When a person is at their most insecure - it is all about
personal survival. They don't mean to hurt, but they often do.
Shravan's insecurities stem from a critical inner voice that he has internalized based on the negative experiences of his past and has been carrying it like a cruel coach inside his head since then. Ramnath's words, Suman's constant blows and the circumstances are making him perceive things through the filter of his critical inner voice - it is this voice that is challenging his core feelings and taking him far away from his comfort zone by opening up unresolved wounds from his past...
Shravan has gone through the feeling of being abandoned by his mother in the past (as well as Sumo when he needed a friend) and Suman's current distant behavior has sent him back into the emotional state of that terrified child, who needed his mother for survival (and his best friend too)...He's subconsciously equating Suman and Nirmala in order to protect himself from facing that painful occurrence again - (its an adaptive mechanism called transference)
Personal perceptions are subjective and conditional - often dependent of our emotional state - thereby leading to misinterpretation or a missed understanding - that can cause trouble for relationships. That is what Shravan is facing at the moment.
In moments of emotional threat our perceptions narrow to black or white categories. And that is why Shravan ends up throwing absolute allegations on Suman lately. With his mind steeped in fear and anger - it is making it impossible for him to recollect those instances (reassuring one's) that prove that his allegations are wrong - because it would mean letting down his guard.
It is not easy for anyone in this world to override the misinterpretation that are so deeply tied to our threat emotions because that would mean that we are exposing our self to renewed injury.
Awesome post Nith! Loved reading every bit of it :)
