The blockbuster, based on Rudyard Kipling's book of the same name, continues to charm Indian audiences, especially children.

Multiple movie releases in India in the last five weeks have not been able to dent the box office collections of Hollywood movie The Jungle Book. The blockbuster, based on Rudyard Kipling's book of the same name, continues to charm Indian audiences, especially children. The Jungle Book box office report by film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh states that the film's gross collections stand at Rs 243.27 crore in India in Week 5! "#TheJungleBook [Week 5] Fri 75 lacs, Sat 1.34 cr, Sun 1.52 cr, Mon 60 lacs. Total: 175.16 cr nett. India biz. ATBB. Gross: 243.27 cr," said Adarsh.

The Jungle Book has close competition only from Captain America: Civil War this week, and in the coming weeks from other Hollywood films like The Angry Birds Movie, X-Men: Apocalypse and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:Out of the Shadows. (ALSO READ: Captain America: Civil War Box office Report) Among the other movies released last week, 1920, One Night Stand and Traffic are no competition to The Jungle Book. In south India, the competition could be Suriya's Tamil movie 24.

However, Marathi film Sairat released two weeks ago continues to run houseful along with The Jungle Book in its Week 5. Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor's Baaghi in Hindi is also running solid still. (ALSO READ: Sairat movie review)

The Jungle Book stars Neel Sethi as Mowgli, with voiceovers in the Hindi version by Nana Patekar, Priyanka Chopra, Om Puri, Irrfan Khan and Shefali Shah for the main characters. Directed by Jon Favreau, the movie tells the story of Mowgli, a boy who gets lost in the jungles of Seoni in Central India and is brought up by a pack of wolves.

The Jungle Book television animated series is still fresh in the minds of Indians, and for their children, the movie is a treat. A sequel to the film has already been announced based on Kipling's story.

Disney India hits box-office bull's eye with two Hollywood grossers

A still from the movie The Jungle Book

The Jungle Book and Captain America: Civil War do brisk business in both English and regional languages

Mumbai, May 10:

Disney India seems to be having a dream run at the box-office with three of its films grossing 383 crore in less than a month.

The Jungle Book, which was released on April 8, was the top grosser with a gross collection of 243.27 crore.

Jon Favreau-directed The Jungle Book has also broken the record of Fast and Furious 7 (which grossed 105 crore) and Akshay Kumar-starrer Bollywood film Airlift (128 crore) released earlier this year, in terms of box office collections.

Tiger Shroff-starrer Baaghi, a UTV property, too has opened to 95.85 crore (inclusive of international collection). Others like superhero epic film Captain America: Civil War, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, clocked 44.06 crore in a less than a week of its release. The movie has been released in over 1,600 screens in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

Amrita Pandey, Vice-President - Studios, Disney India, said: "The month of April has been super exciting at Disney India. What's also very special is that all three of our hits from this month are from our three different brands " Disney's The Jungle Book, Baaghi with the UTV Motion Pictures brand and Marvel's Captain America: Civil War. Not only did The Jungle Book do spectacular business in the English language, but the Hindi business and the pay-offs from all the localisation we did was huge."

Keeping buzz alive

Disney India said it had employed a mix of local and global initiatives to keep the buzz alive around the films. Given the success of the voice casting coup for The Jungle Book, Disney India roped in youth icon Varun Dhawan, who has a huge fan following across generations, as the voice of Captain America AKA Steve Rogers for the Hindi version of the much-awaited superhero film. Besides the company had also collaborated with renowned dialogue writer Mayur Puri for the Hindi script of Marvel film's dubbed version.

Kamal Gainchandani, CEO, PVR Pictures, said, "The film has resonated well with the audience and the film's net collection of 175-180 crore is indeed a stupendous success." Gainchandani attributed the high box office collection also to the rising number of multiplexes and digitisation of single screens.

Even for The Jungle Book, the Indian audience had been hooked to the regional version of the Hollywood film. The regional versions, including Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, had previously accounted for about 54 per cent of the gross collection while the balance 46 per cent is accounted for by the English version.

PV Sunil, Director and CEO of Carnival Cinemas, said: The connect of the audience of all the generations with the characters of Jungle Book and its song - Chaddi Pahen Ke Phool Khila Hai, proved a success... It's a good sign for other Hollywood films in India as there is an excellent array of films lined up in the coming months.

The movie is really great even without the song. The Hindi voice actors have done a really good job.

I'm glad it's doing well not just in India but worldwide. It was a good movie...just not as good as the hype.

In my theater, they played it before the movie started. That song just sets the mood.

You know I'm not a big fan of animated movies but Zootopia was suprisingly fun!! 😆😆

And it really pains me to say this because I'm a Batman/DC fan but Captain America: Civil War was the best damn superhero movie I've ever seen. Wish DC knew how to make good movies like Marvel does. But alas! Batman vs. Superman was such a borefest...except the last 30 minutes or so 😆😆
