This is not at all how it works. I mean now it started the intercaste marriages nor before it was likebthat only. My Mum and Dad both have same castes, my friend's Mum and Dad both are Jain, aafter and before marriage.

Tiwari is brahmin surname ... we dont marry in same Gotra ... they consider to be brother and sister but same surname marriage is possible if Gotra is different .

Gotra - decedents of seven Rishis ( sages ) follow the gotra (clan) of their ancestor or originator rishi ... like vashista, bharadwaj, gautam ... and we have a constellation knows as Sapatarishi tara mandal (Big dipper or Ursa major ) and its tail points the Dhruva or pole star ,

name of Saptarishi or gotra - Vashista, Visvamitra, Jamadagni, Gautama, Bharadvaja, Gungu, Agastya, Bhrigu and Kayapa.
