Sonam's Interview with Seventeen India [November 2007]

Sonam Kapoor: She's beautiful, fun and a nerd! Here she sits down to play the number game while letting out a few personal secrets along the way.

We've been hearing her name EVERYWHERE! The new entrant to tinsel town, she's managed to cause quite a stir even before her first movie is out. There are loads of whispers going around. Has she lost a lot of weight? Who are her friends? Is she seeing someone? Any bit of information is welcome, so there's no debate – A star is born.

But apart from being a beautiful young actress, she's also a simple girl with exuberance, charm and a twinkle in her eye. So instead of asking her the same old questions we decided to play a number game from one to seventeen – here are a few things about Sonam, you haven't heard before.

Seventeen: ONE big dream
Sonam: My biggest dream is to open a book club. It's always been my dream, since I was a child. I want to open a book club for everyone who loves books. I think people should encourage reading for children and people my age because I think it's not only educational but also lots of fun. Books can also be a great topic for discussion and makes great dinner conversation. So that's what I want. To open a book club or a small library.

Seventeen: TWO first dates
Sonam: My first date was actually with my first boyfriend from school. He wasn't exactly a boyfriend we just held hands and stuff but my cousin brother Arjun came along on the 'date'. It was on Valentine's Day. We went to McDonalds in Lokhandwala (Mumbai). It had just opened up there. So it was the three of us just sitting there. I got a little teddy bear back. My second date was when I was in Singapore; I went to see a horror film called The Ring. I think the guy purposely took me for a horror movie so I could hold onto him, but I didn't. I don't get scared in a horror movie.😆😆

Seventeen: THREE times you were fired by your mom.
Sonam: Once because I bunked school to play basketball and my principal caught me. I was the only girl among a bunch of guys. I was in eighth standard at that time and my mom fired the hell out of me. The second time I got fired was when I put on lots of weight. My mom said that I wasn't taking care of myself and stuff like that. The third time…well, I get fired all the time by my mum…and dad, although not much by my dad.
Ohh yeah, the last time she fired me was for not washing my hair and going out. She's always after me for personal grooming. It's a pain to wash my hair; takes me an hour, just look how long it is!

Seventeen: The FOUR most important people in your life.
Sonam: I consider my parents a unit – so they're number one. Then my family, which I consider another unit and includes my sister, brother, grandparents, cousins, just everybody. Third are my friends, all of them. Shaila, Sunny, Riddhesh, Kunal, Ranbir. And obviously Sanjay Leela Bhansali, I wouldn't be here without him. So that's the four.

Seventeen: FIVE things you've waited for in your life.
Sonam: I'm waiting for my fourth dog. I hope my mom reads this. I have 3 dogs and she said if I get another one then she'll throw me out of my house. Then I'm waiting for my sister to come back from New York. Every time she leaves I want her to come back. I'm waiting for my movie to release! It's just not releasing! I count the days till it releases. I'm waiting for my grand mom to bake a cake for me. My nani bakes the most amazing cakes. She makes everything – chocolate chip, almond cake, sponge cake, cookies…just everything. And every week I wait for Friday so I can see the new movies that come. I have very simple wants in life – Movies and Food.

Seventeen: SIX birthday cakes you remember.
Sonam: Oh, that's really easy. My first two birthday cakes were Pink Panther because I was obsessed with him! Then, I remember another was a fairy cake during the fancy dress party that I had. I had Cinderella theme party and it was a huge cake. Then, my grand mom bakes the most amazing cakes so she baked cakes for me all the time, so that's four cakes there. Then there's Manju aunty, an aunt of mine and she makes the most amazing cake. Last year on my mom's birthday we had a sugar free diet cake. I thought that was really cool. Another cake that she makes is a caramel cake. It's got like caramel stuff on it. And a chocolate fudge cake. It's really good.

Seventeen: SEVEN favourite movies.
Sonam: Devdas (I love that film), Black, Mr India (my dad's film). I like The Unbearable Lightness of Being. I like all love stories. I like Zeffirelli's Romeo & Juliet, it's amazing. It's a very old version of Romeo & Juliet. Pather Panchali by Satyajit Ray. Then I like Bandhini, it's a beautiful film. and then I like all Raj Kapoor films – that's a unit.

Seventeen: EIGHT things you do before you go to bed.
Sonam: I brush my teeth like any normal person, I brush my hair. (If I don't brush my hair then I wake up with a web.) I apply moisturiser, I drink a bottle of water, I pray and I kiss my parents goodnight. If my dad's not around then I call him up. I speak to my best friend Shaila before I go to sleep. One more thing, I have a shower. I cannot sleep without having a bath.

Seventeen: NINE must haves in your handbag.
Sonam: I always carry a SPF. My cell phone, I cannot do without it. My IPod, I love music. A hairbrush. I have a perfume; I've got the biggest collection of perfumes ever! Right now I'm carrying Silver Rain by La Prairie. I have my Blackberry, because I'm always online. Some blank paper and a pen because I'm always jotting down things. And I have to carry a camera too. I like taking pictures.

