Chapter Eleven

(A)

"Are you sure we are not chasing some wild goose Alee?" Nik asked again earning an annoyed frown from Khushi.

Thinking that it will be safe Nik moved at least five feet away shutting up for good.

Kay was waiting in the parking area; no one knew him in the AR so it was easy for him to stand under the guise that he was waiting for someone from the employees. And also with his goofy look, no one would be suspicious of him.

It was almost five when Kay messaged them that someone is going towards the parking place 11. Khushi smirked towards Nik and in response, he only shrugged.

It was fifteen minutes past the time Kay had messaged and Nik and Khushi both were getting impatient. Aby who had been watching the main office along with Lavanya also hadn't signalled them for anybody coming to that area.

Suddenly both of their phones pinged with the same message "Received something in the phone. Leaving."

Khushi and Nik both looked up, alert. They saw Kay coming out of the parking area fanning his face with his hand and then his left thumb pointed towards to his left.

Both of them saw the guy. A plain-looking man in his average office attire walked out after Kay and then turned towards the sidewalk.

Khushi signalled Kay to take the car and Nik and she followed the man walking behind him but separately from both side.

The guy was walking in leisure until the end of the road. Then he flagged down an auto. Khushi and Nik observed the area. It was little far from AR office and not much people were around let alone AR employees. So in quick strides, they reached the man and before he could step into the auto Nik held his collar and Khushi signalled the auto driver to go.

Though both were wearing formal office wear there was something in their expression that made the auto driver drive away hurriedly.

The man started to scream and tried to shove Nik's hand away. But in no avail. Khushi called Kay to bring the car where they were waiting.

The man shouted, "What the hell? Who are you?"

Nik didn't even bother to answer just held him in a tight grip so that he couldn't slip away.

"Leave me. How dare you? Who are you to misbehave with me? Thief or police. See I have nothing expensive with me and I have done nothing wrong. So leave me. I said just leave me or I will scream for help and the public will beat you to a pulp." The man continued to scream and threat and struggle to free himself.

"Try Mister." Khushi finally spoke in an I-give-a-damn tone.

"Huh," the man was in a loss.

"Try shout, scream, call for help and let's see what happens."

The man looked around and maybe for the first time realised that not much people were around and whoever was crossing them wasn't interested in some kind of street brawl as they looked at it.

That got the man mellowed down a little. He croaked out "Wh... what do you people want from me? I don't even know you?"

"Well, even we don't know you. And that is why we are here to know each other." Nik said casually.

The man stared flabbergastered. "What do you mean?"

"Heard of Ghost Squad?" Khushi asked conversationally.

That got all the colour drained from the man's face before he struggled violently to free himself from Nik's hand. Just then Kay arrived and Khushi and Nik pushed the fellow back seat of their car but before Kay could auto lock the car doors the man jumped out from the other door in lighting speed. And then run like hounds of hell were after him.

"F*ck" Three of them exclaimed almost together before Nik and Khushi jumped out to follow the man. He had run towards the main road where office traffic was at its pick. And if they all sat in the car and tried to catch the man he might run back to his house and drink away in the glory of his safe return when they still would be stuck in the signals.

The man was running like mad. Uncaring of the speeding car or bike or which signal it was. So Nik and Khushi too threw caution to the wind.

They chased him as fast as they could but as soon as they will near, the man would slip away anyhow.

They saw Kay had been successful to bring the car from opposite side so they spread away and run from two different sides. It was Khushi who had reached the guy in the nick of the time to catch his shirt and drag him out of the way of a speeding SUV, which screeched to a stop as soon Khushi pulled the man away and both rolled down on the road.

Nik saw the person driving the SUV and chose to take a different route to reach Kay's car.

Arnav came out of the car heart in his mouth. He had seen the mad chase a little and was astonished to see Khushi running after a man, who looked like running to save his life like a cat runs from a dog. Here it looked like a role reversal, though.

In a moment, he was thinking to stop the car and call her to know the reason behind such madness and in the next moment, the man was in front of his car in a danger of getting rolled over under the tires before Khushi pulled him out of the harm's way.

He came out but didn't see any trace of them. He looked around and his eyes fell on the man trying to get up from the ground, He looked injured but not that badly. His eager and concerned eyes searched for Khushi. He saw her standing up from the ground dusting her formal pants. Her head and one hand were bleeding a little but she looked more concerned to get to the man.

