CHAPTER 7:
With the palanquin of the princess escorted towards the main gate of the fort passing through the pile of ashes and broken huts, Jodha peeped out from the curtain. There were only tears outside! Tears of the children who have lost their parents... tears of the mother who has lost her children... tears of hundreds of poor people who lost their homes again... screams of the severely wounded men... the patches of blood here and there of the road...It's intolerable! Jodha closed her eyes instantly! How! How the authority of Amer can be so much silly-sally about the rescue works? Can't they hear these cry and scream? Don't the tears of the helpless mass burn their heart?
If...if only Jodha could do anything... anything for them!
She leaned against the back of the palanquin helplessly. The palanquin stepped outside the fort. The princess is going to the temple outside to worship Maa Kali for the betterment of their state. It was next to impossible for the king to give the permission of visiting the temple, as it had not been a long time after the horrible attack of imposter armies in the temple place, but since she was hurt for the harsh behavior of her father, and was not talking from morning, King Bharmal found it the best solution to send her outside of the palace so that she comes back with a delightful mood and becomes happy with her father. Jodha too needed solitary... if not the temple, then somewhere else! The air of the palace was however strangulating her... Her heart was crying to run away from this fake happiness and pile of wealth that is surrounded by her all the time, insulting her entity as a human is all the possible ways. So she prepared the ingredients of puja and other materials of charity, and left the palace along with Moti Bai and body-guards. The plates of charities are going with her... God knows whom she will give them! Everyone needs help to live now... gifting a blanket, three gold coins and two tasty laddu as Prasad is nothing but a nude execution of their wealth and riches in front of some dying persons... nothing but the humiliation of humanity!
The barriers put the palanquin down at the yard of the broken temple; the body-guards surrounded the temple-place immediately before the princess came out of the curtain. There was a plate with flowers and light in her hand, and the maids around her were carrying the other plates of charity. She gave a sign to the chief companion Moti who passed it to the leader of the troop. The soldiers opened up their swords and covered the outer-side of the temple, but did not accompany the princess. It is not expected to enter inside the God's place with open arms in hand in their belief- be it even a looted, humiliated, broken temple!
While stepping up the stairs, Jodha's eyes unmindfully fell on the abandon huts beside the temple! All are silent like death... She herself is the witness of the fact that how much lively the place had been before; now all is finished; all is silent! Suddenly a thorn tinged inside her heart... is it a silence of destruction that Amer is going to witness slowly? Who will save Amer and her citizens?
She slowly got into the temple with heavy heart, with the maids following her; her gaze was fixed at the face of the idol, and so she stumbled on something in the dark, and managed to keep intact her balance at the last moment...
"Hey Kaanha!"
The lamp of Jodha's plate was spreading light; she looked downwards automatically. The exclamatory sigh spontaneously came out from her mouth as... in the mixture of darkness inside the temple and the light of both the lamp and slight daylight of outside she could see it perfectly that, on whom she has tripped on is none but a man!
An alive man!
The maids behind her had become nervous, so was Moti and continuously nudging her to call Vijay Singh to look upon the matter, but Jodha completely ignored her presence and bent on knee to check the pulse of the man. He is alive very much, may be have fainted because of fever as his body is hot and he is shivering a little in cold. He must have wet in yesterday's rain, his semi-wet dress, wet hairs and the wet floor around him proves it. Maybe this ailing man had taken shelter inside the temple in the rain, and then has become unconscious... but...
Jodha's core of the heart shook when the light of her hand fell on the face of the young man fallen beside... she knows him! He is HE!
How could Jodha forget the face of that young warrior who captured her heart at the very first sight? How could Jodha forget the face of the generous man who did not hesitate once to risk his life by jumping on fire for sake of some unknown peoples' life? How could she!
"Kunwari Sa!" Moti whispered at Jodha's ears. "Is he alive?"
Jodha keenly observed his whole body... his foot is severely wounded. There are also the marks of burns in his hands and upper-chest. A slight trace of blood has been clotted on his forehead. Maybe he had been wounded while jumping into the burning hut to save the people... he needs treatment very early. Jodha took a blanket from a golden tray held by one of her maids and covered his shivering body swiftly. "Leela, run fast and call Vaiydh Sadanand here."
Vaiydh Sadanand is a crazy naturopath of Amer. Though he is not the royal physician, but Jodha has a good rapport with him...
Leela rushed from the temple to abide by the orders. "You all go back to the fort to distribute these blankets and foods among the homeless peoples... And remember, none of you know about this incident..." The voice of the princess had such a gravity which compelled the other maids to go out of the temple stopping their gossips at once. They all are bound to delete this incident of temple forever from their mind; otherwise it will not be forgiven by the princess. Though she is never cruel or unkind to any of the maid, yet her one cold stare is enough for them to give a heart-attack!
"Moti, call Vijay Singh inside. Other soldiers should follow the maids to the fort."
"And this man?" Moti was confused.
"Moti..." She repeated in a cold authority which compelled Moti to listen to her.
Vijay Singh frowned after hearing Moti. The fellow soldiers were waiting for their leaders order, but Vijay was not at all in favour to send all the troops before the princess. He started caressing on mustache while thinking.
"Can't you listen?" Moti Bai blurted out in irritated voice. "Kunwari Sa has sought your presence..."
Vijay Singh looked at her face with angry eyes and bent his lips in ignorance, which irritated Moti more.
"You dare to ignore the chief attendant of Princess Jodha Bai?" Moti Bai grunted.
"Do you expect me to be scared from you, Madam Moti Bai?" Vijay Singh made faces. "Now I am on duty, don't disturb!"
"Hey listen, Sainik Vijay Singh!"Moti frowned. "By ignoring me you are ignoring the princess's orders!"