Seventeen: TEN guys you think are hot/have a crush on.
Sonam: Salman Khan – he is fantastic. Ranbir Kapoor, he's really hot.😆😆 I like Rahul Gandhi, I think he's cute. Hrithik Roshan. There are so many hot guys, Leonardo DiCaprio (I love him), Johnny Depp, (who's borh on my birthday by the way). Donald Duck, I think he's very sexy and George Clooney too. I used to find Amitabh Bachchan really hot and now I like Abhishek Bachchan. Akshay Kumar, he looks so good in that song Hare Ram Hare Krishna. But Salman Khan comes first. Then I also really like that guy from Prison Break, Wentworth Miller. Oh and Kiefer Sutherland from 24. he's really sexy and Al Pacino too! (Think we just about lost track of count!)

Seventeen: ELEVEN of your favourite songs
Sonam: Jab Koyi Baat Bigad Jaye, Raat Kali Ek Khwaab Mein aaye. Then there's my old time favourite Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Don't Cry For Me Argentina. I think it's a beautiful song. Strangers In The Night. I like Choli Ke Peeche, Aaj Mein Upar Aasmaan Neeche from the movie Khamoshi. Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil Mein and Ek Ladki Ko Dekha. All of Rahman's music and oh, I forgot Red Hot Chilli Peppers! They're my favourite band!

Seventeen: TWELVE things you love about your dad.
Sonam: I love my dad! I love the fact that he's excited all the time. That he works out and keeps healthy. And I know that he's always going to be healthy, so I'm not going to be scared about that. I love the fact that he's an actor and so he lets us be creative in our house. He's very open-minded. I love the fact that he's my best friend, besides being my dad and I can talk to him about anything under the sun. I love his moustache! I love the fact that he wears drainpipes even though he's got the skinniest legs ever. I like his 'Lakkhan' roles because I think being the 'tapori' suits him. I love the fact that he switches off from work as soon as he comes home. I love the fact that he's a true blue Punjabi at heart and loves to eat chicken. I love the fact that he loves my mom so much and calls her up 20 times a day! I can cry to him about anything and he won't think it's foolish. I love the fact that he doesn't differentiate between Ria, Harsh or me and that he still spoils me to death.

Seventeen: THIRTEEN similarities you have with your mom.
Sonam: My temper, my face cut, my eyes, my hair, my skin, my love for God. We're both really spiritual people. We love reading and painting. We're both idealistic and are always looking at the world through rose-tinted glasses. She's a total family person and so am I. And I think I get my love for clothes and jewellery from my mom. I am obsessed with fashion because my mom is obsessed with fashion. Anything to do with creativity I got from her because even though I'm becoming an actor, my mom is actually the most creative person. She's very house-proud.

Seventeen: What were you like when you were FOURTEEN?
Sonam: I was a tomboy. I was the basketball captain of my school. I grew my hair only after I turned 15. Till then I had a bob-cut! If you'd see the pictures, you'd be scared. I had a uni-brow. It was like one straight line. All my friends were guys. I had two Maharastrian best friends – Reema and Renu and they used to talk in Marathi all the time and I used to try to get it. I was a nerd. I used to read, play sports and paint.

Seventeen: The FIFTEENTH of any month that has been special for you.
Sonam: The 15th of March! The ides of March, it's when Julius Ceaser died. That's the only thing I could think of. I love Shakespeare! In fact even though I like Julius Ceaser, Hamlet is one of my favourite plays. It's a full on Hindi story happening- everybody dies, there's romance and there's murder, and there's just everything. I love Shakespeare, I think he's a Bollywood writer. Full drama and I love drama.

Seventeen: SIXTEEN things in your closer that you love.
Sonam: My favourite is my Agent Provocateur lingerie. It's this red lace thing that I have, it's beautiful. Then my Anuradha Vakil outfits, every piece is a masterpiece. My Diane Von Furstenberg dark glasses, my jeans, my vests and my exercise clothes, my Jimmy Choos, I love boots. I have lots of belts but my favourite is this thick black belt that I got from London, it's my obsession right now. My gold anklet that I always wear, except for when I'm sleeping. All my T shirts, I have the weirdest things written on my tees. I have all the Disney t shirts – Superman, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck.
Oh, I'm obsessed with make-up. I have two big cases of make-up. I have every colour, every foundation, every skin product, and I don't use any of it, mostly because I don't know how. I have a lot of fun hair-things. I have loads of dresses. My most precious possession right now is a Chanel bag that my best friend gave me. It's a beautiful black Chanel bag with gold chains and I also have a really nice Jimmy Choo bag.

Seventeen: What would you say to a SEVENTEEN reader?
Sonam: My advice to a Seventeen reader is study very hard, because I feel education is the most important thing. I'm still doing my B.A. (Beachelor of Arts) through correspondence and I really would like to stress on the importance of reading books. I think girls should have fun, play lots of sports and read books. Sports, books and friends is all you need. I've also learned after starting to work that your mom is always right – so listen to her!