He walked fast to reach her. But suddenly from nowhere a goofy looking guy appeared and held the guy's collar tighter than necessary. He shook Khushi's hand. "Thank you, ma'am. Because of you, we could catch this notorious bag snatcher today. Thanks for your help. Now we shall take care of this fellow." He tactfully made all attempt of the guy, in his hold, to speak stop and gave another vigorous shake to Khushi injured hand to which Arnav almost winced. "Please come to the station and collect your wallet after filing a formal complaint," Khushi agree politely and let the guy drag the man away towards a police jeep that was standing a few metres away. Arnav turned his concerned eyes towards Khushi not noticing that the man was dragged away from the police jeep towards another waiting car little away from the jeep.

Khushi took in the progress from her perpetual view before she concentrated on the man who stood before her looking too concerned and very angry. Now concern part she understood but why the hell he was angry? But before she could find out she felt light in her head. She shouldn't have exhausted herself by running, but it was too late to think of those things as part of her abdomen cramped up and a piercing pain hit her hard.

Her hand reached to touch her stomach but it hung in the middle as her vision swayed in and out of focus and soon she passed out like a log in Arnav's ready hand who was well prepared to see her droopy eyes.

"Khushi" he called but seeing no response he carried her towards his car and drove away.

**

Khushi opened her eyes and the first thing she noticed was the unfamiliar place which neither looked like hospital nor anything less than a private room in some posh hotel. She jerked up and found Lavanya staring at her face with a smile. A smile that mocked.

"What is this place?" Khushi threw the question already gearing up to leave the lavish bed.

"Good evening Khushi. I see you feel alright." Lavanya's smile turned into a scowl.

Startled Khushi looked up and soon sensed Lavanya's foul mood. Sighing she waited for the floodgate to open.

Lavanya was well aware of Khushi's nature. She knew when Khushi would wake up in an unexpected new place she would be worked up as was the norm with her. So as soon she had known Arnav was taking her to Rizada Mansion she had come here without a second delay. She was waiting for the past two hours for Khushi to wake up since the doctor had left dressing her head and hand and injecting her required medicine to gain consciousness.

While coming here she had called Nik and found out about the chase that had occurred which had Khushi passed out and the piece of information had her pissed. Very pissed. Period.

For God sake, she was not supposed to run like a lunatic when the doctors had instructed her in clear words not to exert herself at least a month post her accident and recovery in the hospital before coming in Mumbai. She was actually against her taking up this job if only this girl would have listened.

She had informed the doctor about the accident, who had come for treating her and he had left asking her to bring Khushi in the hospital next day for a thorough check-up to see if anything had gone wrong.

Of course, she had asked the doctor not to tell anything about it to Arnav knowing Khushi wouldn't like it but that doesn't mean she would also keep herself from admonishing her.

"So why did you pull such a stunt when you know you are not supposed to?"

"Because if I wouldn't have then that man may have slipped out of our hands and we cannot afford that." Was Khushi's instant matter of fact answer.

Lavanya sighed knowing there was no point arguing with this girl who gave no importance to her wellbeing and even though she loved her yet not enough to want to live for her. But she couldn't blame Khushi for that. Khushi had been always like that since she had met her and if anyone to blame for her such aloofness and disinterest towards living then it was her fate, which always dished out hardship, cruelty, and selfishness in her plate. Her singular love was not enough to help Khushi to feel and live. For now, she lived for her work and that's not going to change even if her body needed rest.

So choosing not to waste her energy in reprimanding her further she informed,"You were out for two hours. Doctor has checked you and I have told him about the accident a month back and what had been advised to you. He wants you to visit him in hospital tomorrow for a complete check up and you are coming with me." The end of the statement was an order and her eyes challenged Khushi to defy.

Khushi knew when not to dare and only nodded in agreement. She put on her shoes which were kept near the bed enquiring about the place again.

"You passed and there was no hospital or clinic nearby so Arnav brought you here in Raizada Mansion and called the doctor. It is one of the guest rooms of RM. The poor guy is worried sick for you and has already come thrice to check on you." Lavanya informed Khushi. "I should go and tell him that you are up."

She, of course, didn't tell her about the grumbling she had heard whenever he had come. Mumbling something along the line, careless, stupid, overconfident fool. There would be a hell to pay if ever those things fell on Khushi's ear.

Lavanya knew the guy was genuinely worried and maybe disturbed because he didn't know it was natural for Khushi to pull such stunt. The guy cared for her friend to a great extent she could clearly see it. The knowledge was scary but also made her happy for reasons known to her.

As Khushi opened her mouth she added: "He doesn't know anything about what the doctor and I have discussed."

"I was saying we can inform him and thank him, on out way out." Khushi wasn't bothered about Lavanya's added piece of info as she trusted Lavanya to keep her privacy and all she wanted right now was to leave this place since she had heard it belonged to a certain Raizada. The knowledge itself made her uncomfortable.

