Chapter 5

Garima tried to call Khushi but always got a message saying "The number you are trying is currently switched off. Please try again later". Garima was worried. Dadi too couldn't understand what would have happened. Garima called Shashi and told him to come home immediately.

Here, Khushi was angry as well as surprised. "You!! What are you doing here? And see what you did!" She said as she picked up her shattered phone. "Do you have any idea how worried Amma might be right now?!!"

Anjali, who was angry with Khushi, kept looking at her with folded hands. "Job mil gayi, aur mujhe bataya tak nahi?!!" You got the job and you didn't even tell me?

"Anjali, I was gonna tell you ofcourse after I spoke to Amma..." replied Khushi. "By the way, what are you doing here?" she asked.

Anjali seemed super excited. "Guess what??" she said, "I got the job too!!!"

Both were so happy... It was their dream to work together... and today it had come true!!

They both left for home on Anjali's scooty. On the way Khushi called Garima and told her that everything was fine and she was reaching home in a few minutes. Anjali dropped Khushi at the gate.

"Come in for some time, Anjali" invited Khushi.

But Anjali too wanted to go home and tell everyone about the job. "No yaar, not today!" she replied. Khushi understood her.

Both hugged each other congratulating and Shruti left.

Shashi, Garima and Dadi came to the door, their desperation to meet Khushi was clearly visible on their faces. Garima hurried towards Khushi. Looking at her holding Khushi's face in her hands she said "Khushi!! Are you alright? Why was your phone switched off? Is everything alright?"

Khushi saw all eyes were on her, waiting for her reply. She thought of making little fun of them. Walking towards the wall slowly, looking sad, she said "Amma how will I tell you what happened..."

She paused. Everyone was tensed now.

Pretending to shed tears, she continued, "Amma I don't understand how to tell you what my luck has brought me..." Everyone was worried, waiting for Khushi to speak on. Khushi then turned to face them. "How will I tell you that I am so fortunate!!!" she exclaimed smiling ear to ear.

Everyone was confused. "Kahin yeh paagal toh nahi ho gayi?" Has she gone mad?

"Khushi beta, tum theek toh ho na?" asked Shashi. Are you alright?

Laughing, Khushi said "I scared you, didn't I?!! But now I want to give you all a good news!!"

"Good news?" Everyone looked at each other.

"Oh ho! Why are you all standing outside... Let's go in!" said Khushi.

She forced everyone inside their home and went into the kitchen, leaving them in the hall wondering what she was up to. She came out with the jar of sugar and gave a spoonful of sugar to each of them saying... "Leejiye! Pehele moonh meetha kijeeye!!"

"Khushi, atleast tell us now what has happened!" said Garima.

Khushi smiled more and announced in a dramatic way, "Amma, Babuji aur Dadi... Your little girl has got the job!! Tadaa!!!"

Everyone was pleasantly surprised and very happy for her. She narrated everything to all like she told to Anjali on the way home. Whatever happened, but in the end the Khushi was lucky to have got the job.

"That Laad Governor tried his best not to give this job to me!! But you know what, Aman Sir is very nice! It's because of him that I could get this job. And the most important thing is that, Anjali too got the job!!" Everyone was happy for both the girls. Khushi continued, "And there's one more person joining with me... Shyam. He is a nice guy. He is from Mumbai and is currently staying with his uncle and Aunt here in Pune. And you know what happened..."

And Khushi went on and on, without a break. Though everyone was getting bored, they listened patiently.

Arnav returned home annoyed and frustrated. His elder brother, Akash, observed him as he went directly to his room. Akash sensed something was wrong. He glanced at his wife, Payal.

"What do you think?" he asked.

"Wait, I will check!" replied Payal.

Saying so, Payal went towards Arnav's room. The door was closed. She knocked...

"Arnav?!"

There was no reply. She knocked again...

"Arnav, I am coming in!"

She opened the door and went in to see Arnav sitting on the bed leaning backward with closed eyes. She was the only female in the world Arnav believed in. They both shared a very special bond of friendship. Arnav always suggested her on calling him "Arnav" and not "Arnav ji" or "devar ji" or anything like it. After Aman, it was Payal that Arnav spoke up to.

"Hmmm... I seee..." said Payal observing Arnav. "Another new girl has come today, I guess..."

"Hmm..." replied Arnav keeping his eyes closed. Suddenly opening his eyes, he said, "But bhabhi, how do you always understand me without me telling?"

Patting on Arnav's head, Payal said, "Mere pyaare devar ko main nahi samajhungi toh kaun samjhega??" Who will understand you if not me? Arnav smiled. "By the way, what's her name?" Payal asked teasing him.

"Khushi Kumari Gupta!!" said Arnav, anger clearly visible in his eyes.

"Arey! Isn't she the same girl you had dashed into on the road?" said Payal recalling.

"Unfortunately yes!! And bhabhi, I never dashed into her!" he replied correcting Payal.

"Woh sab chhodo... Is she beautiful?" asked Payal in a teasing tone.

"Bhabhi!! Tum bhi na!! All women are the same!! Just like Sheetal!!"

Akash entered...

Winking he said, "OMG! Arnav is talking about a GIRL?!! Payal, zara dekho toh aaj sooraj kahan se nikla hai?"

Payal and Akash always enjoyed teasing Arnav; both were laughing. Just then they heard a cute voice...

