I came across this very nicely written article today... it raised so many questions in my mind and also gave answers to so many questions

Here is the link

Will the real Indian please stand up?

Raja Baradwaj | December 07, 2007 | 18:21 IST

We Indians have a fixation, I would call it a disease. Everything of Indian origin is Indian and likewise everything of Tamil origin is Tamil. Our politicians over a period of time have conveniently fooled us into believing this wrong notion.

I am an Indian (passport holder) and my mother tongue is Tamil; Tamil has been our mother tongue for the last seven generations I am aware of. That should be at least 300 years. But still I don't think the politicians of Tamil Nadu consider me a Tamil; they would take pride in calling me Aryan because I am a (Tamil) Brahmin. But they would consider someone settled in Malaysia some 100 years ago Tamils & Indians, because they speak Tamil.

I am neither arguing on behalf of the Malaysian government nor speaking against the Indian government's concern for the freedom of expression in Malaysia, but I am against terming them Indians.

For, they used to be Indians hundreds of years ago. Now, they are as Malaysian as any ethnic Malay. Anyone who has lived in a country for a period should allow him/her to be assimilated into that culture. If this assimilation doesn't happen, then conflicts happen. The case points for this are Fiji and Sri Lanka. Through this article let me take you through who else is Indian.

Sunita Williams is still Indian. While she was on a personal visit to India, we saw political parties fighting to honour (and to meet) this Indian for having been to space.

Sunita was born in Ohio. She was educated in the United States and she went to the space representing the US space agency NASA. What is Indian in all these? The most Indian aspect is that her father was an Indian. She is Slovenian from her mother's side. Do Slovenians consider her to be a countrywoman? No, they are busy minding the problems they have. If that is the case the natural question that arises is 'Is the Indian government jobless? Are they doing enough to take care of the Indians (citizens)?' I leave the answer for this question to the reader.

We Indians are proud of Bobby Jindal, the governor-elect of Louisiana. What is Indian about him except his ancestry? He calls himself (and insists?on being called) Bobby, although all his legal documents still call him Piyush. To add to the name many more things have changed about him. One only needs to read a recent article by the eminent Shashi Tharoor about Bobby Jindal to understand more about him. We still conduct havans and yagna for Bobby's victory. Why? Because, he is Indian! What an irony! How many of us even cared to pray once for Shashi Tharoor, when he stood for the United Nations secretary general's election? Maybe we forgot to because he is actually Indian.

Those were two examples of us Indians celebrating people of Indian ancestry, there are many more like Anerood Juganath, Basdeo Pandey, Vikash Dhorasoo. Before I close, let us see another example. Did Italy protest when Sonia Gandhi didn't become the Indian prime minister (this is a debatable topic, some would say she refused to become. I wouldn't get into that debate). No, they did get into it or didn't even release a statement on this because they considered it to be India's internal issue. Sonia for them is Indian.

After having said that, the next question would be, do we at all help each other (the fellow Indian in the street)? The answer would be an emphatic no. I have suffered because of my fellow Indians refusing to help.

This was five years ago when I was involved in a bad hit and run accident in Chennai. It was a Sunday evening with only a few shops open in that area. No one even cared to come near me, leave alone helping. I was very thirsty, I had a 100 rupee note in my hand asking a teashop guy to fetch me a bottle of water. His reaction was amazing, one I would never forget in my life. Yes, he hurriedly closed his shop and ran away. So this is what we do to Indians living in India but our heart pains when someone who was Indian about decades back is in trouble. Aren't we hypocrites?

Let's hope and pray that the fight for the freedom of expression by a section of Malaysians prevail.

It is a very well drafted article on who is Indian? However the author misses a point here. He criticises the love showered on the people of indian origin than criticising the attitude of people towards fellow Indians....

I feel very pity only about the last para in the article where he said that the shopkeeper ran away without bothering about him. It reminded me of the recent accident I had when I visited India. A car cam from nowhere and we tried to avoid collision but it brushed my right leg. Our bike was about to skid but my bro balanced it miraculously. If he had not balanced it i would have been a history. But when i was checking out my leg this car driver just came in front said sorry from his seat and speeded away, I could not even take his car number. and no other commuter stopped by. Its a real pity that we dont care about eachother and when the same thing happens to us we may curse others for not helping....

So Is it more important to know who is Indian or is it more important to help a person from a human point of view?

My answer is the second point😊

I think malaysia that people fighting for their rights....but the fact is no matter how much indian flight for justice it will never work in malaysia 😕

In universities indian/chinese have to reach 95 % of mark point but for malays even 35 % mark point still will be given the best course in uni such as law, for housing - for india/chinese pay full amount no discount but for malay discount nearly 25 % and scolarship is other main problem..... 😳 ,Some law should change in malaysia, otherwise its against human rights... 😳

but the problem is not for expat indian or chinese.... the protest is done by so called ethnic indians who are actually malays😳.......

the case is this that this people of indian origin and who are malays have filed case against britain government that they have lost the right to live a better life because of british government who brought this their ancestors to do labour work in malaysia and did not provide for any priviledges when they left malaysia.... its a billion pound or something they have asked as indemnity from british government and the rally was organised in support of this case....

The case is made for racial treatment to the malay hindus because malaysia is basically a muslim country.... and by the way the government has shown that the differential treatment is given by the recent happenings..... but I am so angry with karunanidhi for calling them tamil😡 this guy is going ahead to divide india😡

I agree with you..... Also After thinking on the examples of indians not helping other indian in India, I came to see other reason behind it... Its not the heart of indians but its the fear of administration that sometimes takes over the heart....

Forget someone else helping you, even the family members would fear to get involved in any police case even as a witness.... Even when i said that i should have taken the car's number, he said whats the need to go to police when nothing happened.... So Indians do have heart to help eachother but there can be some external factors that drive them away from helping 😊

Ya i agree with you...😊.Karunanidhi support LTTE also....its very bad.😕

Minority is struggle for equal and democratic rights in malayasia, its inclue hindus/cristains n other religions groups too..........If we check in india...Minority is getting lot of fecilities.........😳In future I think malaya tamil people will support Prepahakaran, the leader of the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam) to get their rights...😳

Exactly, people in India fear police cases. Now the Govt. and NGOs advertising in news papers and channels there will not be any cases against the people who help in an accident case but stil people feared about it. in hospitals also if the person is serious the person who helped have to sign docuents. That make the people opted out ,similar cases are reporting in papers. People now a days less caring]

@ #1 Ejasfan, i agree with you, wherever you reside, if you are Indian in heart, you are Indian. Please don't assess people based on their passport.