"Your work is only to transfer the order. Why are you standing here still now?" Vijay turned his face into other direction. They are going through the phase after a big quarrel, and Vijay had not got the scope to gift her the present that he had bought for her to oil her till now, so he has no choice rather than teasing her this time! Usually it becomes easier to butter the beloved with gift after teasing her much and making her angrier after a fight. But his colleague soldiers had become impatient and bored; so one of them shouted "What should we do Vijay Singh? Should we leave?"
"Wait!" Vijay told and looked at Moti Bai. "Let's go..."
"Why didn't you let the troop to go off?" Moti protested. "Haven't you heard..."
"I am not so dull to believe your word; I know you are half deaf. Come with me." Vijay made her even angrier, and went inside the temple. And as expected, got the greatest shock of his life to see a man lying on the floor and the princess lighting candle in front of the Goddess very calmly...
"Kunwari Sa..."
Jodha looked back without saying anything and her eyes commanded Vijay to stay quiet for a moment. She bent down in front of the Goddess with all the respect and surrender of her heart and prayed. After that she moved towards Vijay...
"Have the other soldiers gone?" She asked him.
"No. I mean, Kunwari Sa..." Vijay got a tongue-tie while Moti started smiling putting hand on lip.
"I had ordered to."
"I know Kunwari Sa. But... Kunwar Sa has ordered me especially to take care of your security and so..."
"I don't need a whole troop of army for my protection. When I am ordering something, it has some reason." Jodha concluded with her authoritative tone. "Command the troop to follow my maids at once."
"As you wish; Kunwari Sa..." Vijay was going outside with a lot of question on mind, Jodha called back.
"I can understand you have lot of questions in your mind. I will answer them so that you don't carry out my order with dissatisfaction." She smiled mildly. "And I know your first question is..." looking at the man she uttered. "Who is this man."
"Kunwari Sa..."
"I don't know." She answered before Vijay could finish. "We have seen him lying down on the floor like this... he is wounded and needs treatment. I have sent one of my attendants to call Vaiydh ji."
"Does he have any ID proof? Who is he, from where he is..." Vijay asked while kneeling down beside him.
"Probably he does not. It's your duty to search him." Jodha said. "But before that send the troop off and take him to any of the huts outside...The temple place is not okay for treatment...and keep it in mind that none should know about this."
Vijay was quite shocked to hear this strange order suddenly. "But..." he tried to open up but could not in front of her rock-hard personality.
"You may share your opinion Vijay." The princess assured him with a calm smile. "I can see there's lot of hesitations in your mind."
"I beg your pardon Kunwari Sa, but..." Vijay told. "My personal opinion is to inform this to the king immediately."
"And to arrest him?"
"He might be a spy..."
"He might not. He might be a poor vagabond searching for work... he might be a tired passerby resting inside the temple outside the fort territory..." She smiled. "And we can't arrest an innocent on the basis of doubt. It will tell upon our image. And if you say that he can be arrested for trespassing if he is found without his ID, the also I would say it is not what rule says. The authority demands official documents to enter inside the fort, not in an abandoned temple. Though I can bet from his wounds that he was present when the fire broke out, but..." She looked at his sleeping face, "We cannot arrest him from outside for that reason without any strong proof. It's against the ethics."
"But we can't go against the king..." Vijay Singh uttered with hesitation.
"We are not going against anyone. No where it is written that we have to inform the royal court if we find someone unconscious out of the territory." Jodha said. "I know what will going to happen maximum if we inform it to the king. He will be least bothered; Kunwar Sujamal will order to arrest him and interrogate him; he will be tortured in custody without any reasons for two-three days without any type of treatment, and will be released after that with the stamp of not-guilty. Nothing will be sorted out! "
"But Kunwari Sa it can be dangerous..." Vijay's voice was still confused. "He can be an invader... a Mughal..."
"We are Rajputs... How can we be frightened of Mughals?" She smiled. "He is only one... He can do nothing. And I ordered you to search him well. If you find anything wrong you are free to report it but not before he gets the minimum treatment and without any solid proof!"
"Yes Kunwari Sa... But..."
"I can assure you that it will not tell upon your career."
"I am least concerned about that Kunwari Sa..." Vijay's voice was offended. "I am hesitating as I fell we are taking unnecessary risk without any reason."
"Vijay Singh..." Jodha's voice became huskier. "Do you believe on the thoughts and decisions of the princess?"
"Your wish is order for me Kunwari Sa..." Vijay bowed down in respect in front of her and went off to send the troop back. Vaiydh Sadanand came after a few moments. Vijay was enough to carry his unconscious body out of the temple. Sadanand started his treatment while Vijay started searching him like a hound!
Jodha left the place along with Moti and Leela and went back to the palanquins. The palanquin-bearers were resting at near distance, didn't even notice what happened at the surrounding of the temple place... A strange feeling of adventure and excitement had filled Jodha up. She knows what she is doing is weird and risky; though she is not breaking any rule as per the penal codes but what she is doing is not a very ethical work for a princess in such a situation. But she can't help it! How she can leave the young warrior alone in the temple; or can let him to be arrested? He might be revealed to be anything- an imposter, a spy or maybe a mere trespasser... but to Jodha he is the savior! He has saved more than one lives without thinking about own, has been terrible injured while doing this. Jodha suddenly remembered how he gave his introduction to her at their first meeting- "I am a human!" He has proved how much great human he is in front of Jodha's eyes... now as a human it is Jodha's duty to help him... at any cost!
An uncanny fascination suddenly delighted Jodha's mind... The enigmatic valiant warrior coming from the moonlight is now the guest of Jodha... how she can leave the chance to know him from closer?
