Baatein ye kabhi na tu bhoolna...Koi tere khatir hai jee raha
"Sumo..."
"Hmm..."
"Kuch kehna hai tumse.."
The tone of his voice was indicating fishy news but Sumo decided it was best not to show it right then. Slowly getting out of the embrace, she took his hands in hers and looked up in his eyes expectantly. "Hmm..sun rahi hun.."
"Yeh...(looks at their entwined hand in his lap and takes a deep breath)...kal jo bhi hua, Aditya ne jo bhi kiya...woh meri galti thi Sumo."
"Yeh kya keh rahe ho Shravan?"
"Haan Sumo, saari galti meri thi...woh..Aditya ki bachelor's party mein maine use humare relationship ke baare mein kuch inappropriate baatein kahi, yeh sochkar ki use bhi apne life mein utni hi hairaani ho jitni mujhe ho rahi hai.."
"Kaunsi inappropriate baatein Shravan?"
"Sumo...I can't say it...tum naftrat karne lagogi mujhse...nahi...please"
"Shravan tum KYU nahi samjhte ke tumse kabhi nafrat nahi kar sakti hoon. Kabhi nahi!" she says, placing her hand against his stubbly cheek.
"Par yeh jaane ke baad ke maine Aditya ko humare bare mein kya kuch nahi kaha, tum kya, main khud apne aap se nafrat karne laga hoon!" he couldn't even meet her eyes as he uttered the words.
It freezes her soul, the agony in his voice and it makes a cold shiver run down her spine at what he was implying. But she pushes away those stupid thoughts away just as soon as they come to her mind. "Shravan theek-theek batao, aisa tumne kya keh diya Aditya ko."
And somewhere in the dark crevices on her mind, she prays that he hadn't let her love for him down, that he hadn't insulted their relation beyond repair.
"Maine humari dosti par daag laga diya Sumo" he says in a voice lower than a whisper.
Sumo feels her world stop spinning. Because no matter what happened between them, no matter how much they loathed each other currently, no matter how much they yelled and insulted and annoyed the other, they always, ALWAYS respected the pure relation that was their friendship. And now to hear him say that he had carelessly flung years of their friendship around like dirty laundry burned her heart.
Her hand falls away from his face, eyes void of any emotions. She feels herself getting up from his bed and walking towards the door. The movements however were so mechanical that her mind doesn't even register her own actions.
How could he? she thinks to herself barely hearing him screaming after her...
Shravan's loud wail screaming her name broke something inside her. His voice slashed her mind, ripping it apart into infinite pieces, never to be joined again. There was a ferocious battle between two of her greatest virtues, on one side her love for the broken man who broke her soul and the other with her ego to protect herself from further breaking apart. As much she was tempted to go back in the room and get dissolved in HIS hug, she was disgusted to stay in the same place where he was.
She slowly trudged down the stairs, each step heavier than previous one, crossing the living room, the porch out the main gate to her car. Sliding in to her seat, she couldn't help but go back to THAT day, 11 years back, when she was the culprit and HE was the one who had his soul get ripped apart by her. He was the one that LEFT that day, leaving her screaming on the middle of the driveway, waiting for a chance to express her guilt. And that was the day when they truly lost each other. She never explained, he never listened. But now as she came to think of it, she understood it all. He believed in her, she proved him wrong in his beliefs. 11 years later, the tables turned, turning them away from each other, forever.
"No. This is so not happening again. This cycle has to stop. Today."
She knew exactly what she had to to. They had lot of talking to do. Ten years worth of talking. No, a correction. A lifetime worth of talking.
If shravan felt his guilt earlier he felt the full force of his actions now. It was numbing pain. It ran through his entire being. With every step Sumo took away from his, he felt himself die a bit more. It Was as though someone took his soul and little by little crushed it. Pushkar stood rooted in his place. He couldn't comprehend what just happened. He knew this, his brother looked like his life had been taken out of him.
Shravan crashed on the floor the moment Sumo left his peripheral vision. Blood oozed from his newly wounded knees. He count feel it. He saw blood spurt out but he felt nothing. The pain was now an agonising burn. He had lost it all. He himself was the master of his destruction. And Sumo's too. She held this friendship dear. It was pure. He tainted it. It was over. All over. Those were his last rational thoughts before he slumped onto the floor.
Pushkar rushed to him, tried bringing his brother back to consciousness but you no avail. He rushed Shravan to the nearest hospital. An hour later the doctor informed them that Shravan had suffered a few grave injuries, and lost quite a bit of blood but that wasn't why he was unconscious, he had suffered a major nervous breakdown. Rest and family support would see him through in no time the doctor affirmed. Pushkar however knew that the only person that could heal him was Sumo. He rang her up with the development. She hung up without a word.
Later that night, Shravan gained consciousness and found pushkar sleeping on a chair next to his bed. So he was in a hospital. To Shravan it seemed like he deserved to die but was alive, his torment was to last longer than he thought. Then he thought, he was still being selfish. Still just thinking of himself, when he should have been thinking about sumo. She should never forgive him, true but nor should she hold herself anywhere responsible for any of this. He had hurt her, and no matter what he would do anything in his power to lessen her pain. He had barely taken resolve when the reason for his life walked in.
He was to say something, but he couldn't. She wanted to say something but she couldn't. But then words were never needed between them. She sat by him on the bed. Held his hand reassuringly. He bent down his head in shame. And just like that, He begged for forgiveness and she forgave him, without so much as a syllable being said.
Was it their friendship? Was it their love? What is it.
Then it struck them, there was no need to name what they had. They had something that made life worthwhile. They shared something that made it impossible for them to not forgive each other. Cause truth being told, when one hurt, the other hurt more. And one doesn't hurt oneself so. They may be two individuals to the world, but in their world they were one.