"Let's leave" She stood up to leave and just then the door of the room burst open revealing a stern-faced Arnav Singh Raizada who asked in a clipped tone "Where?"

**

Little taken aback with the sudden intrusion Khushi's head snapped up to meet a pair of stony eyes. Lavanya to stumbled to a halt.

Arnav asked again, this time, more clearly, "where are you going?"

Finding her composure back Khushi replied calmly "We were coming to you only. I wanted to thank you for your help. Thank you." She expressed her gratitude genuinely.

In response, Arnav said nothing only nodded his head in acknowledgement. Because he would be damned if he confessed before this woman that she didn't need to thank him as he could do anything for her. That seeing her hurt and unconscious had made him panic so much that he couldn't think straight for some time. And then when he could he didn't hesitate to bring her into his house for a single moment as it had felt only natural.

When the doctor had come and asked him to go out he wanted to stay and make sure she was doing well, but he didn't have the right. So he had walked out and La had stayed behind. When the doctor had assured him about her wellbeing he had felt relief flooding in his body. But then when she wasn't up even after two hours he had called the doctor again who had asked him to check on her again and if he finds her still sleeping then let him know or better bring her to the hospital. That got him panicked again and he had come here in full mood to take her to the hospital.

He had reached the door only to hear the last of their conversation where Khushi was talking about leaving and all his worry had changed into anger in an instant.

Gull of that woman? She wants to leave when she was lying dead only a few minutes back. First, she acts like a fool running behind a thief like a superwoman for a wallet putting herself in danger and now when she needed to rest she again needed to act a tough woman.

He then pushed the door with a force he didn't think of applying and came face to face with the audacious woman/girl who had him wrapped around her finger without an iota of knowledge and dares to contradict his feelings even when she doesn't acknowledge her's.

Khushi spoke again to break the awkward silence, "Um... Sorry for the trouble you had to take for me and once again thank you for your timely help. Err.. I should leave now, though. It's quite late."She looked back to a mute La pointedly to follow.

"You can't leave now," Arnav stated plainly.

"Excuse me." There was a tinge of annoyance in Khushi's voice for his bossing tone.

"You have just come out of your stupor and I won't let you go until I am sure you are okay." He told her in clear terms.

"I am okay as you can see," Khushi told him hoping him to not argue but alas! Arnav was not in a mood to agree.

"I don't see so."

"What?" Khushi spat disbelievingly.

"You still look tired and in need of rest." The observation and worry were genuine from him which even she couldn't deny. So she assured, "I will rest once I go back home."

"Then let me drop you." He insisted not so politely.

"No need Sir. Lavanya will drop me." Khushi said now irritated by his dictatorial behaviour not noticing Lavanya had long slipped away from the room unwilling to be a part of their verbal volley.

"She didn't bring her car and I would be damned if I let you drive away in a bike in your state," Arnav said losing his masked cool rapidly.

"Sir, I will be just fine. I don't want to be any more bother to you." Khushi gritted out folding her hands defiantly.

"You are not." Arnav fisted his fingers of both hands to control the uncharacteristic anger raging in him. This woman had the capability of bringing the shades out of him he didn't even know he had in him. "The only thing bothered me today that you were stupid enough to chase a roadside thief and got yourself nearly killed. What would have happened dammit if you would have got hurt severely?"

"That's none of your concern." It came outharsher than she intended.

"That none of my concern," he repeated incredulously.

"Yes. because without professional relation we share nothing which gives you the right to be concerned for me or admonishes for that matter." Khushi argued to stand on her point. She never learned to back off.

Arnav's voice lowered a notch and dangerously so "We share nothing without professional relation, are you sure Khushi?" He asked menacingly.

Any other girl in her place would have been intimidated but Khushi had seen far worse so she challenged "Do we?"

Arnav didn't answer that rather he sneaked an arm around her waist and pulled her closer. Their chests almost touching. He waited for her to react, protest but the sudden action from his end left her a little dazed and taking the opportunity he brought his lips closer and pecked her near her jaw tenderly before moving upwards near her lips and kissing the corner of her mouth. He then dragged his lips near her ear and took her earlobe in between his teeth and nibbled them softly. Lost in the sensual haze Khushi breathed hard and forgot to protest completely. The hair on her neck and hand stood erect as she then heard him whisper in her ear, his lips grazing the sensitive skin of her ear,"This. This is what we share beyond the professional relationship. This attraction for each other Khushi. Deny as much as you want but you too know that we are hopelessly attracted towards each other and I have no qualms accepting the fact. And this gives me the right to care for you. Be concerned for you and tell you when I don't like your action."

Arnav waited as he finished for her to rebel, disagree. He waited but nothing came. She remained as unmovable as she was when he had started to speak.

