I think more than anyone else, this breakup is much needed for Dev.
Love came very easy to him. I mean think of it.
He was not forced to say yes to Natasha, he did it knowingly and was all set to get engaged. On the eve he realizes that he loves someone and just decides to call of the engagement. Least bothering about the Natasha, who he knows very well is in love with him. This goes to show that he did not care for someone else's feelings.
He then goes to Sonakshi and confesses his love. Sonakshi was already in love with him so was just waiting for him, so she said yes. He did not have to woo her, be scared or nervous of confession. Sona on the other hand, felt love, attraction, jealously, loss, pain, everything even before Dev confession his love for her.
For Dev it was easy. He did not have to woo her, fight for her, feel like losing her to someone else, nervousness of confession, trying and failing to confess, nothing at all. It was all too easy for him. Its all hunky dory for him so far. Minor hiccups here and there, but all that was too small. He promised too many things, all too fast without realizing that all those words mean the world to someone else and he has to keep up.
I think with this breakup, Dev will realize how difficult love can be. He will feel the pain and the longing. It is important for him to be away from Sona to feel her value.
