirming that the neighbour no longer lived there.
At first, the interaction did not seem suspicious. Ankita explained that the men appeared “calm, polite, well spoken and confident,” which made them seem believable. She even asked them to show identification cards and was surprised by how casually they cooperated. Recalling that moment, she shared, “They calmly showed them and even said, ‘You can take a photo.’”
The actress pointed out that this is exactly how people lower their guard because most imagine fraudsters to look nervous or suspicious. “Scammers in our heads are supposed to look shady or nervous. These men didn’t,” she wrote.
The real concern began when the men handed over a handwritten statement in Gujarati and asked her father to sign it. Ankita immediately objected because her father does not read Gujarati. When she questioned them, one of the men reportedly responded, “I’ll translate and explain it to him.”
That response instantly triggered alarm bells for Ankita. Recalling her reaction, she wrote, “And suddenly something inside me said: NO. Not panic. Not fear. Just instinct.”
She then began questioning the legitimacy of the process and asked them directly, “If this is an official statement, why is it handwritten?” She further added, “Why is it not in a language he understands?” and “Why are you asking an elderly man to sign based on YOUR verbal translation?”
The actress later admitted that the incident opened her eyes to how vulnerable senior citizens can be in such situations. According to her, manipulation often comes through “authority, politeness and urgency” rather than intimidation. Sharing her father’s reaction after the incident, Ankita revealed he confessed, “Honestly, I probably would have signed it because he sounded genuine.”

And I need every family with elderly parents to read this carefully.I reached my parent’s house around lunch time and found two strangers calmly sitting at our dining table. They introduced themselves as “Crime Branch officers” from Gujarat. They said they were investigating an old neighbour of ours who had allegedly committed fraud and they only needed a simple statement from my father confirming that the neighbour no longer lived there. At first, everything seemed normal. They were calm.?Polite.?Well spoken.?Confident.I even asked for ID cards.?And surprisingly, they calmly showed them and even said, “You can take a photo.”That immediately lowers your guard because scammers in our heads are supposed to look shady or nervous. These men didn’t.Then came the paper.

That statement deeply disturbed her. Ankita explained that she later attempted to get the handwritten note translated but could not fully understand it herself. She also mentioned, “Even ChatGPT couldn't read the handwriting properly. My mother in law couldn't make sense of it either.” Despite this confusion, the men allegedly still expected her elderly father to sign the paper.
Ankita then firmly refused to let the matter continue and clearly told them, “No one signs anything in this house unless we can READ and VERIFY it ourselves.” When the men insisted that Gujarati was necessary because the matter related to Ahmedabad, Ankita pushed back and responded, “Then come back with a proper typed copy. Or go through the building manager or secretary first.”
According to the actress, the two men finally left after that conversation. However, what truly frightened her was how close the situation came to escalating. Reflecting on the timing, she admitted, “If I had arrived 15 minutes later, my father may have signed something he did not understand.”
While Ankita clarified that she cannot confirm whether the men were genuine officers using careless methods or fraudsters pretending to be officials, she stressed that the larger issue remains extremely serious. “NO SENIOR CITIZEN should ever be made to sign documents they cannot personally read and understand,” she wrote.
Using her experience as a warning for others, Ankita urged families to educate elderly parents about such situations. She advised people to “Never sign handwritten papers blindly,” “Never rely only on verbal explanations” and “Never feel pressured by uniforms, IDs or official sounding language.” She also encouraged families to ask for printed documents, involve relatives in verification and confirm details through society offices or local police stations.
Her post comes amid growing reports across India of fraudsters impersonating police officers, Crime Branch officials, CBI personnel and government authorities to manipulate or intimidate people, particularly senior citizens. Ending her emotional note with a powerful reflection, Ankita wrote, “Sometimes, intuition notices danger before logic does. Mine did today.”