He leant back a little and with his heart picking up space he peered on her face to check why the spitfire was so silent.

His eyes found hers. She looked contemplating something before she spoke staring right back at him with her focus back on place. "I won't deny Arnav. But I won't accept too. It will make things complicated for you and me. And trust me we don't want that. You don't want that. So we better let this go and stay as we are as boss and his PA" She tried to pry his hand away from her waist but his grip only tightened.

"Again that bloody crap. You want to back off even before trying. Don't tell me that you haven't seen boss and employee relationship in your career so far.And even if you haven't I don't care. When you agree, I agree I see no reason for thigs to be complicated or you are just trying to find excuses to keep me away," Arnav hissed out exasperated, fade up and irked by her continuous rebel against his and her own feelings, her continuous effort to keep him away.

Khushi forcefully came out of his hold before she too said heatedly, "Think what you want I don't care. Don't tell me later I didn't warn you or I trapped you." She took a calming breath before continuing, "I already thanked you for your help today and I better leave now. Please send me the doctor's bill I would like to pay you back. See you in office."

She was about to leave when Arnav grabbed her wrist again making her halt in her track. Her instinct roared to turn and hit him as a possible threat. She balled her hands to stop herself doing anything foolish. This is Arnav, she reminded herself.

"Hell, you will leave leaving this conversation half way. I won't let you go until I get my answer." Arnav told determinedly. If only he knew it was almost impossible to intimidate the woman before him to abide by his rules just with his large and furious stance.

"I am not answerable to you in this matter." She decided it was enough and tried to make a move but Arnav blocked her way. And the volley began again.

"You are when it involves me."

"I already gave you an answer."

"That's not good enough. I don't see any complication if we explore what we have between us until you give me some solid reason to make me believe otherwise."

And Khushi finally lost it, "To hell with you and your answers Arnav. I am not going to stand here and have this tiring roundabout conversation against my will. You didn't leave me on road unconscious and got me here and got me treated, but if you think with such littles favours you can have me under your thumbs then you have another thing coming. Khushi Aleen Grover is not so weak and certainly no one can pressurise her to do something which she does not want . So you better back off." Her eyes spit fire as she finished.

Lapsed into silence by her outburst for a moment Arnav stared at the attractive woman before him, who looked even better in her anger with her flushed skin. Sumptuous! if he could put it that way.

Khushi too breathed tiredly feeling a little bad to shout on her boss in his home only. So when a feminine voice called her name sternly her head snapped to the direction of the entrance of the room and so as Arnav's.

"Khushi.."

Anjali stood there in her elegant appearance looking composed yet grim. She walked in gracefully adjusting the already perfect pallu of her richly embroideried sea green net sari and at the same time rebuking Khushi with polite words that worked like a cold steel knife, "You might want to keep in mind that he is your boss when you talk in such ill-mannered way. And not to mention the person who had helped you when you were lying on road senseless."

"I am sorry Ma'am" Khushi held her tongue in check as she saw Lavanya shook her head behind Anjali, who had also walked in after Anjali.

"I guess you are saying it to the wrong person," Anjali said haughtily.

"I am sorry Arnav" Khushi wanted this ordeal to finish as soon as possible so he obliged instantly but Anjali didn't forget to remind her that what relationship they share as she heard Khushi call Arnav by his name and said deliberately

"Sir."

"Sir," Khushi repeated.

"I should take a leave now. Thank again for your help Sir." Khushi forced the Sir out in such way that expressed her displeasure every person present in the room clearly and she also looked pointedly to a mute Arnav as if to say 'do you get my point'.

But the answer came from Anjali "You are not so welcome" which was meant to insult.

"I understand mam. Bye." Khushi sighed that finally it was over not really caring about the insult that moment.

She left hurriedly with Lavanya, who was fuming behind Anjali. She didn't forget to throw a mean look towards Arnav before she went away from his view.

"Di you didn't have to," Arnav spoke finally. He didn't like how his Di had jumped into the middle of their conversation and judged Khushi hearing just the last bit of the whole argument. He didn't like how she had insulted her and couldn't say anything t stop that.

His Di didn't know what place Khushi hold in his life at the moment. So if he would have cut her in the middle Anjali might have felt insulted before the employees of the company and he wouldn't have heard the end of it let alone talking about Khushi with her. So he had stayed silent biting back the protest that was on the tip of his tongue and waited for Khushi and Lavanya to leave before he spoke.

"She needed to remind whom she was talking to. Such audaciousness." Anjali said sternly as was her nature in this matters.

"It was me who started Di", he explained impatiently.

"Still she was an employee" Anjali argued not a bit deterred in her stance.

"She will become much more than an employee if she agrees to my proposal," words came out much confidently even before he could stop to think twice.

