Speaking as a Jatt myself, I don't expect this film to appeal to the audience in every nook and corner of India. What I mean to say is, the film will find appreciation in North India (particularly amongst kids), but I don't think the film will find much appreciation outside of North India. SINGH IS BLING (another North-based film) released last year also did not do well at the box office.
The buzz for the film doesn't seem huge, especially coming off of the huge Akshay-Hritikh RUSTOM-MOHENJO DARO clash. Having said that, Tiger Shroff has established a fan base with the box office success of both of his film, HEROPANTI and BAAGHI. The buzz to me feels about half of BAAGHI (even the trailer views on Youtube are half that of BAAGHI and the likes are even less than half!) , but there is a partial holiday for Janmashtami on Thursday (opening day) which should boost the opening day collection by around 20% (Indicine has said before that partial holidays give an approximate 20% boost to collections). BAAGHI opened at 11.94 crores on a non-holiday, and if we take half of that we get 5.97 crores (assuming the opening day is half of BAAGHI). Add 20% for the partial holiday factor, and A FLYING JATT should collect around the 7 crore mark. Business will be strongest for the film in North India and mass-dominated/smaller centers such as CI, CP Berar, Bihar, and Rajasthan on its opening day.
KRK recently tweeted about reports suggesting that it's a terrific film that will be a big hit of 2016. Some CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani has also said that the film will create history at the box office and may remind us of film JAI SANTOSHI MAA. Director Remo D'Souza also done well so far at the box office with two of his film (ABCD and ABCD 2) doing well and his directorial debut FALTU did average business, meaning that the has not had an outright flop yet as a director. What eventually does matter is the public opinion after the release of a film. I strongly feel that A FLYING JATT will carry Mixed WOM: again, like I said, the film will find appreciation from the audience in North India (and possibly some of those mass centers I listed above) but will face WOM leaning towards the negative side in a big circuit like Mumbai and some other high-class and South circuits such as Mysore. Being a choreographer himself, Remo D'Souza's two dance films ABCD and ABCD 2 were able to find some appreciation from the audience, but FALTU struggled in the appreciation department and it could be a similar case now with his another non-dance based film A FLYING JATT.
I have read that the film's budget is around 48 crores. Usually a film needs to collect approximately double the budget for the producers to get their share and break even. I don't know the exact details of how much has recovered so far and at what price the film was sold to distrubutors, but from what I have read, the film needs approximately 65 crores to recover its costs. Unfortunately, I think the film will fall a bit short of that mark.
My Box Office Predictions for A FLYING JATT:
Opening Day: 7 crores net
Opening 4-Day Weekend: 30+ crores net
Lifetime Collections: 55 crores net
Overall Box Office Verdict: Below Average
Oh and for those of us that watch WWE, Nathan Jones (remember him?) is also in the film 😆
