@ sharika...i hear you loud and clear!! sometimes i think scarlett's love for herself is perhaps more pardonable. and somehow the question is not about scarlett at all.

i think when a man reaches the despondency that rhett suffers, no amount of growth can alter it. because beyond a point the self preservatory instinct of all animals takes over.

and who knows? is there not even a iota of chance that we may indeed be treated to something new? what if the creatives are genuinely inspired by GWTW? and what if we actually witness epiphany and rejection of that epiphany...

but yes, i am most curious about what switches off? considering the decision to walk away is near-sudden. when a lifetime has gone by trying, when do you decide you won't anymore, even if your efforts finally seem to come of some consequence...

Hard to answer that. I guess one just gets tired of it all. I guess even if your efforts seem to succeed, the motive for the person to finally accept you, turn to you might put you off. If they turn to you because they tried all options and when nothing else worked, then I guess you get put off because you always wished they would at some point recognize your love or affection genuinely for just that and love you for what you are. I hope I am making some sense there.

the fact that rhett loved her beyond all touched me but even more poignant was that he still walked away after giving her all after stripping himself bare,he still managed to walk away.His refusal to be manipulated by his own feelings,his absolute conviction that he had had enough voiced by the parting shot..frankly my dear,i don't give a damn...compelled me to admitt that its survival above all.
We love most of us love because we love to love but the very few blessed with the courage to lay down all barriers and love with no restrictions also posses the pluck to walk away from that love without a backward glance because after all just because we love that person does in no way atone there behaviour. Love,lust,hatred are all feelings pulsating straight to the heart but the tenderills need to be nurtured,the equation needs to be balanced and when that fails to happen we question not the equation but the base.
To walk away proves your love more than staying does because after all to let go is the greatest gift of love,

Given that Ridhima's character was discussed to such an extent... perhaps I was looking for a mention of Rhett Butler and a parallel on him and Armaan and I guess... and I finally could chip in something...given that discussion seems to have steered on that tangent...!

Aarti: Reading your comment, the one word that sprang to mind was "respond"....brings to mind the picture of the barren land, that lay thirsty , pining for the skies to shower down... as it ran dry , pining.. ... and when finally , the skies shower down... the barren land , the dried earth, jus seems to respond no more... for the very spirit of the land has been fed on by the harsh sun , through the years... ... leaving it dry and barren...

A cruel mockery , it seems, as the rain showers down on the barrren land that awaits no more...for despirited and alive... its smiles wry , at the showering sky...

gina, i think sareeta has answered a bit of what i was looking for. it isn't so much to do with the motive. if we are to assume that there are no ulterior motives for the response...while i agree with you that the history behind the epiphany is crucial and the path to realisation is to be taken into consideration.

but i am tempted to go along with sareeta's analogy of a parched desert that is finally rained upon only to find the sand incapable of holding the water in its arid grains (that part i added sareeta, hope you don't mind!). and i think while the heart also similarly, loses the capacity to love and reciprocate with the same fervor, running dry of its emotions, a part of the reason for the volte-face is also because as a person true to yourself and in touch with your innermost feelings, you realise you will never be able to do justice to what is expected of you. you choose not to deceive the other and more importantly yourself in the effort to embrace your shower of rain!!!