Anjali was so surprised that she couldn't utter than a faint "Arnav" hearing the conviction in his voice.

"That's why I said you shouldn't have jumped in the conversation without knowing the full matter." His dislike showed in his voice.

After a weird silence between the two adults, Arnav shook his head and left the room hurriedly in the hope that they hadn't left the mansion already but Anjali stood there in deep thought even when he was gone.

(Harshbardhan Kashyap pic pg 2 with intro)

"Bhabi ji aapke pitaji aaye hain," HP informed knocking the door.

Lavanya's hand halted in midair. Her grip on the hair brush tightened beyond necessity.

"Hmm. I am coming," she said as neutrally as she could and dispersed the house help.

She threw the brush on the dressing table before getting up and looking at her agitated reflection. Her scowl only deepened as she stared, her mind in a chaos. But she couldn't delay the inevitable more. So turning she stomped her way towards the living room.

She saw his father sitting with Anjali. As she neared she caught bits and pieces of their conversation with accompanying chuckles.

"So you say all is good with our country." Anjali quipped.

"Well, I am only allowed to say so," Mr Kashyap returned.

"Well, I would like to believe so," Anjali delivered spontaneously and both chuckled.

"So how is aunty doing?" Anjali enquired.

"She is good and right now busy with her NGO work." Mr Kashyap informed with a tinge of pride and fondness.

"But not so busy to visit us some time," Anjali complained sweetly.

"No beta. Soon she will come to meet you all. After all, it quite long since she had met Lavanya too." There was wistfulness in Mr Kashyap's voice Anjali noticed.

She knew for some reason Lavanya and her parents' relation were strained since last two years. She didn't visit them other than absolutely necessary. Well, even they were also not in very good terms but her parents need not know that. "Yeah, I know she is also busy with RH's work." So she defended.

"Yeah..." Lavanya's father dragged not believing for a single moment that his daughter didn't visit them for work. She couldn't be busier than him. But he could not and would not discuss that with Anjali and added, "I was passing so thought to meet her but I couldn't reach her mobile to confirm that she is home so I just hoped she would be."

"You did right uncle."

"My phone lost charge,"

came the simultaneous replies.

Anjali and Mr Kashyap both turned to see Lavanya standing behind in her casual shirt and pants. Her hair still wet from the shower and her face was unadorned giving her a soft homely look. Her face looked taut though without an iota of excitement that a daughter should feel after seeing her father after a long period of a gap.

Mr Kashyap's face lit up seeing his daughter and ignoring her stiffness he left his seat to walk up to her. He embraced her kissing her forehead in affection. Lavanya reciprocated the hug but didn't share the same fondness and soon she was out of his arms.

Anjali sensed the tension and decided to give them some time to talk in private. So she left the place in the pretext of checking on evening snacks as it was time for all the male members of the house to be back.

"Come with me," Lavanya asked her father to follow to talk in a more private setting.

"How are you beta," Mr Kashyap asked as soon as they reached the terrace garden between the rooms of the Raizada brothers.

"Why are you here dad?"

Both asked each other almost at the same time.

Hurt by his daughter's rudeness Mr Kashyap looked away but Lavanya gazed at him pointedly.

"If I say to see how are you would you believe me," Mr Kashyap whispered recovering.

"I would, but I also know that won't be your single agenda to take some precious time out of your busy schedule and come here all the way " Came Lavanya's wry reply.

"Right." All Mr Harshbardhan Kashyap managed before he lapsed into a contemplating silence.

Lavanya waited patiently knowing he was here for a reason.

What she had known of her father all her life was that he had been a good father to her but he was a more committed IPS officer throughout his life, who never gave anything more priority than his duty and never indulged in activities that cost him his time to serve his country. So when as the Director of Indian intelligence bureau he was supposed to be in his office working on confidential issues or travelling in cities for meetings he was here to meet her without any prior notice then that meant serious business.

"You know she is alive." She heard him. She closed her eyes berating herself for not guessing it before or she had but didn't want to think that his father would be so selfish to come to her even after their tensed relationship to seek out her help for this.

"I am sorry I had to keep this from you, but she was in coma and we also had to take care of the confidentiality of the matter." He tried to explain even after he knew it wouldn't work, at least not in his favour.

In a flash of a moment, Lavanya was before him shooting daggers through her eyes.

"You are sorry! You are?" She mocked. For what? To take a 15 years old girl, who hadn't thought twice before saving your daughter from getting ruined putting her life in danger , who had not known a life since she was 5, who had put her trust on you to give her better life when she had no other better choice."

"Or are you sorry because you could never be a father to that lost orphan girl even if you promised to be so"

"Or are sorry behalf of my mother who always treated her politely because she saved me but never mustered up enough affection to actually pull her out of her darkness."