"Shun rises in the East...!! Teacher ne aaj hi bataya! Aap ko itna bhi nahi pata Papa?!!"

Everyone was shocked. It was Akash and Payal's 3 year old daughter, Riya!! Payal and Akash looked at each other and burst into laughter, but not Arnav. He was not at all in a mood to laugh. Riya always feared Arnav. He too looked at Riya as just another girl. She frowned looking at Arnav. Just then the door bell rang.

"It must be Ma and Papa. I will see..." said Akash and left to open the door. Riya ran behind him.

"Bhabhi, you too go down. Anyways, Mrs. Raizada doesn't like my sharing everything with you!" said Arnav.

Payal scolded him saying, "Arnav!! Show some respect while talking to your mother!"

"She is not my mother!" yelled Arnav in anger.

Akash opened the door to see Aman standing in front.

"Arey Aman! Come in...!" he said.

"Namaste Bhaiyya! How are you?"

"I am good!" replied Akash.

Riya came running and hugged Aman's legs.

Lifting her up, Aman said, "Arey Riya beta, how are you?"

Riya was very excited on seeing Aman. "Come, let's play!!" she said.

Keeping her down and making a sad face, Aman replied, "Sorry Riya! Today I have come to meet your Chachu. He is angry with me..."

"He is always angry with me too..." said Riya getting upset.

Trying to change her mood, Akash said "Come Riya, let's play!" Riya happily agreed. Turning to Aman, Akash said, "Arnav is in his room upstairs..."

Aman nodded and went to Arnav's room.

Seeing Aman, Payal excused herself saying, "You both have a chat... I will leave..." She thought it would be better to leave the best friends to talk.

She left.

"Still angry with me?" asked Aman.

"Not really" said Arnav, "But didn't you find any other girl, dammit!"

"Oh c'mon Arnav, she desrves it!"

"She deserves to be kicked out!!" said Arnav in anger.

"Don't say that Arnav..." said Aman. He began praising Khushi on purpose, "She is smart, she is intelligent, she is beautiful, she is..."

Arnav was irritated. "Oh really? Then why don't you just marry her!!"

"That's not a bad idea!!" said Aman naughtily.

Arnav wasn't expecting such a reply. "What?!! Are you serious?"

Aman pretended to be very serious. "There's only one problem... only if Pooja allows me to!!"

Saying so Aman winked. Pooja was Aman's childhood friend and they both were to get married in a year.

Shaking his head, Arnav said "Baaton mein toh tumhein koi nahi hara sakta!!" No one can hold your hand in arguments!

Next day, Khushi woke up late. Shashi had bought sweets on Khushi getting the job.

"Amma! I will be back giving sweets to Ratna Aunty!!" said Khushi and left with a box of sweets.

Ratna Aunty was their neighbour who stayed with her husband Sudheer. Khushi went to meet them with the sweets. She rang the doorbell. And she was surprised to see the person who opened the door.

"Shyam tum?!"

Shyam too was surprised to see Khushi. Ratna and Sudheer were his Aunt and Uncle he had told about the day before. Khushi and Shyam were glad to meet again here which was unexpected.

Ratna Aunty was surprised. "Arey! Do you both know each other?"

They told her everything. She was very happy for them.

Khushi and Anjali began their preparations to join their dream job. They had 5 days left. They went shopping. Khushi got her scooty serviced. She also introduced Anjali to Shyam. And both girls also took Shyam to various places of Pune which he had not seen earlier. They enjoyed going to Sinhagad, Shaniwar Wada, Parvati hill... and enjoyed hanging out in Wadeshwar and Durga!!

Finally the day arrived. All three reached office on their respective bikes. Shyam had suggested Khushi of going on one (his) bike, but Khushi wasn't comfortable with that. They reached the office and registered their arrival. Being the first day, they had reached a good 30 minutes early. Anjali went to her department. The three decided to have lunch together.

Khushi wished Mansi "Good Morning" and began to leave the reception, when Mansi called her.

"Khushi, wait! Actually your interview was not taken by Arnav Sir on the day when others' was. So Arnav Sir's sign is not there on these papers"

Mansi handed a couple of papers to Khushi.

"You need to take his signatures on them, and you also need on to sign on the register with Arnav Sir" told Mansi.

Facing Arnav was a big problem for Khushi after their previous meetings. She was tensed.

"You please wait here" said Mansi. "Once Arnav Sir comes, you can go to his cabin"

Khushi nodded with a forced smile and waited for Arnav to arrive. Shyam didn't understand why Khushi was so nervous.

"Why are you so nervous? You are to take just a small signature, that's it!!"

"Ab kya bataun tumhein?" thought Khushi. She said to Shyam, "Today is our first day here... Hope everything goes well!"

"I know everything will go well!!" said Shyam confidently.

He too waited with her.

Arnav arrived. He parked his car and entered through the lobby. Khushi and Shyam stood up. Arnav threw an angry glance at Khushi as he passed by. Mansi wished him "Good Morning, Sir!" with a smile that faded away as he went past to his cabin without responding.

After a few minutes, Mansi called Arnav up on the intercom to ask whether he was free for a moment. She then told Khushi to go in. Khushi just prayed to Devi Maiyya and knocked the door of Arnav's cabin.

"May I come in Sir?" she asked hesitantly.
