I knew about Mary Com, Milkha Singh and Azharuddin before there were movies made on them. I don't need Bollywood movies to get to know about famous athletes or sportspeople. Also, rarely Bollywood makes movies on athletes who aren't famous enough or don't have any controversies that can make the movie work.

Same is the case with historical movies we watch where we may know about the warriors or kings but their story is untold. They do give us a lot of information (if not manipulated) and they do have an influence on the public but Bollywood rarely makes us learn about people whom we don't know at all.

Yes. Any kind of media does influence the public to a certain degree. It is not just related to Bollywood but even Hollywood, Youtube videos, WWE, terrorist propaganda etc.

This is an excellent video on the pathetic state of general sports and athletics in the country! 👏

Public apathy towards all other sports and obsession with cricket and Bollywood definitely contribute to this but main culprits are the disgusting Bureaucracy, the corrupt and arrogant sports officials!

Arrogance is a part of Indian culture!
Anyone with the least bit of power will exploit it to harass, intimidate, bully and persecute common folks, even if they are potential Olympics sports persons. From the lowest clerk and peon to the highest officials, they all love to harass people who come to them with any application or claim.

Corruption plays its ugly part as well, officials pocket the money given by the government instead of giving it to deserving athletes, they pocket the maintenance money hence the pathetic scenario of athletes not making Olympics selection inspite of getting their best timing...due to failure of the electronic board.

Its the fault of Indian media too that it doesnt create more outrage over the athletes losing out Olympics selection because of electrical failure!
Heads dont roll like in other countries, there is no accountability hence the corrupt officials get away without punishment.

But I dont believe Bollywood can make these athletes famous...those Indians who really care abt Indian representation in Olympics will watch it anyway, regardless of which star is promoting it.

And those who dont care abt Olympics or National Pride wont bother to watch or follow it, regardless of which star is promoting it.

Here is another pathetic story of another promising young athlete who was forced to work as a maid to support her training :
From State Champ to domestic help

State champion boxer Rishu Mittal forced to work as maid

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/boxing/State-champion-boxer-Rishu-Mittal-forced-to-work-as-maid/articleshow/46836485.cms

ITHAL (Haryana): A state-level gold medallist boxer, Rishu Mittal, is being forced to work as a domestic help to continue her passion for the sport and to support her schooling.

The class X student toils hard to support herself and her brother.

Her coach Rajinder Singh said on Tuesday that Rishu is a promising talent, but needs support to flourish and prove her mettle on the big stage.

"The girl and her brother hail from a poor family. Rishu washes utensils, cleans the floor, cooks and does other jobs of a domestic help to raise some money," he told reporters.

In between, she struggles to take out time for her daily practice and attend the school as well.
He said that if Rishu gets some support from the government and from others she can have better diet and one day make the country proud like MC Mary Kom.

The coach said Rishu had won a gold medal in a state-level championship last year and also represented Haryana at the national championships in December last year.

Yes, I saw her story on some program on desi channel.
Its GREAT that Haryana Govt finally woke up to her plight and started supporting her.

But there are many more like her, like the Special Olympics winner who is selling golgappas, shown in the Main Topic vdo.

This is where MEDIA shd play its very important part...go on showing these sports persons/athletes, keep on showing stories of their struggle, of their passion for their sport...maybe more of them will get Govt support and fulfil their dreams and make India proud with their achievements.

MEDIA is more important than Bollywood in promoting these athletes and sportsmen!

Patronage should come from society IMO, Government is secondary and Indian society in general don't support arts or sports.
We don't have the sports culture here in India.