"Lavanya there is no point talking about the past. Let's talk about the present situation and find a solution." Mr Kashyap tried to be stern to stop her daughter in her rant. He feared someone would hear them. He feared that she would lose control. He feared that finally his guilt would consume him.

But Lavanya didn't give a damn to his father's protest and continued, "Or are you sorry because you let me live my life because I shared your DNA but took her chance away even before she could have any hope of a normal life and sent her away for those awful training"

"Even then she could have had a dignified life after coming back but you did not let that happen too. Are you sorry for that?" And then suddenly her voice dipped dangerously, "or are you sorry because finally when she had her chance and wanted to embrace her life, you snatched that away too. You first sent her to die that day even when we were against your decision and then declared her dead when she was still alive and ultimately succeeded in completely destroying her life."

"Lavanya," his father whispered hoarsely to make her stop.

"So tell me, dad, for what are you exactly sorry?" Lavanya mocked again.

"Lavanya you can accuse me all you want and I admit I am guilty as charged except one," Mr Kashyap's voice gained the lost power and Lavanya's head turned in his direction, "I chose her not you not because I am selfish as you put it, but I knew she had the potential to achieve what was chosen for her. On the other hand, you were never made for such work so I let you work in the background never on the field."

"Yeah, she had the potential of being heartless because you never let that organ act any differently when you had the chance."

Lavanya's cutting words made the desired impact and Mr Kashyap looked away to hide his tortured expression.

Lavanya smiled humourlessly.

After an eery pause, Mr Kashyap cleared his throat to speak "When she had come out of her comatose state I had explained to her why we took the decision and also told her if she wants she can leave us and live her life...

"Away from us, away from Arnav. Alone." Lavanya completed what Mr Kashyap wanted to put in better words. At least he thought he could.

"That's the price she needs to pay for the life she wants." Mr Kashyap said defiantly.

Suddenly Lavanya burst into a mirthless laugh. She laughed till her eyes flooded and belly hurt,

"Stop it Lavanya. Don't pretend that I did it intentionally to her. She chose to serve us and she vowed to secrecy willingly. Nobody forced her. And then she had to go and put our mission in trouble for her personal issues. Now when she is facing consequences she blames us, and you too." He said agitatedly not liking his daughters loathing for him.

And Lavanya lost it completely, She clapped as she said, "Wow Dad wow."

"She chose to serve You because you wanted her to. Because she was indebted to you. She went willingly because she did not care if she lived or died because you gave her no reason to care. She was not needed to force because she had nothing to hold back other than me. But she knew Mom didn't like her around me. You did not take her out of the mission even when she wanted to leave because you knew she was one of the best and you chose to keep her even it was at the cost of destroying her. She is facing the consequences of your selfish deed dad, yours not her's. I wonder how are you different than those terrorists who used children same as you for their benefit training them to be human weapon." she spat on his face

"Lavanya," her father growled not liking the way she accused him again and again. But Lavanya cared less. She was way past caring as she recalled the injustice towards a helpless orphan child.

"I have not come all the way to hear your accusation." Mr Kashyap said angrily, "it was her who chose to work with us again but now I understand that she came back with her own set of agenda. She is again putting our team and our mission in danger for her own personal gain and I will not sit and watch her destroy everything we have put so much effort in building. So before we stop her our way ask her to back off."

"what made you think she would listen to me," Lavanya asked. One of her eyebrows went up as she asked.

"I know so." His father answered confidently.

"She won't," Lavanya said calmly.

"What?" It was hard for Mr Kashyap to believe that Khushi would not oblige Lavanya willingly.

"Because I won't ask her to stop. And you can't do a thing to her because I won't let you. Because I would blow all your hard work by putting it before all and sundry even if you try to touch her single hair. You have played enough with her life, no more." She threatened the DIB fearlessly because she was happened to be his daughter also and part of his odd team.

Mr Kashyap stared in disbelief but said nothing other than a single 'Lavanya'.

"You lost me, dad. You lost me that day when you selfishly took her away from me. You are a great officer dad but you are a very poor father to one of your daughters whom you promised to give a life. You are selfish to come here even after all this and ask for help." She turned away from his father wiping her eyes furiously.

Mr Kashyap stood there in a stupor for a few second before he chose to leave knowing there is no point waiting. He took two steps when Lavanya's words halted him, "Her contract to serve in the special team is long over and your tenure as DIB is about to be over in a week. Think cleverly how you plan to stop her Mr Harshbardhan Kashyap."

Mr Kashyap's head shot to her direction only to see her smiling smugly.

"I know why you have become so desperate to come here for my help in a last ditch attempt. You are afraid to keep her in the department when you are leaving yourself. Isn't it?"

Mr Kashyap looked away not wanting to accept she was right. Yes, he was afraid that if Khushi succeeds in concluding the mission that they had started two years back and brings out the truth it will cost a great deal to many people. He doesn't care that the team he had worked hard to build since he was a chief may break to never form again but yes he was selfish to want her to stay away from this case this family to save what is precious to him.

He looked back to his daughter's face one last time before walking out with the aura of power and confidence which was part of him.

As soon he left Lavanya dropped in the nearest chair and hid her face in her hands to compose her raging emotions.

**

Arnav stared at the amber liquid in his hand. The ice crinkled as his hand shook a little. The frosted glass did not feel cold enough as his fingers tightened around the crystal glass tumbler.

The room was scarcely illuminated by the dull light of the table lamp beside Arnav keeping his body and face partly in shadows. Only his eyes were ignited with an unnamed emotion.

His mind was a whirlwind. The little he heard of Lavanya and her father's conversation played on a loop in his head.

"You are sorry! You are?"

"For what? To take a 15 years old girl, who hadn't thought twice before saving your daughter from getting ruined putting her life in danger , who had not known a life since she was 5, who had put her trust on you to give her better life when she had no other better choice."

"Or are you sorry because you could never be a father to that lost orphan girl even if you promised to be so"

"Or are sorry behalf of my mother who always treated her politely because she saved me but never mustered up enough affection to actually pull her out of her darkness."

"Lavanya there is no point talking about the past. Let's talk about the present situation and find a solution.".

He had heard of Mr. Kashyap's arrival from HP as he had come back and thought of greeting the man before he went to freshen up, thinking he may leave by the time he was done. He didn't have any intention to eavesdrop their conversation but Lavanya's voice had gone a notch higher when he was near the entrance of the terrace and the words had hit him with the impact of a bullet piercing his heart. His good manners which told him to leave the place but he was stuck in a stupor as Lavanya continued to accuse her father. His legs felt too heavy to move as he heard a gloomy part of his beloved's life which she never opened up in their time together. So much she had hidden. So much she had bore. And so much was left for him to know about her.

He would have stood there like a statue without his knowledge and will, if not for the sound of a trolly rolling behind him.

He had snapped out of his reverie and stopped HP in time to walk in a very private conversation. He had dispersed him with a wave f his hand and left himself too not willing to hear more.

If only he had stayed and forgetting his good manners for a change had heard more of their conversation!

Suddenly the memory of that night when unable to resist the pull he had gone to her home finding her address from her resume after she had left from RM tired and insulted. He had so wanted to see her, make sure she was fine and not upset by his Di's behaviour though that would have been too much to ask for.

His raised hand dropped as he noticed that the door was not locked. He pushed it gently and the faint music that was coming from behind the door like a low humming fell on his ear stronger. He looked around him and the untidy room loaded with bare minimum modern furniture and ammunition with a little thought to the interior was a total contradiction with the music that floated in air from somewhere from inside the small apartment.

The scarcely lit space and the music that was melancholically soothing created a trance like a state for him, calling him towards its origin. He walked along knowing he was not misdirected.

He saw her rocking gently in a sparse rocking chair that was placed beside the music system from where Anna Murrey crooned.

Her eyes were closed. She looked like sleeping. He shook his head thinking of her carelessness, sleeping leaving the main door open.

This room too had nothing much other than a bed in the middle and a study table in a corner. A lean cupboard stood on the other corner, which looked too small to adjust a woman's belongings. The bedside table held a night lamp and a water bottle that's all. There was only a photograph of her and Lavanya's hung on one of the walls.

There was nothing else to say a woman lived here not even a dressing table. Other than the photo she did nothing to give the room any personal touch.

He then turned his attention back to the woman of hi interest and watched on as he traced every feature of hers taking the sweet opportunity. The little band-aid on her temple and dressing on her left hand reminded him of what he was here and he contemplated if he should wake her up when she looked so peacefully sleeping. He was about to turn when he heard her voice and halted in his track.

"It is rude to stare and not healthy when you stare a sleeping woman."

For a moment, Arnav was stunned but soon he composed. He swiftly remarked, "you weren't sleeping actually. Were you?"

This time, Khushi opened her eyes and slowly sat up, "No I wasn't but you thought so. Weren't you?"

Arnav smiled. This woman bit back like hell! He thought amusedly.

"Hmm. So Anna Murrey eh!" He remarked good-naturedly.

She smiled this time. "Hmm, my father's favourite as far I remember. I have grown five years of my life listening to her and few of her times including Beatles Elvis Presley in his tape recorder and the old Hindi songs in my mother's lullaby.

Arnav looked fondly at her reminiscing some personal memory before him. "You are missing them." He asked casually.

Khushi looked lost for words and smiled awkwardly.

"You're upset" Arnav pointed out.

Caught she licked her dry lips. Then seeing him standing Khushi offered him the chair near the study table. He dragged it before her and sat turning the backside front before her like college days. Somehow the atmosphere and she made him comfortable enough to repeat an old habit.

Khushi saw him sit like that and couldn't help but think when was the last time someone sat before her like this to have a chat other than Lav.

She shook her head to get rid of the wistful thought and welcomed this change of flavour in her life with a genuine smile.

Arnav smiled back. He suddenly asked in hope to lighten her mood which surely was sour after his Di's cutting words, "did his taste change after five years?"

Khushi couldn't catch his meaning so she looked on confused.

Arnav clarified, "I mean you said you have grown particularly five years of your life listening to this. So did your father's taste changed after all this time." He asked light-heartedly.

In answer, Khushi said offhandedly, "no he died."

Arnav sat speechless for some time before he could form any words.

"I am sorry he said regretfully" for ruining the moment for them again.

Khushi nodded accepting his genuine sorry and then changed the topic before he could probe more into the matter not because she would feel the loss all over again talking about her parents as it had already become a part of her life rather she feared he would feel more regret and uncomfortable if she told him how they died. He might pity her which she cannot accept for the life of her.

"So why are you here so late? I guess not for anything work related."

"No," Arnav agreed and then told her slowly his reason for coming, "I came here to say sorry behalf of my Di. It was me who started the argument but she only heard you and berated you on the basis of it."

"It's okay you don't need to. In a way she was right. I forgot who you are in the heat of the moment I shouldn't have." Khushi said deliberately to remind Arnav as well that how distant in their status they were. "And saying sorry on other's behalf doesn't suit you" she tried to make light of the conversation.

"Well, I also can say these songs don't suit you." Arnav returned.

"Hmm, maybe." She agreed. "I didn't know the names of the singers when I heard these songs I just happen to remember their voice. I when I hear them in a music shop I bought them. You know nostalgia and all. But later as I heard I found them good, soothing." She explained.

"They are." Arnav agreed wholeheartedly.

"You know something is very different about you tonight," Arnav told her thoughtfully.

Khushi's eyebrows rose as she asked, "meaning?"

"Meaning you are more in tune, homely and talkative err off course in a good way." He shrugged.

"You mean to say I am aloof and cold normally." Khushi put it straight in fewer words what he didn't say.

Arnav shrugged not wanting to agree.

Khushi left her seat and went to stop the music and then turned. There was an amused smile on her face as she said, "That's so presumptuous."

She shook her head as she elaborated to a curious Arnav "Well, I don't take part in all the discussion that doesn't mean I am not interested. I don't comment that doesn't mean I am not listening and I don't speak much that doesn't mean I am cold to people. It just takes me time to warm up to people, that's all." People, only I am interested in, she added mentally.

Arnav nodded understanding her point and also getting an idea of the nature of the woman of his interest.

"So... you don't hold anything... against me... for my behaviour earlier," Arnav asked hesitantly.

He knew she understood what he was talking about only he wasn't sure of her response.

Khushi smiled as she said, "well how could I blame you when I know I drive you up the wall almost all the time" Khushi quipped.

Arnav stared open mouthed for a moment before he burst out laughing. Khushi too chuckled seeing his mirth. She moved to sit on the chair again when the muscle of her stomach cramped up reminding her all was not well with her. An unintentional hiss left her alarming Arnav.

"What happened, he asked leaving his seat. Are you in pain? Do you need something? Shall I call the doctor?" Came his frantic queries.

In response Khushi only shook her head before she repeated , "see how I drive you crazy with just a sound." And seeing him scowling she rushed to put him at ease, "I am fine." And then lied swiftly "I just stuck my toe in the chair that's all."

Arnav took a breath of relief. Looking at the time he decided to leave but not before asking her to take rest and take a day off next day if she doesn't feel well.

That day when he had turned one last time before leaving he had seen her smiling at him warmly and today when he sat here he wondered how could she be so calm and composed when there was nothing right in her life even then.

He had talked about her parents that day but never said she was an orphan. She had never said in their small courtship that she was adopted by Mr Kashyap or what happened to them before she was adopted.

So many things were left unknown about her and here she was gone even before he had the chance to know everything about her.

He closed his eyes and the teardrops eventually found release.

lav mom and dad were simply unthankful and coldhearted towards the saviour of their daughters life and dignity.
how can they be so mean?
good that lav gave peace of mind to harshbardhan.
